Why Did Jesus Have to Die? The Day of Atonement Explained 0:07 I'm here with Dustin Roberts, my producer and outreach minister for Discovering the Jewish Jesus. I'm gonna talk a little bit more about where we are. But I'm gonna talk today, you're gonna hear a teaching on Yom Kippur,0:19 the Day of Atonement. And Dustin, before we get into some of the topography here, and you're gonna help us understand some of the things that we're looking at in a bit more detail than I do in my teaching, I just wanted0:30 to share with our viewers a little bit about what it was like for me as a Jewish person, growing up in a Jewish home, going to synagogue on the Day of Atonement Wow. Every year, and what that felt like.0:42 So the the 1st thing is it just was the sense of community. All the Jewish people, Dustin, all my friends that I went to school with, everyone was at synagogue. And it was just a time of year0:53 where you really felt that strong sense of identity as a Jew.0:59 Yeah. Help us understand how it is1:02 windy. It's really windy.1:03 Help us understand, Rabbi, you're you're a kid. What ages are you going to synagogue and experiencing this with and and why is the community so big in the US where you are at? Yeah.1:12 You know, the interesting thing was in Hebrew school Yeah. They didn't really give us a strong Bible foundation. Like, they didn't talk about the blood that I remember at Yom Kippur. We went through all the Hebrew1:24 liturgy, and we went through the prayer book. It was very solemn, but there was no solid Bible teaching
1:31 Mhmm.
1:32 About the importance of a blood sacrifice, which is crucial to the Torah because Jewish people don't have a blood sacrifice anymore. They don't sacrifice the animals, they don't, they don't believe in Jesus, so all they
1:42 do is focus on the liturgy and the prayers in the synagogue.
1:45 Yeah, you're right. You said something really interesting there. You, you know, you didn't get the Bible teaching. We as Christians, we get Bible teaching, but around these feasts, what you had was community. The Jewish,
1:56 they have community, but the church, we don't really have great community yet True. Around the feasts. Wow, I like that. Being here in Israel, we just saw, the Feast of Trumpets, Rosh Hashanah
2:08 Mhmm. And saw lots of community and people celebrating. They were blowing the shofar with you. 2 guys came into the restaurant with you, and you and them, they blew the shofar together to announce God's new year.
2:19 That was awesome.
2:20 But that doesn't happen in the US, in the church in the US. The church isn't connected that way.
2:24 Yeah. You were just saying to me yesterday, you said, Rabbi, think what would happen if every congregation was celebrating these feasts. Just like in Israel, I was so blessed to to to be participating in
2:36 what's going on here right now with the celebration of Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur because everybody is in tune with this here. Like Dustin just shared, people coming into the restaurant, Hasidic
2:48 Orthodox Jews blowing the shofars, and, yeah, that community that all the people that live in the land, they feel that community. Right. They feel connected because they're all participating in the
3:00 same, the same thing.
3:01 It's so powerful. I just think about our, our church, the church, and if we could capture that, especially in America, like we celebrate Christmas, and we celebrate Easter, but if we
3:13 could understand Tabernacles, the Day of Atonement, which you are, have a powerful teaching coming up on, and we could really experience something amazing from the Lord.
3:22 We really would, bro. I'm in, I'm in 100 percent agreement with that. I think it'd be so cool. Dustin, tell us a little bit about the southern steps we see over here as we see into the background.
3:32 Yeah, absolutely. Well, here we are, Temple Mount right here. This is where the temple would have stood where you see the Dome of the Rock, which is now a Muslim mosque. And it would have been the temple that Jesus, you
3:43 know, taught at, stood at, and, you know, walked around. And then right below it down here is the southern steps. You can actually see the ruins down below. They're actually the old entrance
3:56 to the temple. So if you would have been here in Jesus' time and you were entering the temple, that's where you would have entered. And I love this verse in the Bible, Rabbi, that says, the way that you enter, you have
4:05 to exit out another side. So they would exit they would come in. If they came in from the south, they had to exit in the north. And I like that because what I feel like God is saying is, is that you can't
4:17 go in the way you came out. So when you encounter God, you come in, if you come in from the south down here, you encounter God. You have to exit on the north. You have to walk all the way back around to get to back to
4:27 where you're going, but you're changed.
4:28 I like that a lot.
4:29 Yeah, when we encounter God, God changes us.
4:32 That's powerful. That is so beautiful.
4:33 And then we have right up here, if you look up, there's a blue building up here, Mount Zion. And so, when David brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem, he would
4:45 have brought it right up here to Mount Zion, right where that blue building is, and that's where they would have had the Tabernacle before they built the Temple. And what's really neat about that is we read all these
4:57 Psalms about ascending the hill of the Lord and as we approach Zion and it's just such a really amazing area of history that we're standing at right now.
5:06 Amen. It reminds me of that song Come Let Us Go Up. It's taken right out of the scriptures. Come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord. Go up to the house,
5:19 To the house of Jacob Well, I love singing. Somebody said to me 1 time, Rabbi, you're no singer, but I love singing, and I love what you just said, it
5:31 just inspired me, Dustin. We go up to the house of the Lord. Amen. And when we come to Israel as Jews, when we return here, it's said that we make Aliyah. No matter what part of the world we come from,
5:42 we're going up. If we're coming from Russia, from from the Mediterranean area, from Poland, wherever it is, India, no matter where we come to Israel from, we're making Aliyah,
5:54 we're going up because this is the highest place on the planet. Get ready now to hear the word of the Lord. Beloved, I'm standing
6:06 here in Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives. The very spot that I'm standing, it is the center of the planet. This is where Yeshua rose to heaven from, this is where he's gonna 1st
The Blood of the Lamb and the Tabernacle Pattern
6:17 manifest himself at his return. But today, I wanna talk to you about the most holy sacred day on God's calendar. We're gonna talk about the day
6:29 of atonement, Yom Kippur. Now behind me, you'll see the Dome of the Rock. You'll see the wall that held up the ancient temple. Behind the trees in the background is the western wall where
6:41 Jewish people come to pray every single day. We are standing in the most sacred space on the planet. Many years ago, I had an experience 1 night. And in this vision of the night,
6:53 I found myself in outer space as if I was an astronaut looking down upon the globe, looking down at planet Earth. And up from the planet was a sphere,
7:05 and the sphere came right up from the top of the earth. So I observed this sphere extended up from the top of planet earth, and this sphere went straight up into the heavens.
7:17 On top of the sphere was Israel, and I felt the weight and the glory of God. We're talking today about Yom Kippur, the
7:29 Day of Atonement, and we're doing it from the most sacred spot on the planet. I'm going to share some scriptures with you today. They're going to help you to understand the preciousness
7:43 of the blood of Jesus. What I'm going to share with you today will help you to understand why Christianity is not just 1 of many religions, Christianity is not just 1 of many religions, and it's
7:54 gonna help you to understand why the blood of Jesus, of Yeshua, is so very precious and important. We're going to begin today by going
8:06 back thousands of years in history. We're going to go back now 3500 years to the shedding of the blood that brought
8:18 Israel into liberation out of Egypt. 3500 years ago, the Lord spoke to Moses and commanded him to shed the blood of a precious lamb. And that to take
8:30 the blood of that lamb and to have the Israelites apply it to the doorpost of their homes. So the children of Israel, every family got their own lamb.
8:42 Each family put their lamb to death. They gathered the blood of that lamb in a basin. The blood then had to be taken out of that basin and applied
8:54 to their personal lives. It had to be applied to the doorpost of their home. And then that night when the angel of death, when the angel of judgment passed through the land, every
9:06 home that was covered in the blood of the lamb was passed over and judgment did not fall. Why do I tell you that about Yom Kippur, about the day of atonement? Because the same blood that
9:18 saved Israel, the blood of the lamb, that is the blood, beloved, that was fully manifest through Messiah Yeshua, Yeshua of Nazareth 2000 years ago, when he
9:29 shed it on the cross. You see Yom Kippur, the day of atonement is all about the blood. The scripture tells us in the Torah, in the book of Leviticus
9:41 chapter 17 verse 11, that the life of the flesh is in the blood. And I've given it to you on the altar, sayeth the Lord, to make an atonement for your soul.
9:53 For it's the blood, my reason if it's life, that makes atonement. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament is mostly about how the blood of Yeshua fulfills the day of atonement.
10:05 That 3500 years ago, when the children of Israel began to participate in Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, by bringing the blood of a bull and a goat into the
10:17 holy of holies, that sacred spot in the temple, and poured it on the mercy seat, which was a place over the ark of the covenant where the 10 commandments were. The Lord, when
10:29 he saw the blood, He overlooked their sin because again, the life of the flesh is in the blood. Your forgiveness, the forgiveness of your sin
10:41 is all rooted in a blood sacrifice, a sacrificial atonement. The holy day of Yom Kippur, it was fulfilled
10:53 when Messiah Yeshua shed His blood for you and me. I wanna help you understand this even further. If you and I are to have a relationship with God, then we
11:05 must have a blood atonement, a personal blood atonement that's covering our life. Even as ancient Israel had to put that blood over their doorpost, we see this theme developed
11:17 in this way. Moses went up on top of Mount Sinai to receive the word of God for Israel, and he received the law and the covenant. He came down from
11:29 Mount Sinai and he read the law to the people. And after reading the law to the people that Moses had received on top of Mount Sinai, after reading it to
11:41 Israel, Israel responded by saying, all that the Lord has said, we will do. And so Israel accepted the covenant. And after
11:53 Israel accepted the covenant, you know what Moses did next? He sprinkled Israel with what? With blood.
12:05 And then the theme continues when the Lord told Moses to build what we call in Hebrew, a mishkan. We in English, we call it a tabernacle. It was the dwelling place
12:17 of God amongst ancient Israel. The Lord told Moses, I want you to build me a dwelling place. I want you to build me this mishkan, this tabernacle. And the Lord
12:28 said to Moses, I want you to build it exactly according to the pattern that I'm showing you. The Lord told Moses the pattern for the tabernacle, how long it should be,
12:41 how wide it should be, what it should be made out of, all the different pieces of furniture inside it, that there was only 1 entrance in. And so when Israel wanted to come and draw
12:53 near to God, they had to come through the 1 entrance into the tabernacle that the Lord had outlined in the instructions. And remember, every piece of the tabernacle
13:04 was orchestrated by God himself. He gave Israel the blueprint of it. It all means something. So when an Israelite came to meet with God, because that's where God dwelt, he dwelt over the
13:16 tabernacle. You could actually see his manifest presence as a glory cloud by day and a fire by night. And so what happened was when an Israelite came to meet with
13:28 God, they entered into that 1 door, which represents Yeshua. And when they entered in, there was an altar there, the brazen altar. And what the Israelite did was they brought a
13:40 sacrifice with them, and they gave their sacrifice to the priest. The priest would then bind the sacrifice on the altar inside the tabernacle. This was the 1st
13:51 place that the worshiper saw. The worshiper brought a sacrifice, gave it to the priest. The priest bound the sacrifice onto the altar by the 4 horns, and then listen to what happened next.
14:04 The worshiper would lay his hands on top of the sacrifice and literally press himself into the offering, thereby transferring a sin into the animal,
14:16 then the priest would put the animal to death. Because of that blood sacrifice, now that worshiper was free to connect with God, but not until that
14:27 innocent sacrifice, that innocent animal absorbed the sin of the worshiper, the Israelite, and died in that worshiper's place. Yeshua, my friend, died in your
14:39 place. Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, is the celebration and the exaltation of the fact that King Jesus of Nazareth took your
14:51 sin and my sin in his own body on the tree, just as that worshiper pressed his sin into the animal, and then the animal was put to death in the worshiper's place. King Yeshua
Yeshua Fulfilled the Day of Atonement
15:03 took your sin and my sin into his body, then hung on that cross with the nails through His hands, the nails through His feet, with the blood coming down His side as the spear was
15:14 pressed in. And through that blood atonement, you and I have now been forgiven once and for all and forever. You see these sacrifices
15:26 in the Hebrew Bible that took place on the day of atonement, they gave Israel covering for a year, but they had to keep on making the sacrifices year after year. Every year they had
15:38 to put the animals to death. But Jesus, Yeshua, shed his blood once and for all, no longer will a sacrifice ever be required again.
15:50 Yeshua is your sacrifice. He is your atonement. And through Him, you've been granted
16:02 forgiveness for your sin, once now and forever. Now let me share something before I close.
16:14 Many of you don't understand this. When God forgives somebody, it's not just that he says, okay, I forgive them, I forgive them. It's not just that God
16:26 is a good guy and forgives everybody. No, there's another part that we need to understand, that God can forgive because his
16:37 requirement for justice against sin has been met because Yeshua died in the place of the sinner. See the Bible teaches that the soul
16:49 that sins, it shall die. Sin separates humanity from God. This is why as soon as Adam and Eve ate from the tree, immediately they were separated from God,
17:01 their covering was lost. In order for a person to be restored into fellowship, their sin has to be atoned for. When you think about someone that's committed the most vicious,
17:13 heinous, defiled sins that you could even imagine, God doesn't just say, okay, it's alright, I forgive them. No, God just doesn't say, it's okay, don't worry about
17:25 it. No, God can forgive because his justice has been met because Jesus died in the place of that sinner, shed his blood,
17:36 therefore God can forgive that sinner only because of Yeshua, because Yeshua died in their place. He that knew no sin, Yeshua of Nazareth, became sin on our behalf that we could
17:48 now become the righteousness of God. So the for you that believe in Yeshua, I want you to put your hand over your heart right now, And just say this, say, Jesus,
18:01 Yeshua, I realize that you were put to death because of my sin. That it wasn't the Romans that crucified
18:13 you. It wasn't even the Pharisees that, that crucified you. But you gave up your own life. It was my sin that crucified you.
18:25 Beloved, you and I, we're the ones that are responsible for putting Jesus to death. It's because of our sin that that spear was thrust into his side, and that he died on that cross, but he did
18:37 it willingly, because he loves you. Because the father sent him, to send his blood, to send his son, to shed his blood, to bring you to himself.
18:50 So we just say right now, Yeshua, thank you for coming to earth and going on to that cross shedding your blood for me, and I receive your love. I receive the
19:02 father's love. I receive your forgiveness. Deliver me from condemnation and accusation that the devil's constantly trying to torment me with. And help me to know
19:13 Yeshua, that because of you, my sins are forgiven and I'm going to heaven. I want you just to put your hand over your heart with me
19:25 once again and say this, my sins Jesus are forgiven and I'm going to heaven because of you.
19:41 And now you're watching this, some of you, and you've never made a commitment to follow Jesus, but God is touching you right now. This is your opportunity
19:53 to invite him into your life to become your master, to become your Lord, and all you have to do is receive him. He's standing at the door of your soul right now, and if you'll
20:05 open up and receive him because you feel the weight of what I'm saying, it's the Holy Spirit that's letting you know that the words that I'm speaking are true. Just open up your heart to him right now and say this if
20:15 you've never done it before. Say, Father God, oh, I thank you for loving me. I feel it. I feel your love and it's touching me. And I
20:27 receive you Jesus. I receive your love in my heart. I receive forgiveness. I receive your blood, and I ask you to
20:39 come and live inside me, forgiving me of all my sin. And by your grace, I make you now my Lord and Master, and I confess you Jesus
20:51 as my Lord. Now if you just said that prayer, I want you to click the find Jesus link. You'll find it attached in the description in this video. We want to help you, we want to get you some information. And to those of
21:02 you that are already in love with Jesus, I want you to know today, your sins are forgiven, and because of him, you and I, we're going to heaven.
21:14 The blood of Messiah Jesus answers every question about the exclusivity of our message that Jesus is the only way to heaven. Messiah's
The Exclusivity of Messiah's Blood
21:26 blood is the only means of atonement that our creator has given us to be reconciled to him and be cleansed and made holy and innocent in his beloved son.
21:38 And during this special season, we should really just understand that the blood of Jesus is the key to our message, and it's the foundation to our faith.
21:50 And it gives us the assurance of going to heaven when we're trusting in his forgiveness. Now, I always at the end of these broadcasts, I put it out there, if anyone would like to support this
22:02 ministry, I thank you. I'm thinking of the woman that went and anointed Jesus' feet with the costly vial of perfume. Maybe you just feel a true, godly, Holy Spirit inspired
22:13 appreciation for your Messiah, and you want to honor him by giving to this ministry. If so, thank you.
