See Like Jesus 0:01 For this day. Thank you for this time, Lord. I pray that you would, just settle in right here with us, that your spirit would descend down on this sanctuary today.0:14 Like always, we pray that, lord, if you're not here, then there's no sense in us being here. So, lord, come and meet us right here where we're at. We thank you for your0:26 word that it's sharp and it penetrates our hearts, lord, and it teaches us. Even things that we've read over and over before, lord, you continue to teach0:38 us. You're amazing. So, Lord, be with us as we study your word. We love you, Lord, and we praise you. In Jesus' name, amen.0:51 Well, how are you guys today? I asked, and everybody said, good. Are you really good? You know? Seriously. Or are you good as much as you wanna tell,1:03 you know, to share? Well, you know, somebody asked me the question this morning. How are you doing? You know, how was this? How... And, and I was like, well, you know,1:15 I can tell you good and then move on, but I wouldn't be telling you the truth. You know? Or I can say, yeah, you know, have this going on or that. And, and...1:27 But that's what we do. Right? You know, we do a lot of that. I'm gonna share a story with you and I'm gonna... I want you to say, I promise. Okay? Don't judge me on this story.1:39 You promise? I promise. Promise. Okay. Alright. So, last week, I was on my way to, to work. I was on my way here and I was
1:51 driving through 1 of the developments. And as I was coming close to sunset, I have this little older lady go... She was out by her mailbox or
2:03 the mailbox and she goes like this. And and I said, she want me to stop? And, you know, I was 100 yard... I mean, a couple hundred feet
2:15 away from her. And as I got closer, she made eye contact. I said, oh, she definitely wants me to stop. So I stopped and I rolled down the window. I said, can I help you? And she says, yeah. My battery's
2:26 dead and, can you give me a jump? And so I said, well, I don't have any jumper cables. And she said, I I get. So, obviously, it was a little bit of a,
2:39 you know, a little broken English, Sharon. I said, okay. So she... I'm sitting in the road and she's going, and I'm thinking to myself, well, let me get ready. So I backed down the driveway, head up to her car,
2:51 and she comes back with a new set of, jumper cables all rolled up and everything. So I unpackage it kind of and unroll it, and I'm thinking to myself, I don't have time for this. I
3:03 really, you know, I really don't have time for this. This is... I know it's not gonna take any long, you know, that... It's not gonna take that much time, but, hopefully, the battery just jumps. But I just don't have
3:14 time. I don't wanna do this. That's what I said. I don't wanna do this. So anyway, I lift my hood up and she comes around. I hook up to mine. And I go to hook up to hers and
3:26 she goes, woah. Woah. Woah. Woah. And she's on the phone. And I go, what? She goes, make sure you put the right colors on. And I... So I said, oh,
3:38 okay. Thank you. Incidentally, if you ever have to say that to somebody who's jumping your car, you got the wrong person. But anyway, so it
3:50 took 5 minutes, maybe, to to jump her car. And she was in a hurry, obviously. She didn't live there. She was going to another job. I think maybe she was, cleaning or something.
4:02 But the fact of the matter is I just didn't wanna help. I didn't wanna be bothered. I didn't know that person. And, you know, it wasn't an emergency. Obviously, she seemed like it... She needed
4:14 to really go. But you know what I was listening to? I was listening to the parable of the good Samaritan. So,
4:26 yeah, it was it was, it was pretty funny, you know, how, you know, god. Did I fail? Did I fail? No. I did it. No. But my heart wasn't
4:38 right. Right? I didn't have time. I didn't wanna go. I had better things to do. And we're gonna hear a story about that because that's what we're gonna be teaching on. That's what we're gonna be studying today
4:50 is the story about the Good Samaritan. And, so sometimes we think that everything's
5:01 okay. Everything... We're doing everything the way, you know, God has designed me to do. But you know what? Sometimes we're a little bit off, and he has to do something
5:13 to kinda nudge you. And, you know, you guys know me. I mean, hey, listen. If you were pulled over and you said I need to jump, and I said, I don't have battery
5:25 cable, you know, I don't have cables to jump your car. I would go get them and come back. But you know what? The truth is, don't judge me,
5:37 I wouldn't have done that last week. So, anyway, it's kinda hard when, god
5:49 convicts you about things that you do. And the thing is, he's always doing it to me. What's going on? Do you guys do you guys get convicted about things?
6:00 Okay. So that... I mean, this story is obviously about a good Samaritan, but it's also about a lawyer. And so we're gonna study about
6:12 this, and, we're gonna be reading out of, Luke chapter 10. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand and, Gary, pass 1 out to you
6:25 before we get started. I got 1. Thank you. Yeah.
6:40 So we're in Luke, chapter 10. I wanna go ahead and read through this. Now this is gonna be a little bit different and even different than I usually... We're gonna read it. We're gonna go through it, and
6:52 then I'm gonna come back and give some points of application at the end. But let's look, verse 25. And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, being
7:04 Jesus, saying, teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life? And he said to him, what is written in the law? What is your reading of it? And he said...
7:16 He answered and said, you shall love the lord your god with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. And he said
7:28 to him, you have answered rightly. Do this and you will live. But he wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, and who is my neighbor? And Jesus answered
7:40 and said, a certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among the thieves who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him 0.5 dead.
7:52 Now by chance, a certain priest came down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise, a Levite, when he arrived at the place,
8:04 he came and looked and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was, and he saw him, and he had compassion.
8:17 So he went to him, and he bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and set him on his own animal, and he brought him to an inn, and he took care of him.
8:29 On the next day, when he departed, he took 2 denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. And he said to him, take care of him, and whatever more you spend when I come
8:41 again, I will repay you. So which of these 3 do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves? And he said,
8:53 he who showed mercy on him. Then Jesus said, go... Said to him, go and do likewise. So we have this story,
9:04 and what what is it about? It's about a good Samaritan. Right? It's a... It's about this lawyer too. We get to look at this
9:16 lawyer's life, his job, his performance, and his heart. Just a little
9:27 background. On... In in Luke chapter 10, Jesus sends out 70 disciples to go 2 by 2, and they're gonna go in throughout the countryside and they're going to
9:39 minister to the people because the people had no spiritual leadership. And so Jesus sends them out. He prepares them and then he sends them out. They come back all
9:51 fired up and tell Jesus about their mission trip. They said they said, Lord, the demons had to submit to us because of your name. Actually, it says,
10:04 lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name. And Jesus... I'm not gonna say exact... He said, be careful. Be careful. Why? Because that was
10:16 Satan's attitude when he was cast from heaven. He says, behold, I give you authority to trample serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. And nothing, that means
10:27 0, nothing, by any means shall hurt you. And he said he said, don't... But don't rejoice in the fact that the demons were subject to you
10:39 in my name. Be, rejoicing that your name is written in heaven. And I don't know if you caught it here, but when that lawyer stood
10:51 up, what was his question? What shall I do to have eternal life? See, in this little situation
11:03 here where Jesus is sitting among these disciples and talking to them and and and vice versa, Jesus prays and he says, lord of heaven and earth, thank you that you have
11:14 hidden these things. What things? About heaven. These things from the wise and prudent and real... Revealed it to these little babes, talking about
11:26 the disciples. These simple men. Jesus picked the most simple men, and he said, you've re... Revealed salvation to them, but you've kept
11:38 it from these wise and prudent men. What do you think this lawyer was thinking? What must I do to inherit eternal life? What about me? And
11:50 so instead of Jesus saying 2 words, follow me, What'd he say? Says, I don't know. You tell me. You're a lawyer. He
12:02 wasn't a trial lawyer. He was a, he was an expert. He had a PhD in the Mosaic law. Excuse me.
12:14 His job, it included interpreting scripture, teaching, and applying it. Applying it, he wrote contracts. He took the word and he goes, okay. This is the
12:26 way I need to, word this contract. Legal documents, he helped out in judicial matters and in judging and advising. That's what this guy did.
12:38 That was his job. So Jesus says, you're the expert, you tell me. What does the law... What does it say? What does your word say? I love the fact that Jesus could've gave him the
12:50 answer. Follow me. And he said, go look it up in the word. Sends us to the words. You know, it's a message to us as well. And he answers,
13:02 and he gives this answer. He says, love the lord your god with all your heart, your soul, your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. He he quotes from 2 different sections.
13:13 Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 5, which is part of the Shema, and Leviticus chapter, 19 verse 18. 2 different places. He brought it in.
13:25 This guy could... He probably... The commentators said that he could. I just can't imagine this. We just went through, numbers and some had just to
13:37 be able to memorize all that scripture from Genesis to Deuteronomy. It... That seems like an impossibility with all those names and genealogies and all that kind of stuff.
13:49 I don't know, but that's what this guy's job was, and he was proficient at it. He took 2 sections, pulled it together, and says, this is how. And what did Jesus say? Well, do that.
14:02 Go ahead and do that. And it's interesting because we know better than that. Can we keep the law? Can we keep all 10 commandments? On the
14:14 surface, we can. You know? I I wouldn't kill anybody. You hate somebody? Jesus says, if you hate somebody, you've killed them and so on.
14:25 You know, the purpose of the law was to reveal sin. In Romans 3, verse 20,
14:38 Paul wrote, therefore, by the deeds, no flesh will be justified in his sight for by the law is the knowledge of sin. This guy must have said this. This
14:49 lawyer must have said this to Jesus and said, I wish it said, love God with your heart, with your soul, with your strength, and with your
15:01 mind. But it's all messed up because it says all. And how do we do that? Hey. Can you say I love Jesus? I love Jesus. You love Jesus. Right?
15:13 Do you always love Jesus? How many times do... A day. How many times a day do we decide to to pick our will over his will? You know?
15:25 Well, that's what this guy is feeling too. And it says, wanting to justify himself. So, you know, he's he's gonna try and make himself right on this and and,
15:37 you know, he's not gonna do that. Jesus isn't gonna let him do that. This lawyer, plain and simple, needs Jesus. But he says, who is my neighbor? He wants clarification. You
15:49 know, define neighbor. What's a neighbor? I mean, here, neighbors are the people sitting around you. Right? At home, people who live around you. At work, people that you work with.
16:01 Right? So, you know, define neighbor. You know, do I have to like them or are they just the people that I like? Let's... Jesus, tell me what my
16:13 neighbor... Who my neighbor is. All he wanted to do is make this big label, neighbor, a little tiny. Just let me bring it down to a little circle
The Lawyer Tests Jesus
16:25 because I don't wanna put it... I don't wanna put out that much. I want to limit who I have to love. So Jesus, he could have made it very simple and said 1 word this time. Right?
16:38 Everyone. Who's my neighbor? Everyone. But he doesn't do that. He allows this lawyer to figure it out for himself and he tells this parable. Now
16:49 this parable is... It could be a true story. Very well could be a true story because of Jerusalem, the the... You know, Jerusalem was up on a
17:01 hill. It's 2400 feet higher, above, sea level. Excuse me. And, he's traveling down to, to
17:13 Jericho, and that's 850 feet below sea level. And so it's like he's traveling, like, really a steep, you know, incline in 17 miles,
17:25 a windy road, and, this particular road was known. It was known as the bloody way or the bloody highway. And, you know,
17:36 Jesus tells his story and what happens to him and, you know, he was robbed, he was stripped, he was beaten 0.5 to death, and he was left. And,
17:50 you know, when I read this... Let me just stop for a 2nd. When I read this, there's a certain lawyer. There's a certain man. We read about a certain priest, a Levite, and then a certain
18:02 Samaritan. It was almost as if these people were specifically picked for this purpose, for this job, or this description.
18:15 You might say, well, the guy should have never... If it was known to be a dangerous road, he should have never traveled alone. But as we read, the lawyer... I mean, I'm sorry. The priest, the Levite, and
18:27 the Samaritan, they were all alone as well. But this guy, travels this road. He's beaten. He's left for dead. Then the priest comes down and, you know, you could
18:39 just see the guy laying on the ground and saying, thank God. I need help. There's a priest coming. My pastor is coming. You know, whatever. And the
18:51 guy sees him. The priest sees him and says, I can't do this. And he goes to the other side. You know, what are the reasons? Could be a a bunch of reasons, million
19:03 reasons. Could just say, hey. The blood. I can't touch the blood. I can't, you know, touch a corpse. I'll be unclean. It could be I'm ready for dinner.
19:15 I mean, my wife's got dinner ready, you know, or I got a job or I gotta get to work. I don't have time for this. I got better things to do than this. It could be it could be anything,
19:27 but he decides that he's not going to help. A religious man and yet, just not available. Okay. Well, how about the Levite? The Levite. Well, I can
19:39 understand the priest doesn't wanna get his hands dirty maybe. I'm not making any comparison with pastor Rob and me, but, no. He gets his hands
19:51 dirty. No. But this Levite, oh, he's gonna help me. You know, a Levite is is somebody who works in... He's like the assistant pastor in the temple. You know? He does
20:02 all the things that the pastor doesn't wanna do. You know? He's gonna help me, but no. He does the same thing. He looks at him and he says, goes to the other side.
20:14 Now, you know, he asked a question... The lawyer asked a question, who's my neighbor? And I quoted, well, he quotes, love your neighbor as yourself. That's Leviticus chapter 19
20:26 verse 18. But the beginning of that says, you shall not take vengeance nor bear a grudge against any of the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor
20:39 as yourself. I am the Lord. So what it's saying is, Jews, fellow Jews, that's the neighbor. These 2 Jews, and see
20:50 this fellow Jew destitute, dying, bleeding, needing help, and they didn't help him. They didn't do what the law caused them to do.
21:02 And, and so there's not a there's not a good excuse for that. But then there's a certain Samaritan and he passes
21:14 by. Now just to let you know, a Samaritan is somebody that they just... Samaritans and Jews don't get along. They have a toxic relationship. If a Jew walked
21:26 through a Samaritan territory, it wouldn't be uncommon for him to be put to death. They hated each other. And it... The reason was because the Jews called them 0.5
21:38 breeds. They weren't they weren't pedigree Jews, I guess you could say. They were part Assyrian. And and they... The Samaritans
21:49 took, exception to that. And so they hated each other. And, you have this Samaritan coming by and he notices this
22:01 man on the side of the road and he knows that he needs help. When the Samaritan saw... Anyway, sorry.
22:14 Yes. The name of the the sermon is see like Jesus. But you see that. This... The Samaritan saw
22:26 and what? He saw the beaten Jew and he had compassion. This word compassion... Let me say this right, because the lower intestines... Movement of the lower intestines.
22:39 Wanna make sure I don't say, never mind. You just. But it is an urging that comes from in... No.
22:50 It... From your... Just your insides. You know with all your heart, you gotta help. He was moved with... It's it's not a feeling like, I should probably help this guy. He could use a hand. This
23:02 is like, I have to do this. He was moved with compassion. The priest and the Levite, they saw this man the same way. Right? But not with compassion. They saw with, I
23:14 will not stoop down to you and get my hands dirty for you. That's what kind of eyes they saw him. And the sad thing is is they were neighbors. They were brothers. Brother,
23:27 in... A brotherhood in the Jewish religion and and whatnot. But Jesus saw people
23:39 with compassion. Like, he saw someone, a young lady with the flow of blood, and he healed that. His compassion for her, he healed that. He saw the lepers, the 10
23:51 lepers, and he had compassion. He healed that. He saw the multitude that had no spiritual leadership. They were like sheep without a without a, shepherd, and he
24:03 sent people out to them. He he healed them too. He had compassion over the multitude that he fed a couple times. He
24:15 healed all their sick. Jesus had compassion. He did something with it. The Samaritan acted just like Jesus. When you see this picture,
24:26 you see Jesus in this picture. He took oil. And you think about, well, if I have a cut or something, I don't know how oil... The the... Your... The
24:38 blood coagulates and dries and it gets hard and crusty, and the the guy's hurt. He's been cut. He's been torn, and he soothes the
24:50 the wounds with oil. Oil's a picture of the holy spirit too. He used wine. He poured wine on his cuts that would be an
25:02 antiseptic to clean it. And you think about the cleansing blood of Jesus as we read, the wonder of the working blood. It's not just the blood. This... It always
25:14 works. That that blood that Jesus shed, he... It's for every single 1 of us. There's not 1 person that could ever hear the message of Jesus and say that's
25:25 not for me. That was their... That would be their choice. He bandaged the wound. You think... He he didn't... He wasn't traveling with a 1st aid kit. He just made
25:37 do with what he had, probably. Maybe he cut his own clothes. Maybe maybe he cut a blanket or something, but he he bandaged this guy up. He splinted
25:49 whatever he had to do, and then he got off his own animal. Well, he got off his animal anyway, and he put this this Jewish man on there. He put his enemy on and gave him the transportation,
26:01 and he walked the rest of the way. And then he found an inn, and he stayed the night, no doubt giving the the
26:13 guy clothing, giving the guide food and water, changing bandages. The Samaritan sacrificed. He sacrificed.
26:25 He took care of them. And then on the next day, he made sure that the care would continue. He gave this 2 dinari was 2, days pay for a person,
26:37 and it would be enough to take care of, this this Jewish man for 2 weeks, up to 2 weeks. And he says that... He says to him, he says, and when
26:49 I come back, which he was saying he was definitely coming back. When I come back, I'm... I'll pay you whatever whatever. Sky is the limit. Whatever it cost, I'll pay.
27:01 He paid in full. He would pay in full. I'm sorry. This man never stopped giving. This picture of the Samaritan, somebody who's
27:13 not well liked, just very unexpected, gives of himself, makes a sacrifice, definitely a picture of
27:25 Jesus. The question was, who is my neighbor? That was the original... Well, that was the question, when he said love, love your neighbor as yourself.
27:37 He says, but wait. Who is my neighbor? That was the the question. And after the story, he answers the lawyer's question again
27:49 with a question. And he he says, so he he asked him, he says, well, who, which
28:01 which 1 of these 3 do you think was a neighbor to those who fell among the thieves? And, and so the law... Or the... Yeah. The lawyer said, the
28:13 man whom showed who showed the mercy. Okay. This this word mercy, you would say, mercy is not getting what you deserve. Right?
28:25 Compassion is different. Okay? But compassion moves you to action and mercy is what you receive.
28:37 And this is this is what this man gave. He gave... He says the man who gave the mercy. You know, he couldn't even say. He couldn't even give credit to the Samaritan
28:49 that... Of the amazing love that he showed for this man, this enemy. He couldn't even say the name Samaritan. He didn't want it to go through his lips. He said the man who showed mercy. And Jesus says, go
29:01 and do likewise. He's... You go and do that. You wanna know who your neighbor is? This... You go and do this. You take care of... And and, basically, he's saying everyone,
29:13 be like the Samaritan. In Matthew chapter 5, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said it like this. He says,
29:25 you have heard it said that you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. That's exactly the way the culture was. You loved your neighbors and you hated those who came against... We just
29:37 went through numbers, and there's somebody designated in the family that is, if if somebody in your family was killed, then this person
29:49 was designated to go and take care of business. That was... That's what you did. He was your enemy. That... That's the way they did things in that day. That was their culture.
30:02 Jesus says, but I say to you, love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spite... Spitefully persecute...
30:13 Spitefully use you and persecute you that you may be sons of your father in heaven. Doesn't it go back to exactly what the guy was saying? How much... How
30:25 must I inherit the kingdom of God or or eternal life? So Jesus tells him, go do that. Twice, he says, go do
30:37 it. Yeah. Love the lord your god with all your heart, your soul, your mind, and your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Do it. Do it. Show mercy and compassion to even
30:49 my enemies? Yeah. Go do it. Do it. Well, we think about that and it's like, can we really just do that all the time? No. No. It's
31:01 hard. It's hard. I asked you not to judge me because, I mean, here I am, this... A pastor's coming and, driving down the road, and it's like, no. I don't have time to help you.
31:12 I I really don't, but I will if I have to. You know, I I wanted to pull out some, points of application in this story. The story is not
31:24 all about, you know, helping somebody. Although, Jesus says, do it. Even if they're your enemy, do it. The 1st thing that I see and the most
31:36 important thing, and by the way, it's very convicting for me, is god's word is for me. Now I can stand here and say god's word is for you to take it
31:48 personal because it transforms your life. It's for you. But I don't want you to get the idea like this lawyer who his job was to know the scripture, teach the scripture,
32:00 and and apply the scripture. He didn't apply the scripture to his life. He didn't live like that. And it's hard when you realize that even the the guy that
32:12 comes up here and teaches out of this word struggles with this sometimes, that we can't live up to the standard that
32:24 god has set for us to eat... To inherit eternal life. There's only 1 reason that we're fortunate enough to stand up here or to minister
32:36 to people just like you. It's because of Jesus. God's word is for me. I say that you can say the same thing. It's for me.
32:48 You have to read it like this is for me. Okay. Yet you might say, this is a good word for somebody that I know is going through this. Guard
33:00 against that. Guard against that seriously. Or maybe having the head knowledge like this guy and not living it out, not applying to our... Applying it
33:12 to your life. And it's hard. But, you know, James 3 1 tells you, be careful because you who are teachers, you're gonna receive a stricter judgment. Gosh. That
33:24 hurts. Lord. Okay. Forgiveness. Forgiveness. Jesus will always forgive you if you ask me. Okay. So
33:35 God's word is for me, number 1. Number 2, see past the obvious. See like Jesus. Hey. 3 people saw this. Right? And only 1 person saw it like Jesus.
33:47 The less... The most unlikely saw it like Jesus. Look, Pat. You can recognize the need, and I would say that all 3 of the... These guys said, he needs some
33:59 help. Only 1 person said, I'll be that help. See past the obvious. Recognize the need. Accept the fact that compassion has a
34:11 cost. Time, effort, resources. Just... Hey. That's the cost of doing business. You wanna be a Christian and Jesus tells us to go and doShow more
