In this video 0:00 Warning: Perilous Times in the Last Days11:00 The Three Misguided Loves20:00 Relational Breakdown and Pride's Masquerade32:00 Embrace Godliness's Power and Turn Away38:00 Conclusion: Overcoming Through Christ
Warning: Perilous Times in the Last Days 0:00 Father, I would ask this morning that you would steal our hearts before you. Lord, your word is powerful, sharper than any 2 edged sword.0:13 It's able to pierce us. It's able to convict us. It's able to transform us. And as we read these things, lord, help us to consider the days that we live0:25 in because we know that the darker the world gets and the closer your return gets, how important it is that your church0:37 shine brightly. And god, I would pray for an equipping upon your people, a filling of the Holy Spirit, an empowering to be0:48 witnesses for you, and to always be ready to give an answer for the hope that we have inside of our relationship with you. May we never look to your word just as1:01 stories, just as information. May we truly believe that it is god speaking to our hearts, to our lives,1:12 to the sin in our lives that we might deal with it, that we might bring it to you, god, and that you would forgive us. And so this morning, we come asking1:24 god, forgive us where we fail. Forgive us where we doubt. Forgive us when we're unpleasing in your sight because of sin. But thank you, god, for1:36 sending Jesus that gives us the victory, that gives us a surety that we can be cleansed and washed clean and washed as white as snow, not on our
1:48 doing, but in yours. We love you, god. We thank you. We ask your blessings upon this time now. In Jesus' name, amen.
2:00 So this morning's message I've entitled, broken on the inside. And we've all probably experienced it or we've at least witnessed it. We've seen something
2:12 like this on the curb in our neighborhoods, maybe in our own driveway. It's a wore out dishwasher or clothes washer. The knobs are all there. The cord's intact. The buttons
2:24 all work, but something on the inside is broken and of no longer any value. And so we pull it to the curb. And I can remember in my
2:35 life as a pastor early on in my ministry, I had a friend who loved the lord, met him at church. He was a strong
2:47 believer, always ready to witness, always ready to share his faith, always ready to help another believer or someone else come to the lord or grow closer to the lord, would
2:59 be that 1 that would know the word of god, would share the word of god, and would be an a a powerful person in the body of Christ. Came to church regularly.
3:11 Always willing to pray, always willing to be there for others. He had the right answers. He served faithfully. But in 1 private moment and discussion,
3:24 we found out that he no longer wanted to be married to his wife. And I can distinctly remember sitting down with him at lunch and asking him, what is going on? He goes, I'm just I'm
3:35 done. I'm like, come on. I mean, you've been living with the lord. You've been living for the lord. You've been serving god. You've you have a loving relationship. I what has happened? I'm just done.
3:48 And I remember looking him dead in the eyes, and I said, is there anyone else in your life? Is there some other distraction? He looked at me and he said, absolutely not. Only to find out 2
3:59 weeks ago that that was the very thing. He'd no longer kept eyes for his wife. No. His eyes wandered. He wanted something else. There was something inside of him
4:11 that died. There was something inside of him that starved. There was that I think it's in Peter that that that Peter says, fan the flame that's in you. You know, make sure you're burning hot
4:23 for the Lord. And what was amazing to me in that circumstance certainly broke my heart, certainly was bro heartbroken that he would lie to me face to face. But to to see that
4:35 this man who God used mightily in my life and in many others lives decided to drift, decided to long for things that he wanted in his life, that he maybe wasn't getting in his
4:47 marriage. And it was devastating to us. And it was the time that I truly understood the words in God or in God's word that God hates
4:58 divorce. Because divorce, it infiltrates everything. It infiltrates family. It infiltrates friends. It's every it's like, ugh. It was so hard and so
5:10 hard for me to understand because it's like this guy, I heard him minister to other brothers about being faithful in their marriages. How does that happen, guys? It
5:22 doesn't happen overnight. I can assure you that. You don't wake up 1 day and just say, well, I'm gonna abandon my faith. No. It's a slow drift. It's a slow cooling off. It's a slow staying
5:35 on the on the peripheral, if you will, when it comes to the things of god. And this message and these verses that we're gonna read this morning are hard to read in my opinion
5:47 because I believe Paul is talking about believers. I believe Paul is talking about those who love the Lord, who will say they're saved, but their lives don't exemplify the
5:59 walk with god. And then we had to it's a reminder to all of us to be careful. To be careful. To stay close. To stay
6:11 close to the lord. Yes. It's important to remain in fellowship. Yes. It's important to pray. Yes. It's important to read, but those are all things we do. Are you in your
6:22 heart connected to the Lord? Because that's where conviction come. When we're close to Jesus, when we're close to it reveals the darkness in our hearts.
6:36 None of us are perfect yet, but we're being perfected. But be careful of the slow drift. See, Paul tells Timothy that in the last days,
6:47 entire cultures, even churches can end up looking like this old appliance. Shiny on the outside, but dead on the inside. We
6:59 can't see it. God sees it, but we can't see it. We can pretend. We can act. We can wear the mask. But what's going on in your heart? What's going on in your mind? What are
7:11 you doing behind closed doors? What are you experiencing when you're alone? Because that's the true Christian that you are is when it's in private. Because it's easy to look nice
7:23 when you're at church. It's easy to put on the face when you're around another believer. But what is going on on your inside? Everything Paul catalogs
7:35 here is not a list of unbelievers who are rejecting God outright. I do believe this list certainly does describe the world that we live in. But I
7:47 think this list describes what can be in the heart of a believer. God forbid the entirety of the list. But from time to time, certain things on the list we can struggle with, and I
7:59 want you to understand there's a difference between struggling with these things and being these things. Amen? Because we all struggle. We all are in the flesh. We all fall
8:11 short. But praise be to God, Christ has saved us. See, it's a description of people who have kept their religious shape, but have lost their spiritual
8:23 substance. I probably we all know them. We know friends or people in our lives that at once were on
8:35 fire for God, lived for the Lord, oozed the Lord. The word just came out of him. But then over the years, little by little, the world just dragged
8:47 them away. Don't let it happen to you. Let these verses be a huge warning to all of us.
9:00 Again, I'm hoping nobody is dealing with everything on this list. But if there are things on this list that you're struggling with, god's wanting to reveal it to you. God wants to show
9:12 you those areas in your life, in your heart that he wants you to work on. We're always a work in progress, are we not? We'll continue to be molded and shaped in the
9:23 likeness of Christ until we're there with him. And I can't wait for that day. But let's be involved in each other's life just like Paul was to Timothy. Timothy, these are the days you're gonna live in.
9:35 Now, he's also he's saying it to Timothy, but he's also saying, listen, there's people around your life you gotta be watching. Right? Doesn't the Bible say you know them by their what? Fruit. You know them by the
9:46 byproduct of their walk. So it requires a relationship. Paul knew the days he was living in. And if Paul thought he was living in the last days, how much
9:58 more are we? Right? We're in the last of the last of the last days. I believe with all my heart, the lord could come home can come take us home at any moment,
10:10 and I'm excited about that. Read with me if you will. Verse 1. And maybe you wanna highlight or underline, but know this.
10:22 But know this. Paul's getting Timothy's attention. Know this, Timothy. Don't think about it. Don't consider it. Know it. But know this, that in the last days, perilous times
10:34 will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud,
10:47 blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving,
10:59 unforgiving, slanderers without self control. Brutal. Despisers of
The Three Misguided Loves
11:11 good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers
11:24 of God. Having a form of godliness, but denying its power. And from such people, turn away.
11:38 Just so you know upfront, we're not gonna laboriously go through 18 different words and describe what the original language is and get different meanings. I'll let you do that on your own.
11:51 But I read those 18 things that Paul lists slowly so that they would really penetrate our hearts. That we would look at this list and say, god forbid
12:03 any of this would be in my life. God forbid I would allow these things in my heart, in my life. As I've said, I don't think Paul's talking about a
12:15 specific person that has these all, although the world probably comes pretty darn close to the entire list. But I think he's telling Timothy, be
12:27 mindful of the days we're living in. And what I love about what Paul is saying here is that Timothy was living, get this, in the last days.
12:39 Right? He's not telling Paul or he's not telling Timothy, like, hey, Timothy. In a few years from now, this is when this is gonna happen. No. He's saying, this is going on right now, Timothy. This is happening in your
12:51 life. In the last days, there's gonna be these perilous times that men are gonna be drifting from the faith, drifting from the truth. Now listen,
13:03 we can debate, argue, talk about, discuss. Who's Paul talking to? Is he talking to believers? Is he talking to unbelievers?
13:15 Listen, there's a lot of smart people, a whole lot smarter than me, that disagree on this topic on both sides. I personally take the position that Paul's talking about believers.
13:28 Specifically, because he's talking about their wanting a a form of godliness, a a a a way of godliness. In fact, he even, he even says from
13:40 such people, what? Turn away. Are we to turn away from the world? Are we to stay away from the world? Yes. We're not to act like the world. Listen, we're not to participate in the things of the world.
13:52 But god forbid, if we're not out there in the world, fellowshipping or communicating with people, not fellowshipping, communicating with people, the the the blood of Jesus Christ and the gospel
14:04 of Jesus Christ, how are they gonna change? Because every unbeliever has 1 of these qualities in their lives at least. And I think Paul's saying, Timothy,
14:17 if it's a a Christ professing believer who's living like this, don't hang out with them. Don't hang out.
14:29 Anyway, you can email me later or you disagree with me. I'll just delete it. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I'll read it. I'll read it. I'll pray about it. But again,
14:41 going back to the 1st 2 words, knowing know this, Timothy, but know this. Timothy, this is happening in your day. Paul is saying, I'm commanding you,
14:53 Timothy. This isn't a suggestion. Don't be blindsided on what's happening. Don't be blindsided in what's going on in your church or in your life or in your ministry. The last
15:05 days are here. It's not a future problem that Paul's describing. It's a present issue. The writer of Hebrews says this, God has in
15:17 these last days spoken to us by his son whom he has appointed heirs of all things through whom also he made the world. In the
15:28 last days, God is gonna pour out his spirit. This is the time that we're living in, the days where his spirit's been poured out, where it's been given to those who believe, where we can be filled with the holy spirit
15:38 continually, where we can be baptized with the Holy Spirit because we need the Holy Spirit. Because without the spirit, wouldn't you agree, it'd be easy to live like this?
15:50 It'd be easy to live unloving, unforgiving, judgmental, being a slanderer. Without the spirit, how do we not feel conviction of
16:02 of of acting like this? And so the last days are what Timothy was living in. Peter at Pentecost said that Joel spoke of the last days in his prophecy when
16:14 he said this, he repeated it in acts and it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. Your young
16:26 men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dream. We're kidding ourselves if we think we can do any of this or walk with the lord without the holy
16:38 spirit and without a continual filling of the holy spirit. Listen to me. If you're a follower of Christ and you're feeling distant from God and you're feeling dry and you're feeling like God doesn't
16:50 hear you and you're feeling like God isn't speaking to you, listen to me. Ask God to fill you with the spirit. Ask God to reconnect your spirit with his spirit because you've been
17:02 given the Holy Spirit. If you're believing in Christ, he's been given to you to help convict you of sin, help to lead you in righteousness. Ask him to fill you afresh time and time again. We see in the
17:14 new testament that the disciples and the apostles were filled with the holy spirit until and then they did something. In your devotions, every day,
17:26 god, give me more of your spirit. Isn't it true we can't get enough of the holy spirit?
17:38 There's never gonna be a point where I'm like, lord, too much holy spirit. Please. No more. No. Lord, fill me. Fill me to what? To overflow of
17:50 the spirit so that we can be witnesses, so that we can be used by god, so that we sense these behaviors that Paul is listening and say, no. I don't want that in my life. I wanna be loving. I
18:02 wanna be forgiving. I wanna be sensitive. See, Timothy is living in the last days just like we are, which means this isn't a message about some future
18:14 crisis coming up. We can look out into the world and see these things. Can we not? I mean, children being disobedient to parents? I mean, it's it's obvious. You see it all the time.
18:29 This message is about our current context, where we are right now. I lived in Florida for 10 years,
18:41 and it was during hurricane seasons. We'd get the alerts. Hurricane coming was always a woman's name. I don't know what that means. But, anyway, just
18:53 kidding. Just kidding. But she didn't wait until the storm was just about to get into your neighborhood before you decided to go go go to Home Depot to get some plywood. Because once
19:05 they announce a hurricane coming, guess what? Plywood's gone. It's like you had to do it in advance. You had to prepare for the storm that was coming, and Paul is saying to Timothy,
19:17 Timothy, you need to prepare for what's coming. You need to prepare for how people are gonna be in their hearts. Even those who love God struggle with the
19:29 things of the flesh. But but again, and notice verse 2 says, for men will be, will be. This isn't men will struggle with. This
19:41 isn't men will deal with. It's men will be these things. And it's being these things that Paul is saying, watch out for. Again, we can
19:52 struggle with these things. We can deal with these things in our lives as we look at the list. But as Christians, we go, Lord, don't let this rule my life. Don't let this
Relational Breakdown and Pride's Masquerade
20:04 be in my heart. Deal with it with me. He says, but know this that in the last days, perilous times
20:16 will come. What a word. Did you guys have a perilous week last week? Have you ever used the word perilous? You, I know, use all the words.
20:28 That's fine. Except Abby, none of us use the word perilous. Brandon does. Okay. It's a strong word. Okay? The idea of
20:40 troubles, difficulty, stressful situation. It's not just tough times, it's dangerous times. It's difficult times. It's only shown up in
20:52 the this word is only here in this verse and in Matthew 28 where it talks about Jesus when he had come to the other side of the Sea of Galilee to the country of the Gergate
21:04 scenes. There met him 2 demon possessed men coming out of the tombs exceedingly that word fierce is the same word as perilous. Exceedingly fierce
21:16 so that no 1 could pass by them. These are dangerous times that Paul is telling Timothy is gonna exist. And so it's a warning to them. It's a
21:28 warning to him that these aren't just tough times. These aren't just dark times. These are dangerous times. Have we not seen
21:40 believers' compromise in all kinds of areas in our faith and justify it? The closer we get, I believe, to the return of Jesus Christ, the more dark
21:52 our world's gonna get, certainly. But when Jesus says, when the son of man returns, will I really find faith on the earth? What does he mean by that? Does he mean that the
22:04 church is so weak at that point that we're not even close to living righteous? And it's a warning. See, the perilous times were
22:15 certain for the apostle Paul. Again, but know this, that in the last days, perilous times will come. The 1st thing I see here is the certainty
22:28 of those perilous times. We've seen it. We witness it. We see it in our world. I don't think anyone would disagree. I don't think anyone would say, yeah, the world's doing pretty good. I just don't see
22:39 it. And it's not gonna get any better. But the next thing, as Paul catalogs this corruption, we're gonna again look at this real quickly. For men will be lovers of themselves,
22:52 lovers of money, boasters, proud, the whole list. The 1st thing I see in these descriptions is the the lovers of. We see 3 things in
23:03 this. Again, verse 2. Lovers of money or excuse me. Lovers of themselves, lovers of money. And if you go down to verse 4, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of
23:15 God. And as an aside, as I'm reading this, I'm feeling like God is reminding us that if
23:27 our love for him is strong and is growing, we won't have any problem with these things. If we truly
23:39 love god, if we truly love who he is listen to me. I love the things god can do for me,
23:51 but I love a whole lot more who he is. Does that make sense? Love God. Love him. That's why he sent Jesus so that we could be
24:02 reconnected in relationship with the father. And that we right? For god so loved the world, he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes shall not perish but have everlasting life. God wants to be with us
24:14 forever. Does god love you? You can answer. Does god love you? Yes. Yes. He loves you so much. We'll never be
24:26 able to love him that much more. But don't we have to love him? Because when we love him right, didn't Jesus say, if you love me,
24:37 what? Keep my commandments? If you love others, the world will know you belong to me. It's our love for god. It's our love for others
24:50 that reveals to us the heart. So if you look at this, listen, well, I'm not really forgiving, and, oh, I'm not that loving. It's like you just need to fall in love with God. You need to fall in love with
25:02 Jesus again. I so envy and and appreciate when someone I can tell is so in love
25:14 with their with their lord and with god. They just ooze godliness because of their love for him. But the in these last times, in these last days,
25:26 we certainly lovers of themselves, I mean, come on. Social media is a great picture of love for self, is it not? And how many times we have to see people posing
25:37 and taking picture you know, pictures of themselves or I remember driving. I don't even wanna say what state I was in. You'll probably know by the time I say this. But, anyway, I'm driving down a road, and I look over to
25:48 the side, and there's these 2 young girls. One's just doing the posing, you know, and the other one's taking the pictures. I'm like, dear god.
26:00 Did you have to say it? Oh, dear god. But that's the world we're living in.
26:13 People love themselves. They wanna make sure they look their best. You know, The things you put on your faces and the things we do for our hair. Listen. I'm doing everything I can to keep
26:25 as much hair on my head as possible. As you can see, I'm making sure it grows so I have extra for later. I know it's controversial, but we'll get over
26:36 that. Lovers of themselves, isn't that the biggest problem that we deal with in our walk with God? I mean, we we have to care for ourselves.
26:48 We have to feed ourselves. We have to clothe ourselves. We have to take care of ourselves. So there's a lot of ourselves in our in our lives. Right? But let's not love ourselves more than we love the Lord.
27:01 Let's not love our will more than we love his will. Let's not love our ways more than we love his ways. Let us not feel like we deserve anything other than what he gives to
27:14 us. That keeps us in love with him and listen. Care for yourself, but don't be in love with yourself. Live your life for him. Lovers of themselves, lovers of money. We've seen this many
27:26 times in the bible. You know, you can't be a lover of god and a lover of money. Either you give yourself completely to 1 and hate the other or you love the 1 and hate the other.
27:38 So we can't. Lovers of money. Money, we need it. We all have to deal with it. But don't be in love with it. Don't feel you can't live without it.
27:54 Money is a tool that meets needs, and you can't take it with you to heaven. So whatever god gives you,
28:07 make sure it's his and under his control. And then lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.
28:21 Pleasure. Boy, we live in a day where entertainment is everything. You know? Gratification.
28:33 I say it all the time. We've lost the ability to be bored anymore. There's something inside us that constantly needs some type of interaction.
28:46 I may have said this last week on Sunday, but I was in a waiting room at a doctor's office with, like, 30 people, 30 patients or 30 people in the waiting room. 25 of them are all on their phones.
28:58 There's no talking next to each other. There's no discussions. Everybody's on their phone. It's so convicting when I see it, and I'm like, that's me too. I had my
29:10 phone out until I looked at around, and I was like, this is crazy. Because it's we can no longer just sit and be still. To fight these things,
29:22 to fight this list means being still and knowing who god is, being still and acknowledging him.
29:34 There's a lot of things that take our time, and some are required. I get it. Don't I'm not saying abandon everything, but find time in your life to just sit and be still with the lord.
29:47 It'll be challenging at 1st, but let me tell you how refreshing it is. And I would encourage you, if you sit quietly before the lord, tell him everything you're thankful for and that
29:59 you're grateful for in your life. Because the heart of gratitude helps a discontented heart. When you truly look at focusing on the things that you're grateful
30:11 for, and habits can be on the list. It's okay. See, I only do this because that means I get more gift
30:23 cards from Abbotts. I know. I'm terrible. Lovers of themselves, lovers of money, and lovers of pleasure.
30:35 3 misguided loves. Misdirected loves. Paul isn't saying these these people don't love anything. He's saying they've redirected every love inward,
30:47 and God has been evicted from the center of their lives. That's the condition they're in. And once that happens, once God is no longer at the center, it all falls apart.
30:59 Right? Why not? Just satisfy self. That's the world that we're living in. Satisfy self. Don't tell anybody they shouldn't satisfy themselves. Whatever they want is fine. Whatever truth they want is fine. You can't tell
31:10 anybody. But for those of us who know the truth written in the scriptures, we know that god's truth is ultimate
31:22 truth and that we live in victory because of that, not because of our own ideas. The 2nd thing I see in these, number 1 was the self love
31:34 over god love, but the number 2 is relational breakdown. Disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving. The word unloving is a word that means lacking natural
31:46 family affection. Can you imagine? We see it all the time. Unforgiving, slanders without self control, brutal despisers of good, and traitors.
31:59 See, when self sits on the throne, relationships become secondary because it's only about you. It's only about what you're getting back. It's not about you giving, not about what
Embrace Godliness's Power and Turn Away
32:10 you're showing others and not the affection you're showing. It's what you are receiving. See, that's the problem in the world. There's no there's no desire to truly meet someone
32:22 else's needs. As long as my needs are met, everything's good. But as soon as my needs are no longer being met, people in the world, they're just like, well, this this relationship's over because I'm not getting what I
32:33 want. That's so selfish. We're we're to be outward. We're to be others centered. You cannot worship yourself and love your neighbor at the same time.
32:46 That's why Jesus said, love your neighbor as yourself. Love your neighbor the way you love yourself. 3rd is pride masquerading as
32:58 strength, and this is boasters, proud. The word proud literally means shining above others, headstrong, haughty. What looks like confidence is actually a hollowed out
33:10 ego demanding to be worshiped themselves. The sobering part is that is this I truly believe this is not a description
33:22 of an unholy culture. I think it's a description of the hearts of people inside the church. And Paul is telling Timothy, be watchful for these things. Deal with these things. These
33:34 conditions of the heart need to be dealt with because all of these at the root are a heart issue. Right? And so if your heart is right, your life will be right. If your heart is wrong, your life will be
33:46 wrong. So deal with the heart. The list describes what happens inside of religious communities when substance
33:58 drains out and performance remains. Isaiah chapter 29 verse 13 says this, therefore, the Lord said,
34:10 in as much as these people draw near to me with their mouths and honor me with their lips, but have removed their hearts far from me.
34:22 And their fear toward me is taught by the commandment of men. There's the warning. God knew. The outward
34:34 means nothing. The outward can be fake. The outward can be a mask, can be, you know, a trickery. It's what's inside that matters. It's what's in the
34:46 heart. If you've ever been to, what is it called, Universal Studios, have you ever been on a set? You
34:57 know? The whole neighborhood. Right? Beautiful neighborhood, beautiful homes, beautiful business, great streets, street lights. Walk around behind it. What is there? Plywood and 2 by fours.
35:10 No substance. It's all outward shine, but no inward strength. We gotta focus on what's inward. So god says, listen. They draw near to me with their mouths and honor
35:22 me with their lips, but have removed their hearts from me. It's a heart condition. So get your heart right before god, and none of these things will become an
35:33 issue because god will guide you and direct you. I thought it would be good for us as believers in Christ, when we look at a list like this
35:45 and go, boy, I hope I don't have all of these things. I don't know. The Lord just, last night as I was going through this, made me think about what's the opposite of this list? What's the
35:57 contrast to this list? Because I think that's what we should focus on, is the contrast. And so this is what I came up with. Lovers of others, generous, humble,

37:09 generous. Help me to be love loving or humble. Help me to be lowly in spirit and reverent. All of these things that god wants us to be. That's what should be coming out of our lives from the
37:21 root of our love for god because at the end, we're lovers of god. And I think that's what encompasses the entire thing.
37:34 And so as we read lists like this, let's also remember the list that god wants us to be. The certainty of perilous times, we live in them. The catalog of
37:46 corruption, we just read it. Finally, verse 5. Having a form of godliness, but denying its power. And
