  1. 241Esau's FamilyGenesis 36 gives an account of Esau’s family including his wives Basemath, Adah, and Aholibamath, and his son’s concubine Timna. Adah and Aholibamath were Esau’s first wives who brought grief to his parents. Their names were changed, though, when they married. Basemath was Esau’s third wife who he married out of spite when he realized that his parents didn’t like his other Canaanite wives.   2. 242Judah's WifeSoon after Judah and his brothers sold Joseph into slavery, Judah left home and visited Hirah, an Adullamite. While there, Judah met a Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua, and he married her. The Bible gives us no details about the daughter of Shua other than she was a Canaanite, so Judah should not have married her. Her father’s name, Shua, means wealth. Perhaps Judah was attracted to their riches and wanted to attach himself to the wealthy family. Judah’s Canaanite wife bore him three sons - Er, Onan, and Shelah.   3. 243Tamar the WidowJudah found a wife for his son Er. Her name was Tamar. But soon after their marriage, God killed Er due to his wickedness.So as was the custom, Tamar was given to Judah’s second son, Onan, so that he might pass along Er’s line. But Onan had a problem with that. If he had heirs, he wanted them to be his, not his brother’s, so he made sure that Tamar didn’t get pregnant. She knew when she deceived Judah that she faced being put to death when she was found to be with child. That’s why she took Judah’s signet ring, cord, and staff.   5. 245Potiphar's WifeThe Bible tells us that Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. Because of his good looks and the fact that he spent much time at Potiphar’s house while Potiphar was away, he attracted the attention of Potiphar’s wife. He resisted her efforts to seduce him, but she wasn’t easily dismissed. He explained that his master, her husband, trusted him with all that he had. How could Joseph, then, betray Potiphar’s trust as well as sin against God. She didn’t care. She had it in her mind that she needed him.   6. 246Asenath: Wife of JosephPharaoh gave Joseph a new name and gave him an Egyptian wife, Asenath, daughter of an Egyptian priest. During the years of plenty, Asenath bore Joseph two sons. He named the first Manasseh, saying, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.” (Genesis 41:51 ESV) The name Manasseh means, “causing to forget.” He named the second Ephraim, saying, ““For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.” (v. 52) The name Ephraim means “doubly fruitful.” All God's Women is a daily women's Bible study podcast and internationally syndicated radio show where we journey through the Bible one woman at a time.   7. 247Leah Laid to RestLeah had six sons and a daughter. In her children she witnessed praise and much sorrow. Tucked away in Genesis 49:31, we find a beautiful verse of hope. Jacob’s dying words to his sons were to bury him next to Leah in the cave where Abraham and Sarah, and Isaac and Rebekah were buried. It was an order, but these women were god-fearing women in the business of bringing life, not destroying it. They had a daughter, Miriam, then Jochebed conceived again and bore a son. Pharaoh’s command was that all baby boys be thrown into the river, but when Jochebed saw her beautiful baby boy, she knew she had to try to save him. For three months, she hid him, but the time came when she could no longer keep him hidden.   13. 253Who Were the Daughters of Reuel in the Bible?Reuel welcomed Moses to their home, inviting him to live with them, and then giving Moses his daughter Zipporah as a wife. Though the Bible uses the word priest to describe Reuel, it can also mean a priest-king. He was likely a ruler of the Midianites, a people who came from Abraham and Keturah’s son Midian.   15. 255How Were the Hebrews Affected by the Plagues?Moses returned to Egypt so that he might rescue the Hebrews from Egyptian captivity, but God warned him it wouldn’t be easy. God got the attention of the Pharaoh by having Moses and Aaron send plagues. Though these plagues were directed at Pharaoh, everyone suffered, including the Hebrews. Imagine the women going to the river to gather their water, only, the water is now blood. Not only that, but it’s killed all the fish, so the river banks are piled up with dead, stinky fish. But with the fourth plague, He made a distinction.God sent flies to invade the land and swarm the houses of the Egyptians, but in the land of Goshen where the Hebrews lived, there were no flies.   17. 257How Did the Hebrews Escape Egypt?As God prepared His people to leave Egypt, the plagues grew more severe. Locust, darkness, and finally, death. But in the death, God instituted a new tradition, the Passover.Moses gave the Hebrew people specific instructions in how they were to observe Passover.   19. 259The Story of Miriam Rejoicing in the BibleIn Exodus 15:20, we find that Miriam, a prophetess and the older sister of Moses and Aaron, grabs a timbrel and leads the women in praise and worship with singing, instruments, and dance. This is the first mention of Miriam since she watched over baby Moses in his basket in the Nile, but we see now that not only are her brothers prophets, but she is a prophetess as well. And she’s a natural leader as she led the women in worship, and they all followed her lead. Then they came to Marah, but the water was bitter. The people complained to Moses, asking him what they were supposed to drink. Midway through the second month of their time in the wilderness, they complained again. This time they told Moses they would have been better off staying in Egypt. Then he gave instructions for gifted artisans to make all that the Lord commanded.In Exodus 35:11-19 Moses listed everything the artisans would be making.   24. 264What Does the Bible Say About Women Serving in Tabernacle?“He made the laver of bronze and its base of bronze, from the bronze mirrors of the serving women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.” (Exodus 38:8 NKJV)Though it’s not clear exactly who these women were or what their duties were, we do know that women were serving in some capacity at the tabernacle.
