Global Prayer on Luke 2:8-9

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

Today’s prayer

Written prayer

Precious father, this is a glorious moment in history. The day your son entered into this world you came first to the lowly shepherds watching over their flock in the night watch. I can imagine how frightened they must have been when your angel showed up and filled their pasture with your glory. Why did you choose shepherds as the first to hear the glorious news of the birth of the Savior of the world? Shepherds were held in low estimation among the people. But these humble shepherds exemplified the kind of true leadership you were looking for in those who one day would Shepherd your people and watch over them. You honor the humble and those who protect the defenseless. The sheep have no way to defend themselves against attack except for the staff of the Shepherd. You dear Jesus, you are the good Shepherd and you are the one who guards and protects us from the assaults of the enemy. Thank you for this magnificent illustration of your compassionate heart of mercy for the meek and those of lowly position. As we prepare for this season of love, peace and harmony bring to our remembrance the one who came to exemplify those beautiful qualities through his life. Thank you father for your precious son, Jesus, who came to the earth to die that I might live. In Jesus name, amen.
