German Protestant Church. As the Nazis gained power, Bonhoeffer recognized the growing evil and was compelled to speak out. He famously stated, "Silence in the face of evil is evil itself. God will not hold us guiltless." Bonhoeffer, along with other church leaders like Martin Niemöller, led efforts to unite churches against the Nazi regime, but they were only able to rally a small group of 3,000 churches. The rest chose to remain uninvolved, which contributed to the atrocities of the Holocaust and the broader devastation of World War II. Just as Bonhoeffer urged churches and individuals to stand against the injustice of his time, in 2024, we must call for action and refuse to remain silent in the face of present-day evil.
