Learning to Bear Patience 0:06 How many of you would agree that patience is 1 of the most difficult fruits to bear in our life. Amen. I understand. Patience does0:18 not come easily, I don't think, to any of us. I have learned and I have grown a great deal in patience since0:30 going blind. Still I struggle, and still I, there's much more work in this vineyard for God to do. But I remember when I had eyesight,0:43 I hated to even sit at a red light. They drove me batty. And if I got behind a slow driver,0:55 oh my Lord. You remember when downtown changed the roads? You remember when that happened? And I told the Lord, if I see a bicycle1:07 or If I see somebody buy, Let me try that again. Cycling. A bicycle, right? What would you say? How do you say that?1:19 Really? That doesn't sound any better than what I said. Either way, I said, Lord, if I see 1, I'm gonna hit them. I'm gonna run right over them.1:32 Maybe that's why the Lord said you should go blind, I don't know. Oh, I hated to wait. Oh, waiting rooms.1:45 I hate to wait. But what the Lord taught me1:59 where his richest contentment is to be had. And so what I have had to learn, I2:11 can remember those first several months of not being able to drive anymore. I think that was 1 of the things I dreaded the2:23 most, was losing that mobility, that independence to just jump in my car and go. And I remember I was2:36 everyone my family had left and someone from the church was going to come to my home and pick me up to take me to the church office. And I can remember2:47 that I walked outside of my doors, and I stood in my driveway, and I had my backpack on. And I said, god, I2:59 feel like a kid waiting for the bus. I said, god, this is awful. And I'll never forget what the lord told me to do. You're not gonna3:11 believe what he told me to do. The Lord said, I want you to visualize the fruit of the spirit. The Lord said, I want you to get an image in your3:23 mind right now of patience. Visualize it. And I could picture this lush fruit in my hands.3:35 And while I'm standing there with a backpack, feeling silly, feeling insecure, feeling3:47 vulnerable. The Lord said, now take a bite of it. And in my mind's eye, I took a bite of that precious3:59 fruit. And the Lord told me, this is how I commune with you. It's through the fruit of the spirit. The Lord said,4:11 let me produce it in you. From then on, as I would struggle in moments, and I would struggle4:22 in days or seasons or whatever. When I would struggle, I would take a piece of that fruit that God has born and I would just take a4:34 bite. And I don't know, for me, it just settles me down. The fruit of the spirit is 1 of the most difficult for4:46 us to have produced in our lives. Do you find that sometimes it's as though you need patience4:58 with people? Do you find sometimes that it is that you need patience through life's challenges. Well5:10 interestingly enough, did you know that in the New Testament, as we know the New Testament was written in its original language in Greek. Did you know there are 2 Greek words for the word5:22 patience? 1 Greek word, you'll have to Google this and fact check, maybe because I know I will not say it correctly.5:35 Hupamine. Hopamine, hepamine, hepamine is how you pronounce it, I think. That is the Greek word for endurance, for5:47 perseverance, for going through life's challenges and life's trials. That's not giving up. I have a5:58 wonderful friend. I don't know if they are here today. But when I laughed and said that I was going to hit a cyclist, I thought of him. His name is Eric Gollitt.6:11 Many of you know Eric because you've listened to his story and his remarkable testimony. I walked with Eric through a season of suffering that6:22 he went through, where it was a horrific accident that took many, many months to recover from.6:35 And I remember through that time, he and our friendship, it grew so much more deeper then because I was going6:47 through a suffering, he was going through his own suffering of recovering from that accident. And we would encourage 1 another. We have to endure,6:59 we have to go forward, we can't stop. Matter of fact, we read a great book together called You'll Get Through This by Max Lucado. And it helped and administered to both of us.7:13 So there is this idea biblically that, yes, you and I have to endure, we have to persevere, we have to go forward, it's 1 foot7:24 in front of the other, and it requires patience, and that's the biblical word. But there's another word.7:37 Macrothemia. Macrothemia is the word for patience here in Galatians chapter 5 verse 22, and that has to do with patience with people.7:51 Now isn't that remarkable? That you and I as believers, we need both.Christ's Boundless Patience 8:03 About the patience that Jesus had to have had. Not only with people, not only with those who mocked him and made fun of him, not only with8:15 those who arrested him, who beat him, ultimately crucified him, not only patience of those who conspired8:26 against him, but patience with Peter who he knew would deny him. Patience with Thomas who he8:38 knew would doubt him. Patience was Judas, who the very moment8:50 Judas began following Christ, and throughout his entire earthly ministry, Jesus knew that Judas would betray him and yet he9:02 still loved him. I'll tell you right now, if I was Jesus and I knew who Judas was, he wouldn't be on my team.9:21 Have you ever thought about how Jesus9:37 Would it surprise you if I told you today that not only was Christ patient with people, which indeed he was, but would it surprise9:49 you if I told you that Christ is even patient to this very day? How do we know this? Do you remember when10:01 Jesus came as a baby? What does the scripture say? Do you remember how it explains it? It says, at the fullness10:14 of time. Jesus did not come to the earth at a random time of history. He came at an appointed time.10:26 There was a fullness of time. It was appointed by God the father. And when Jesus came, let me tell you,10:38 I can't imagine the patience that it took leading up to that to humble himself and to know that he was gonna put on the form of a servant that is human flesh,10:50 and that he was gonna humble himself as no 1 has ever humbled themselves before. And that he would not count equality11:02 with God a thing to be grasped or a thing to be held on to, but he would come and serve and die for humanity.11:15 So significant is it what Christ has done. And do you know that when we die and we go to heaven, do you know it is not our bodies that's in11:26 heaven, it's our spirit that's in heaven. But have you ever thought about this? There isn't but11:38 1 flesh and bone in heaven. And do you know who it is? The Lord Jesus Christ.11:50 And have you ever thought about this? 1 day, during the great resurrection, the Bible teaches, we who are born again, we will be raised from the dead12:03 and our spirit that is in heaven Why? To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. And 1 day,12:14 our spirit will be reunited not to this lowly flesh, but to a new glorified body. Amen.12:28 And while there will be no disease and there'll be no sufferings and there'll be no amputations, there'll be nothing12:40 missing, nothing lacking. As that wonderful song says, Jesus is the only 1 with scars12:52 in heaven. And for these last 2000 years, the scars of the crucifixion13:04 have remained in the body of Jesus. What a sacrifice. What would you say13:16 if I told you that to this very day, Jesus is patient. How do I know that? Because the Bible says, if you remember, the last supper before he13:28 was to suffer that terrible and that agonizing, that brutal death. He tells his disciples at the last supper, I will not13:39 partake of the vine until I am with you again in the kingdom. You know what that means? Brothers,13:51 sisters, that means the marriage supper of the lamb. And until you and I are with Jesus, until the fullness of the body of Christ from14:03 generation to generation is together at the marriage supper of the lamb. Jesus is waiting for that moment.14:17 I know he's patient because the Bible teaches that he is waiting for God to make his enemies his footstool. Jesus is waiting for14:28 that. I know that he's patient because God Jesus is waiting for the fullness of his kingdom to come. It's still being14:40 built. It's still being expanded. You and I are part of that work, but 1 day it's going to be at its fullness. See, you realize the14:52 church is not forever. The church is from the day of Pentecost to the coming of the Lord, that's it. But God's kingdom is forever and15:04 ever and ever. That's why Jesus did not pray, my church come and my will be done. He said, thy kingdom come15:16 and my will be done. The kingdom is forever. What a thing. I know God is patient15:28 because the Bible says in Peter that he is patient toward us word. Think about that. Have Have you ever thought about God's patience toward you?15:40 He's patient toward usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, the scripture says. Oh, we serve a very patient,15:53 very patient God. So as we have said throughout this series thus far, the fruit of the Spirit, I believe in reality, is the personality of God.16:05 And what's personality? Personality is your character made visible. That's what it is. Your personality is your character made16:17 visible. And when you want to see God, here is what you see, love, joy, peace, patience.16:30 Is that what is seen in our lives? I have a long way to go in patience. But I want God to develop it in16:42 me. Go toPatience in Relationships 16:59 short scriptures that I want to bring to your attention. 2 is in regarding to patients with people. 2 is in regarding to patients in trials.17:14 Ephesians chapter 4 verse 2. Somebody give me a head start on this. Remind me of the first With all humility and gentleness. It's all humility and gentleness.17:27 With patience. With patience. And what's the rest of it? I love this verse so much. With17:40 with all humility. Now say amen if you're with me right here. Amen. You know, you can't go very far with the Lord17:54 without getting some humility in you. You're not gonna go far. And see, some some of you, precious brothers and sisters, some of you don't18:05 realize why18:22 And that confuses us. When I first started this church, I never dreamed. I never imagined that it would be18:34 the uphill climb that it was. I thought if you build it, they will come.18:50 In any church, any church that I had ever been, and there were And there were And there were And there were And there were And there were19:06 So I just thought of this church that wherever we were we would open doors and like all other churches. And people19:18 would just come. That was not the case. That was not the case. And I look back now, and I look back now,19:31 and I see lessons that there was no other way to learn except God giving me some big doses of humility.19:44 And amen for it. Amen? Yes. I remember in those early days, I was walking to my car 1 day, and I felt the19:55 Holy Spirit inside me. Oh. I felt the I was I was let me think. I bet I was 22.20:08 I knew I'd grieve the holy spirit. All I did was walk to my car. I didn't say anything. I wasn't thinking anything. And I had grieved,20:20 God, and it grooved me. And I said, Lord, and the Lord said,20:33 I don't like how you're walking. How am I walking? He said pridefully. You're strutting. Change the20:45 way you walk. Humility with gentleness. Oh, we're gonna have a whole20:57 Sunday just on gentleness, and that's gonna be deep.21:09 Patience with people. And how are we to be patient with people? Oh, you're not gonna like this. I don't like it. Bearing21:21 with 1 another. Accepting 1 another. Are you kidding me, Paul? See, this is what I21:33 meant earlier when I said that as Christians, we just think everything is automatic. It's not. When you just think that Christian unity is automatic,21:46 when you just think that Christian love and and fellowship and everyone getting along, would that just not be built in and automatic? Well,21:58 guess what? It's not. Have you ever been around somebody that just gets on your nerves? Their personality is22:10 completely different than yours, and they just rub you the wrong way. Some of you go, yeah, I'm married to it. No. Don't. We'll do counseling later. Don't22:22 worry about that. You're not going to get along with everyone. You're not going to like everyone.22:34 You're not going to agree with everyone. Warren Wiersbe, who's in heaven with the Lord today, said it so well. He said, 1 of the hardest lessons he22:46 ever had to learn is that God blesses people he disagrees with. How dare God to bless people that I disagree22:58 with? Aren't we silly sometimes? But do you know sometimes what you and I have to do?23:10 It's weird to bear with 1 another. We have to accept 1 another. What's that mean? That means I have to accept that they don't see things the way that I see it, and it's not the end of the world.23:22 I have to accept that not only do they have flaws, I have flaws. We're all flawed. Let's get over it. Amen? We have to accept.23:34 And how do you do all of this? It tells us, the end of verse 2, in love. You accept 1 another, you bear with 1 another in love, but if you don't23:46 have this macrothemia in place first, if you don't have this patience, if you're not allowing the Holy Spirit to supernaturally23:58 produce in you the patience of God, you're gonna fail in many of the relationships that God would have for you. You're gonna miss24:10 the joy of serving with others. You're gonna miss the joy of walking with others in love because you can't get along with nobody. There are some of you,24:22 and I say this respectfully and I say it pastorally, but I want to say it plainly. There are some of you you can't get along with nobody. And24:34 that's why when you look back, you look back and you go, I used to be friends with so and so, and I used to be friends with so and so. I used to be close with so and so, and I used to be close with so24:46 and so, and I used to be friends with Did and I used to be and I used to be and I used to be and I used to be and I used to be24:58 and I used to be and I used to be and and turns out he had a broke finger. Some of you are just like that. Everybody's the problem.25:11 No it ain't, guess who the problem is? It might25:23 be that if you allow the Lord to produce macrothemia in you, if you allow the Lord to produce25:35 patience in you, then you would begin to bear, you would begin to accept even the flaws, and even the faults and even the shortcomings25:46 of other people, and you would begin to love them the way God loves you. And it might be25:58 that God's will is for you to have the richest friendships, the richest,26:11 godliest friendships that you've ever known in your life, but you're missing it because you're not producing patience.26:23 Go to Colossians chapter 3 verse 12. Colossians chapter 3 verse 12.26:36 It says, put on then as God's chosen compassionate hearts. This is a bit lengthier of a verse. It talks once again26:48 about humility. Doesn't it seem as though biblically humility and patience seem to always go together? Why? Because26:59 you're not gonna be willing to gain patience without humility. Have this air about27:11 you that God owes me everything and everyone else owes me something, well, brother, sister, you're never gonna walk in patience. You're gonna walk27:23 in pride. So you have to humble yourself. You have to let humility be that starting point of gaining the great gain of27:35 patience. So put on then as God's chosen people, clothe yourselves with humility27:47 and with what? What is that? That is patience with people.28:00 And you know sometimes brothers and sisters, sometimes the reality is people are going to disappoint you, and they're going to hurt you, they're going to let you down. That's28:12 where the rubber is going to meet the road. Are you patient with them? I think it's hardest for us to have patience with those who we love the28:24 most. It's hardest for us to often, and let's just touch on this before we move forward. It's hardest to28:36 have patience with our spouse, with our children, those who we live with, those who we care the most for. That's why our28:48 patience seems to be lacking the most. But you know, it really ought to be the place where the most precious fruit is born. Isn't it so easy29:00 to look at our spouse29:17 Love is not irritable. Oh, that's I don't like that 1. If I were the editor of the Bible, that would not have made it.29:32 It's not irritable. It's not arrogant. It's not rude. And it keeps no record of wrong. So why do we do that with our29:44 spouse? No. You know what patience would do in us if we would bear that godly fruit of patience? It would help us see29:56 those wonderful qualities about our spouse. It would help us to see God's plans and purposes for our children. It would help us see how30:08 wonderful of a life God really has given us, amen. And the blessings He's truly given us. Patience will30:20 change your entire perspective. Walk in humility, clothe yourselves in it so that you may bear this precious fruit. So whether whether it's someone you30:32 love deeply, whether it's someone you live with, whether it's someone you work with, whether it's someone in your friend group, whether it's someone you do church life with, whatever sphere30:44 of people you deal with, Be patient with them. You know what's remarkable about a fruit30:56 tree? If you've ever thought about this, a fruit tree never eats of its own fruit. What does it do? It31:07 shares it, it gives it away. Do you know why God produces patience in you? Is so that you can31:19 give it and share it. So the next time that someone just tries your patience, The next 1,31:31 you know, you know, this this macro themia means to be long temperament. It means long suffering. It, it, it, this, it means that you It means that you and you31:43 can31:59 just share it with you. So that's the reason why he's bearing it. Can we say amen to that? Then lastly, there's patience in suffering, patience in trials, patience in challenges.Show more In this video 0:00 Learning to Bear Patience8:03 Christ's Boundless Patience16:59 Patience in Relationships32:06 Enduring Trials with Patience
