Weddings can be a time of great joy and love for everyone involved. Despite causing an abundance of stress and anxiety while you’re planning them, when the big day arrives, all of that will fade away.

As Christians, it’s important to have a ceremony that puts our faith front and center. This often means having the wedding in a church, getting a religious officiant, and incorporating prayers into the ceremony.

In this article, we’ll show you four prayers and blessings that you can use on your wedding day.

Marriage in the Bible

The Bible mostly focuses on God's relationship with His people and how Jesus Christ's death gave us eternal life. But its teachings cover a wide variety of topics, and it can provide us with useful information about Christian marriage.

The most important aspect of marriage is friendship.

The Biblical phrase “a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18) is often misunderstood. It actually indicates the kind of friendship God intends for spouses to have. Let’s take a closer look at the meaning of the words surrounding marriage in the Bible so that we can better understand God’s intended meaning of this phrase.

The word “nisuin” is the most common word used today in Hebrew for a wedding and marriage and is also found in the Hebrew Bible. Saying, ‘he got married’ is ‘nasa ee•sha,’ or literally, ‘married a woman’ or ‘married a wife.’

The Bible’s interpretation of marriage carries the idea that both parties are complementary to each other, and it doesn’t imply inferiority like we sometimes assume. In the Book of Hosea in the Hebrew Bible, God uses this word in relation to His relationship with Israel.

Hosea 13:9 says, “He destroys you, O Israel, for you are against me, against your helper.”

God is described in this passage as "Israel's helper." The helper is not inferior to the one who receives assistance. That’s not the intended message. On the contrary, the passage implies an intimate relationship between God and Israel.

Just as Eve was the helper that perfectly matched Adam's need as a human being, so is God the one who perfectly matches our needs as humans.

When God refers to a wife as a “helper” to her husband, this does not imply inferiority — instead, it implies a perfect match and a wonderful friendship, which is what God intends for married couples.

Wedding prayers for newlyweds

A wedding prayer may be a good addition to your wedding ceremony if adding religious or cultural elements is important to you. Your wedding prayer can add a touch of spirituality to your ceremony and show respect for your faith. It can be given either by your officiant, family member, or a guest of honor.

Listed below are four Christian wedding prayers you can use at your wedding.

Wedding opening prayer

Thank you, dear God, for marriage and all the joy, love, and happiness that it brings us. You are our God, and we appreciate you bringing together this beautiful couple on this special day.

Through our prayer, may this couple receive your rich blessings as they exchange their vows and wedding rings, and may they walk hand in hand from this day forward into everything that they have been destined to achieve. Having offered ourselves to you now in adoration, we welcome your Holy Spirit among us. Amen.

Wedding day prayer

Gracious God, behold, the family and friends assembled here to join these two people in marriage. We thank you for this place where we gather, for the love that unites these two people, for the peace given to us this day, for the hope we receive each day, and for all that make our lives delightful.

O God, watch over them in everything they do and as they start to build a life together. Amen.

Wedding blessings prayer

May God’s light shine today upon you two, and may you live your new lives in God’s presence.

Let the Holy Spirit fill you with love and joy as the blessed sunshine shines like a fire on you both. May you let the love you two have for each other shine from your eyes like the candle in a window, beckoning a wanderer through the storm. Let the rain beat on your Spirit and wash it clean, and may it leave there a shining pool where the light of Heaven shines.

May you be blessed by the Earth, may it be soft under your feet as you pass along the roads together, may it be gentle under you when you lie out on it at the end of a day, and may it rest easy over you when you lie out beneath it.

I pray that it rests so lightly on both your shoulders that your souls are taken up quickly and on their way to God. Blessings and peace to you both in your journey. Amen.

Blessing for a happy marriage

We wish you and your husband many years of happiness together. May your marriage provide joy to one another and blessings to your family. I hope your hearts and homes are filled with love and laughter for the rest of your lives.

As you face every challenge together, may you know that God's grace will help you overcome any obstacles along the way. We wish you the best of luck in your future together, and may the world prosper because you fell in love. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

As we see a loving marriage, we see the Heavenly Father's deep personal love for us.

Often, we hear the phrase "till death do us part" at weddings, which is meant as a symbol of commitment and the value of each day spent together.

However, the love of Jesus will never end. Through birth and death, as we live messy lives, and even in our eternal glory, he loves us.
