Today’s prayer
Written prayerFather, I have to laugh as I ponder this verse. It should be read - after the shepherds got over their terrifying shock of experiencing a heavenly visitation, and the angels had departed, the shepherds came back to their senses. I would want to do exactly what they did and rush to Bethlehem to see if what they just heard from the angel of the Lord was true. I certainly would want to see this wonderful and important event that God had just brought to pass and made known to me. I think at this point fear must have been replaced with excitement and curiosity. I love the tenderness of your heart in proclaiming the good news to the poor shepherds out in the cold night faithfully watching over their sheep. The lowest and simplest of men are not exempt from your divine visitation and love. You lift up the poor and needy and bring down the proud and arrogant. Compassion and mercy are the hallmark of your character. If only people knew the truth of who you are they would fall in love with you and trust you. Even the true message of Christmas has been commercialized and your powerful act of love is obscured with the festivities. I pray the true meaning of Christmas will live in my heart all year round. In Jesus name, amen.
