  1. 49Better Than Miracles1 Corinthians 13 is a very famous passage, but in the context of the entire book of 1 Corinthians, we see that it is a sober warning against straying from the Gospel. If a person is gifted, as many of the Corinthians were, then it is frighteningly easy for that person to mistake their spiritual gifts for spiritual fruit. When we serve others in the church, are we serving Jesus or are we serving ourselves? To understand this passage fully, you have to understand 1) The story behind it; 2) The bombshell Paul is dropping on the Corinthians; and 3) How it applies to people today. 15. 63Our Ransom (Part 2)We often hear it stated that Jesus offers redemption to those who believe in him. But why do we need to be redeemed in this first place—and why is Jesus the only one who could do it? The truth is that we have all violated God’s Law and need to be saved. Still, many of us are left with more questions. Is what I’ve done really that bad? Why can’t I earn my own redemption? Why couldn’t God simply choose to forgive us without sending Jesus to the cross? The Bible offers us answers in the true meaning of the word “Redeemer.” Let’s look at how 1) we are in bondage and have a ransom that must be paid, and 2) Jesus Christ had to die to pay it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 17, 1992. Series: Salvation From the Outside In. Scripture: Ephesians 1:6-8. 16. 64Our Ransom, Redeemed by Blood (Part 3)Forgiveness isn’t something that can just be given for free; it always has a cost. When we commit an offense against someone and they forgive us, they pay the price of the time, money, or reputation we took from them. Ephesians tells us our sins against God, too, come with a real cost that only Jesus could pay—and that understanding this can truly transform our lives. Let’s look at how 1) no sin can be forgiven without someone absorbing the cost, 2) why Jesus’s crucifixion was the necessary answer for us breaking God’s Law, and 3) how our lives can be radically changed by this grace. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 31, 1992. Series: Salvation From the Outside In. Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-8. 18. 66Adoption (Part 1)God moved heaven and earth to be our Father. Rather than just forgiving our sins through Jesus Christ, he invites us to sit at the family table with him as his very own sons and daughters. All too often, we live and act as slaves instead of cherished children, blown about by the emotional highs and lows of our circumstances and defensive about our standing in life. But the truth is that our adoption grants us a wonderful security in Jesus that we can call upon daily. Let’s look at 1) how God’s adoption of us is far more radical than it seems, and 2) how we can rest secure as sons instead of slaves. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on June 14, 1992. Series: Salvation From the Outside In. Scripture: Ephesians 1:4-8. 19. 67Adoption (Part 2)The highest thing that Christianity offers to us is to be adopted as God’s sons. It’s little surprise, then, that our identity as his children can radically transform how we live each and every day. When we look at the great privileges and characteristics of people who know they’re children of God, what do we see? Let’s walk through five marks of sonship: 1) a fearlessness about our security, 2) access to the Father through prayer, 3) acknowledging our wealthiness in our inheritance and future glory, 4) handling suffering and discipline with grace, and 5) having complete assurance of his love.
