Christ the Chief Cornerstone 0:06 Let's go to Psalm chapter one eighteen, verse twenty two this morning. We're in week two of a very short series called Built to Last,0:18 From Dead Rocks to Living Stones. Last Sunday, we called it the Rock Quarry of Sin. We saw how Christ came to0:30 this earth and how he has hewed out for himself rocks, dead with no life in them whatsoever.0:42 But he's now made us living stones. And he's building the church through us. Well, today, I want us to look at the scripture of where Christ is the chief cornerstone.0:54 I wanna talk about what it means to align our life to the cornerstone, what it means to have a foundation underneath you that nothing in life can shake.1:07 I wanna show you how to have confidence in who God is and what he says and what he called you to. Psalm one eighteen1:19 verse twenty two was actually quoted by Christ three times In all three synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and... Not John. Sorry. I1:31 say it out of habit. Matthew, Mark, and Luke. It's a pivotal verse in the Bible. All throughout scripture, Christ is1:43 referred to as a rock. When Moses, instead of speaking to the rock, when he hit the rock and the river of water flowed1:54 out, that was symbolic of Christ and how he would be smitten. First Corinthians ten:four teaches that that symbolized the2:06 Lord Jesus Christ. When Daniel interpreted the dream of King Nebuchadnezzar, and he saw this large statue that represented all of the empires of the world,2:19 beginning with a golden head, and a rock that came out of nowhere that no human hands had made, came and smashed the statue2:31 symbolizing the crushing of world empires. That rock was Christ, and it grew into a mountain, the kingdom of God.2:44 Even Jesus teaches that we are either building our lives upon a solid rock or we are building upon sinking sand.2:57 And the reality of what Christ was teaching in Matthew seven has to do with the final judgment. When you and I end our lives and we stand before God, our lives are either3:09 gonna be built on the rock or sinking, shifting sand. It's a metaphor all3:20 throughout the scriptures, both Old and New Testaments. And in Psalm one eighteen, this is a messianic prophecy. In verse twenty two it3:32 says, the stone, we know the stone is the Lord Jesus Christ that the builders rejected.3:44 Today, if you suffer from rejection, let me say this carefully, but let me say it clearly.3:57 There are many people who do not understand why they have destructive patterns in their life. Many people don't understand why they have destructive4:08 behaviors that dog them, can't break them. Many people have behaviors that they don't understand where it sources from,4:21 where it comes from. Brothers, sisters, many of those issues is a root of rejection that so many people face.4:33 Your rejection may have come from your earliest childhood. There's some rejection that even comes from a womb when a mother didn't want the child.4:46 There are deep seated roots of rejection that many people face. It may come through teenage years. It may come through a failed marriage. It may come through4:58 friends that betrayed you or walked out on you. Either way, there are many, many, many different forms of rejection. A5:20 He understands that. And today, if God shows you, or perhaps throughout this twenty one days of prayer and fasting, if God shows you that one of your struggles in life has been a root of rejection, I am here to tell youHealing from the Root of Rejection 5:31 the Lord Jesus Christ can We have prayer5:42 team people. We have prayer team people right here, who after the service, they have bright red,5:54 yet lanyards. I say that in faith, because I can't see it. I'm told they have red lanyards ready6:06 to agree with you, ready to pray over you, ready to help you. Let me tell you, friends, Jesus understands rejection. He came, John one twelve, to his6:18 own, and his own received him not. But then what does it say? But to as many as did receive him,6:30 to them gave... He gave them the power. Do you know what that Greek word for power is? It means legal right. It means legal authority6:42 and right. That means you have the right to be called the child of God. What a remarkable thing.6:56 Next week in first Peter four, two, four, and five, we're gonna go into how because Christ was rejected, we're we're gonna deep dive the Greek, and we're gonna deep dive that text7:08 of what it really means when you accept Jesus, when the builders rejected Jesus. And it makes you, because you7:20 accepted the stone that the builders rejected. It makes you the living stones of Jesus Christ. Amen? But that's for next7:31 week. This week, I want us to understand what does it mean, the stone that the builders rejectedThis Is the Day the Lord Has Made 7:44 has become the cornerstone? Verse twenty three, this is a marvelous thing in our eyes. Verse twenty four, this is7:56 the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. Do you remember what Jesus said of Abraham in the gospels?8:09 Jesus said Abraham saw my day and rejoiced. And he told the Pharisees, the builders that rejected the stone, he said, if you had seen8:21 your hour of visitation, you wouldn't have missed it. But they missed it because they rejected the stone.8:34 God told Abraham to journey with Isaac to sacrifice his son, and he said go until you see the place that I will show you. And what did he see? He saw,8:46 I believe, Calvary, Golgotha. And Jesus said, Abraham saw my day and8:58 rejoiced. This is the day that the Lord has made. Chad, what does that mean? It means today is the day of salvation. Don't live any other way.9:10 It's the day of salvation if you accept Jesus, the stone. If you're gonna take notes, I9:22 want you to write down just two simple things that I want to leave you with today, things that are shaping my perspective, things that I've thought deeply over this9:34 weekend and I've rejoiced over. Number one, because Jesus is the stone, I want you to write this down. Only the stone of ChristOnly Christ Can Handle the Weight of Our Lives 9:45 Jesus can handle the weight of our lives. Nothing else. Everything else is is sinking sand. I was listening9:57 this morning. Anybody know that song, Christ the Solid Rock? My hope is built on nothing less. You know10:09 that? Yes. Than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame,10:22 but wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ the solid rock I stand,10:34 all other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand.10:46 That song was written two hundred years ago. A man named Edwin... Edward Mote. Edward grew up not knowing the Lord.10:58 He grew up in London, England, born in the late seventeen hundreds. He wrote it in eighteen thirty four. And do you know how Edward grew up? His family, his11:10 parents owned and operated a pub in London. And he was a teenager before he ever knew of the Lord Jesus Christ. And he was saved, and he was11:22 rescued. And do you know years and years later, his father that owned the pub was gloriously saved and became a deacon in Edwards church.11:34 Amen. The church Edward pastored. And what a gift he gave to the body of Christ, that now, two hundred years later, we're still singing11:46 that wonderful song. Can we say amen to it? Only Christ can handle the weight of our life.11:58 So if you are putting your hope, if you're putting your confidence, if you're putting your joy in other people, you've got it in sinking sand.12:09 If you have your hope and confidence that things are just gonna work out good, or you're you you you just hope that everything is just gonna be okay.12:22 You know what that's called? Wishful thinking. That's not faith. God taught me faith is not hoping for the right outcome. Faith is saying,12:34 God, you are my outcome. And whatever the outcome is, you love me, and I love you, and I trust you. Amen? That's what faith is. And when your12:46 faith is in Christ, the solid rock, you know what that means? God can handle any weight that is on you today. Any any weight. Any fear, any dread,12:58 any anxiety, any dysfunction, any trauma, any sorrow, any trial, any hurt, Christ can handle every bit of it.13:10 This is why the psalmist said, when I am overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. It's Christ. The stone13:23 has become the cornerstone. Wow. He can handle any weight, any fear, any problem. He can handle it. This is13:35 why the Bible says, casting all your cares upon him, because he cares for you, brother, sister. That means you don't have to carry it. He can handle it.13:47 So maybe for the first time, in whatever you're facing, in whatever you're going through, maybe for the first time today, you'll let go of it. And you'll experience13:59 the rest that Christ has for you, because your feet is standing on solid ground today. Can we say amen to it? And then lastly today,14:12 this cornerstone. You know, the purpose of a cornerstone is that it would line up the rest of the building. You get the cornerstone wrong, and nothing will be right. Friends, I14:24 want you to write this down if you're taking notes. Christ is not an addition to your life. He should be the foundation.14:37 Some of us are living, walking out our Christian life today as though Christ is simply an add on to our life. Just an add on.Align Your Life to Christ the Foundation 14:49 Just an addition. No, my friends, if he's not the foundation, if he's not what you're aligned to, then nothing's going to be right in15:01 your life. And I wanna say this. The church is not the cornerstone. Christ is the cornerstone. So don't15:13 align yourself simply with the church. Align yourself with Christ. I I am so thankful for everybody that15:25 calls this church home. I'm thankful for that. Now there's some people that confuse me. When I had eyesight, I remember I went to AutoZone one day to pick up something, a15:36 battery, something like that. And I am standing at the counter getting ready to check out, and there's a woman on my right, and I know her. I've seen her. She she, she, used to go to my church,15:48 but I hadn't seen her in, like, two years. And I get ready to say something to her, and, I had a hat on. Maybe she didn't recognize me. I don't know. And she's standing right here16:00 to my right. And before I could even say hi to her, the person ringing her up says, where do you go to church? And she said, oh, I go to Preaching Christ Church. And I hadn't seen her in two16:12 years. I thought, wow. Okay.16:24 I'm glad when people love their church, but the church is not the cornerstone. Christ is. Several years ago, remember16:36 those t shirts were real popular, said, I love my church. You remember those? We did a t shirt. The Lord showed it to me. I'm blind, but I could see it. The Lord showed it to me. We did a t shirt that16:47 says, I love my church, and church was scratched out, and underneath it said, the gospel. I love the gospel. Friends, our16:59 hope is in Christ. The church will let you down. The church will disappoint you. The church will fail you. But Christ will not. Align17:11 your life to him. Is your marriage aligned today? Maybe your marriage is way out of alignment. Maybe that's why you're having the troubles you are.17:25 Is your attitude set to the cornerstone? Or is your attitude getting in your way? Tripping you up?17:42 I know that if you're like me today, I need to be realigned. I need to be realigned. And, you know, that's the word17:54 that God has given for our church this summer is realignment. There's a realignment happening, and that's from our leadership to our vision.18:08 It's all of it. And that's part of this twenty one days of prayer that God would realign us to his agenda, realign us to his heart, realign us to his will. That's18:20 what all of this is about. So this is an opportunity, church, for you to recognize Christ as your cornerstone and say, I'm gonna build upon him.18:32 I'm gonna build upon Christ. Not other people's expectations, not other people's approval, not other people's opinions, not even my expectations, but Christ18:44 and Christ alone.18:56 Alone. In this video 0:00 Christ the Chief Cornerstone5:29 Healing from the Root of Rejection7:37 This Is the Day the Lord Has Made9:40 Only Christ Can Handle the Weight of Our Lives14:49 Align Your Life to Christ the Foundation
