Every Believer's Calling to Ministry 0:00 Every believer, no matter how young you are, has a shape. You can hear his voice. We are not just praying thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. It's some kind of,0:12 prayer that, you know, we pray at bedtime. And only 1 percent of the church in America are full time. Most pastors are by vocational like myself.0:23 Welcome. Today on Unfiltered, we're talking about calling, specifically the call to plant and build healthy spirit empowered churches. This fall, Harvest Rock Church in conjunction with Harvest0:35 International Ministries is kicking off its 9 month church planting school designed to equip and form men and women who have a heart for church planting, ministry, leadership,0:47 and advancing the kingdom. And today, to help us understand all of this, we have pastor Che with us. So let's start with the most important question, pastor Che. Welcome. Pastor0:58 Che, how does someone know if God is actually calling them to plant a church?1:04 Well, I think it's important to know that everyone is called by God to service. That's why Paul says in Ephesians chapter 1 that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, that would you will know the hope of1:16 your calling. And that's in, verse, 18 of Ephesians chapter 1 17, 18, and 19 are very important. The, thing that we need to understand1:28 is that from a biblical perspective, everyone is a king and a priest. We're all ministers, in other words. I think, the reformation in 15 17 restored the truth, a priesthood1:40 of all believers. Now if they had that in theory, but, unfortunately, they didn't really practice that because you still had the platonic, separation of clergy versus
1:51 laity. But 1 thing that god's been restoring, in this current move of the holy spirit. And I would say, really, since the eighties, that he's been restoring apostles and prophets to
2:03 teach that we're to equip the saints for the work of ministry. So the Bible says in Revelation 1 6, we're all kings and priests. It says the same thing in Revelation 5 10. And I like
2:15 the way it says in 1st Peter 2 9, that you are a royal priesthood. And so combining being a king, royalty, and being a minister, a priest. And so we are all
2:27 called. Now what causes us to stumble is that we know that only a small percentage and according to George Barna, only 1 percent of the church is in vocational full time
2:39 ministry. And so we think, well, because I'm in the marketplace, I'm not called, and that is a fallacy. We have to go with what the word of god says that we're all called, number 1. Number 2,
2:51 we're all called to minister. We're all ministers. We're all disciples, and we are under the great commission of making disciples of all nation. That's not relegated to the 1 percent who are in full time
3:02 ministry. As kings and priests, we're to do our part. Now, albeit, it may be different. It will look different than someone's vocational full time ministry, but you're called. And what we're trying to do is get people
3:14 who are in the marketplace to enroll in this school because 1 of the things that I really, need to emphasize that Paul was by vocational. Paul was a tent maker.
3:26 And, he says in his farewell address in acts chapter 20, he said, you know that my hands provided for all my needs. But not only did it provide for his needs, I think Paul set the example in giving
3:38 because in that passage in Acts 20, he goes into, verse, 35, is more blessed to give than to receive, and he was talking about himself. And it so
3:50 happens, that the lord has led me this way that even though I've been a vocational pastor for 47 years, that god has called me also into the marketplace in 2010. Mama
4:02 Sue and I had, started a business called Joseph Storehouse. And by God's grace, we're making more money through and, again, it's it's a business with my royalties of my,
4:14 now 20 book. My 20th book is just coming out, that we really, wanna encourage people to get. It's called new beginnings. And, basically, it's the gospel, the full gospel of the kingdom being
4:25 presented in that little booklet. And, we wanna give these folks out for free to really, disciple the new converts and, and those who are
4:37 pre Christians. Anyway, the royalties go to, Joseph Storehouse as well as honorariums, but we invested in real estate. We invested with, Tony Amoradio,
4:49 our marketplace, apostle who manages our funds, and God has extraordinarily blessed us. And why why am I saying that? Because I feel that we are leading the way as
5:01 pastors in giving. And so we're looking for pastors who, you know, they're they're not gonna be struggling as they're playing their church. They're able to, find a job. They may have their own
5:13 business. They're able to financially do well and not be distracted by finances because they're taken care of as they build the church. And so it's a new paradigm of church planning because a lot of
5:25 times we think we have to be full time. But, again, only 1 percent of the church in America are full time. Most pastors are bivocational like myself. My dad
5:37 was a Southern Baptist pastor, but he was also a dental technician. He had on dental laboratory. And my mom managed that business for him, and it it it was very, very successful.
5:49 Then my parents bought a restaurant. It was an American restaurant, but they had a daily special Korean food, and people are lined up outside without hyperbole, lined up to get into that restaurant.
6:01 And with that money, they bought houses in the DC area, and they set an example for me. Again, it was not my dad, but it was my mom with that entrepreneur, marketplace
6:13 anointing, but she got it from my grandfather who was 1 of the wealthiest in South Korea. So I really believe there's there's a new paradigm, new way of planning churches, and we wanna get people
6:25 who now there'll be some who'll be full time, and the church will support them and all that. And so if you feel you're called to be full time, that's great. But we're looking for people who feel a call to make a
6:36 difference in this generation. So the big question then is how do I know I'm called to this specific task? And I like to address that, but you may have some other questions.
6:46 Oh, absolutely, pastor Che. I mean, this is great information. I think yeah. You're speaking to, you know, the calling is not just the 1 percent, but to all of us. Right? And so I think there are 2
6:59 questions that would be significant to answer. 1 is, can someone's gifting take them somewhere where their character isn't prepared to sustain that? And then 2, what needs to really
7:10 happen inside the leader before they're ready to build a healthy church, or, you know, get involved in this church planting?
7:18 Well, that's a great question. And, of course, the Bible says, that many of you who are considered becoming a teacher, really consider
7:30 it twice because you will incur a stricter judgment. That's in, 1st Timothy. And, what he's talking about is basically that as
7:42 pastors, we have to have a higher level of character. We have to be above reproach. And that's and, again, 1st Timothy chapter 3, that whoever desires to be a pastor,
7:54 elder, or church planter desires to go things. And then he begins to enumerate the qualification of a pastor, and he has to be above reproach. He has to be above any kind of
8:06 accusations of, impropriety. They have to be impeccable, not perfect, but above reproach when it comes to character, finances, morals.
8:18 And so for example, character does matter for every believer. 1st of all, we're all to be Christ like and we all and god is at work within us both to want to work for his good pleasure. And what that
8:30 means is Romans 8 29 that we have been predestined to be conformed into the image of Jesus. So, yes, if you're a believer, your life is your message.
8:42 Your life is your witness. If, you're, saying 1 thing by living a different life, that's what Jesus called to the sad, Sadducees and the Pharisees in Matthew chapter
8:54 23. He said something very interesting. They sit at the seat of Moses. So definitely listen to what they're teaching because they are teaching the word of God. But don't
9:06 do what they're doing because they're hypocrites. They're teaching 1 thing by living a different life. And that's why he really rebukes the Pharisees and Sadducees, not because their message was
9:18 off. They were teaching the word, but they were hypocrites. They weren't doing the work. And so that's where we have to make sure that we prepare people to, be people of
9:30 integrity. Integrity is what you're like when no one's watching you. How are you the same that you are in public? And that's why Jesus spent 3 years with the
9:42 disciples. I believe he's primarily helping them to mature and become Christ like. That's why he said, follow me. And what he meant by following me, Paul says
9:54 this 5 times. He said, imitate me, as I follow Jesus or follow me as I follow Jesus. And he gave us the key. They said over and over again, you gotta deny yourself,
10:06 take up the cross, and follow me. And to deny yourself again is the biggest thing that gets in the way for us is our flesh. It's our flesh. Now, when you're
10:18 born again, you have a brand new spirit and, god dwells within you as Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 2 that Jesus is in your heart now and he's given you a new spirit.
10:30 This is all prophesied in Ezekiel chapter 36 24. I'm gonna remove the heart of stone, replace it with the heart of flesh, and then it says specifically, I'll put my spirit inside you. And
10:42 that's what it means to be born again. We're a new creation in Christ. Oh, but but the thing is the the new creation is your heart. It's not your body. It's not your mind. Your body and mind have been
10:53 given to sin and to the flesh all your life up to your conversion. And now what he says is that you have to crucify your flesh all of your body as a living and holy sacrifice,
11:05 which is your reasonable service of worship. This is in Romans chapter 12 verse 1. And then he said, be transformed by the renewing of your mind in verse 2. So you can know the perfect
11:18 acceptable will of God. And so this will even help you in deciding whether this goal is for you. And so we are committed. If anyone knows me, to me, is always
11:29 character of Christ before charisma. It is always humility before, you know, any, kind of promotion. It is, to me, it it's it's
11:41 loving well. It's loving. God. I mean, think about all the commandments in the Old Testament, when the teacher of the law came up to Jesus in Matthew 22 and said, which
11:53 of all the commandments is the greatest commandment? And Jesus answered that man's question. And in verse 37, he said, you shall love the lord your god with all your heart, mind, and soul.
Character Above Charisma
12:05 Now mark that strength, but it means your whole being.
12:09 Yeah.
12:09 And he said, this is a 1st and greatest commandment. So he answers that. That is the greatest. If you love God, then he says the 2nd is like it. Love your neighbor as
12:21 yourself. But the greatest is loving god is loving Jesus with all your being and then that translate into loving your neighbor as yourself and then he says, all the law, all the commandments
12:33 in my Bible, in my word, and by the way, we're to, disciple nation, teaching them to obey everything I've commanded you. That's part of the great commission. So the commandments don't go away, but he gives us now
12:44 grace to do it. And when we talk about the commandments, we're not talking about obeying the law to get saved. We're saved by grace through faith. But once you're saved, he expects you to obey the
12:56 commandments. That's why he says that, this is important in Jeremiah 31. I will put my law in your heart, a new covenant I'm gonna make. I'm gonna give you my spirit so that you can obey it.
13:08 And so there's no excuse because it was impossible to obey in the old covenant because they didn't have Jesus in their heart, and they didn't have the spirit of God. And but it was also for the purpose of bringing
13:20 conviction to show people how they fall short of God's glory and that our righteousness is nothing but filthy rags. Our best that we can do, we can't even come close to god's
13:31 standard of holiness, but now there's no excuse. He's given us his spirit. We're now declared righteous. We're declared holy, right with god, and he's given us his spirit to now to obey the
13:43 word of god and that is what it means to deny yourself, take up the cross, assign to what you want, what you think, what you feel, and what does god want? What is his will? And I wanna
13:55 obey his will. We are not just praying thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. It's in some kind of, prayer that, you know, we pray at bedtime. No. This is what
14:07 we're saying is that the kingdom, which is God's supernatural rule and reign, take place his lordship, we talked about this last time, his lordship to take place in my life, and for me
14:19 to now, walk that out and do his will. That's what it means to seek 1st his kingdom and his righteousness. God says the same thing over and over again. Make me king and do
14:31 my will. Do what's righteous. And it's it's the word righteousness is really interesting word, appears over 300 times in New Testament. And, it's,
14:42 it's used interchangeably with the word justice. And what he's saying is is that I want you to do my will that pleases me. So there's a there's a dimension of honor and
14:54 worship and and pleasure that God gets when we do his will. And so that is something that, to me is a is a light verse, Matthew 6 33. Seek 1st his kingdom and his righteousness.
15:06 And then god says, I'll add everything. I'll take care of everything. And it's a context of the financial blessing. It'll meet all of our needs according to his riches and glory and in Christ Jesus.
15:18 Amen. Thank you, papa j. Yeah. For sure. I think, you know, it's, and you make a great distinction as how the holy spirit is involved in all of this because it's not just by works, but
15:30 by his grace. Right? And so leadership skills and organizational systems, all of that can be taught almost anywhere. But why is the presence and the power of the holy
15:41 spirit essential to planting the kind of church we're talking about, Papa Ching?
Power of the Holy Spirit
15:47 Well, that's a great point and great question because, you know, my I went to 8 years of Fuller Seminary. It's a 3 year program for master of
15:59 divinity and, 3 year for the doctor of ministry. But because I was married, I was pastoring, and, I had children, I had to spread out to 8 years and was
16:10 all about leadership. But apart from Peter Wagner, the leadership did not emphasize the power of the Holy Spirit. There was an evangelical traditional school. And I look at, a
16:22 lot of the leadership conferences, and they're good. They're tremendous principles on the word of God. And, and let me just highlight, like any book by John Maxwell, I would
16:34 highly recommend because there are leadership truths and principles, and I love John Maxwell. And he he's had an impact on my life. Well, the thing though, I think we have to offer in,
16:46 our school is of church planning. And by the way, I'm really shifting it more to apostolic leadership and church planning because I'm gonna be the primary teacher. And my emphasis is
16:58 Zechariah 4 6. It's not by might, it's not by power, but by my spirit, says the lord. In other words, it's not just, through, academia that you're gonna be trained.
17:10 It's not just through, leadership principles. They're all great. But we need the power of the Holy Spirit to get the job done. You notice in Acts chapter
17:21 1, when he they asked why are you at this time gonna establish your kingdom? And they were still thinking about geopolitical kingdom, and they still didn't get it even though he was with him for 3 years,
17:33 spent 40 years 40 days after his resurrection discipling them and teaching all the kingdom. They still didn't understand. But he said this, he said, no. You will receive power when the
17:45 Holy Spirit comes upon you and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria to the ends of the earth. He was saying, look, the way you're gonna accomplish this is through the power of the Holy
17:57 Spirit. It's not through the 3 years of teaching with me. All that is all part of and parcel of it. Then later on, we do see in Acts chapter 6 that he said to, to
18:09 the church, let's say, let's raise up 7 deacons, to wait on the server, on the tables, but we must give ourselves to the ministry of the word and prayer. Those 2 things are the things that really
18:21 activate the holy spirit to move in your life is giving yourself to the word and prayer. And so that's the what we are emphasizing. We're really emphasizing the spiritual life because it's like you
18:33 could, give someone fish or teach them how to fish. What we wanna do is equip the people and how to be led by the holy spirit, how to hear the voice of god, how to, move in power of the holy
18:44 spirit because there's no way that we could fulfill the great commission without his power. And so that's why I wanna just say that we add a very unique dimension, and it's not just us.
18:56 It's just Wagner University. There are schools like us. Cars Bible College. I think it's wonderful. But it's hard to bring in the dimension of the Holy Spirit as our teacher.
19:08 Think about it. It says, the Holy Spirit will be your teacher. He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance what he has taught us. He is the spirit of truth. And that's what we wanna do is we wanna speak
19:19 the truth and love and to equip the saints for the work of ministry.
19:24 Absolutely. Well, thank you for making that distinction. Yes. You know, with this church planting, there will be the leadership coaching, the accountability, the mentorship, learning from experienced leaders,
19:36 and but most importantly, I'm glad you spoke about that apostolic relationship, which is so important. So, pastor Jay, before we we close here, the call to action, what would you say
19:48 to those who, have that stirring in their heart, the burden to plant a church, but keep thinking I'm not ready or I'm not qualified or maybe someday? What would
Discerning and Obeying Your Call
20:00 you say to them?
20:02 Well, again, think about Jesus calling the disciples. They say that John the beloved was around 14 years old. And, by the way, we want to really go after young people.
20:14 And what what we wanna do is, please, just obey the Holy Spirit. Don't worry about finances. Don't worry about relocation. But most of
20:26 this is online. There'll be some in person classes, but most of it be online. And, and so we wanna make it affordable. There are scholarships available, but the bottom line is that is Jesus
20:37 asking you to do it? Because 1 of the things that I'm gonna teach is the importance of obeying the holy spirit. Everything that I have built by God's grace, I'm talking about, HIM that's now in over 70
20:49 nations, the call prayer movement, that brought over 500000, the building of our church and buying the ambassador auditorium was all as a result of just
21:01 obeying the holy spirit. And that's why he gets all the glory because it had nothing to do with us. It's just obeying whatever he asked me to do. And I'm asking you to do the same thing. It's just to obey the holy
21:12 spirit. If god speaks to you, just obey and you watch. God will part the Red Sea. He'll provide for you. He'll open doors for you. He'll help you to relocate if that's if you're in another country and you wanna be
21:24 closer in proximity. And and, and I know Los Angeles is very, very expensive. And that's why this school is an online school. We're not asking you to live here to afford the high taxes and
21:35 the cost of living in Los Angeles. We wanna make it as affordable, but we do wanna plant 300 churches in the next 4 years in California primarily. This is all part of
21:47 seeing revival and reformation, which is the mandate the Lord gave me going all the way back to 19 82 when I lived in Maryland when god gave me a a dream. A black man appeared to me and said, come to Los Angeles. And
21:59 then he says, a great harvest, great revival is coming. And so I really believe that, we're gonna see, a harvest come in, but we need a new wineskin. And this reminds me of the
22:11 Jesus people movement. When I got saved in 19 73, the churches were not ready. They could not handle, the harvest that came in. Some did, like Chuck Smith with Costa
22:23 Mesa, Calvary Chapel, and, Jack Hayford and others really embrace, the hippies that got saved. But we need to, embrace. And 1 of the things the Lord told me
22:35 is that this is gonna be a tremendous harvest with the Hispanics. And I my goal is 40 percent of our church plan will be upon among the Hispanics who speak
22:47 Spanish and that, we want to really bring in the harvest and have a church. There's not enough churches. Most of them come from a Catholic background, and, there's not enough Hispanic churches, and I feel
22:59 it's just totally inadequate where it's at. And so we wanna plan a tremendous number of churches, and we wanna disciple them in a biblical way. We wanna be a New Testament church, and so we're gonna teach
23:10 what that looks like in the school of church planning, but really it's about apostolic leadership. So if God speaks to you now the big question is how do you know God's speaking to me? And there's 4 things that I
23:22 wanna just say, that has to converge. Number 1, had has to be based on the word of God. If if anything you feel that God's speaking to is not based on the word of God, it's your pizza that
23:34 you had last night or something else. Number 2, he will guide you supernaturally. Dreams, prophetic words, you know, maybe some kind of a prophetic encounter.
23:47 Number 3, this is really important, is godly counsel. The bible says in Proverbs 11, I believe, is 14, in a multitude of counselors, there is safety. We're talking about godly
23:59 counsel. Be the Psalm 1 said, do not stand the counsel of the ungodly or sit in the seat of scoffers or walk in the path of sinners. But your delight will be in the word of the lord, and in the word, you will meditate
24:10 day and night. And so we're talking about godly counsel. And I didn't make a decision. Like, for example, when God spoke to me to run for governor, 1st of all, I knew it
24:22 was of the Lord because I didn't wanna do that. I said, please God, not this. But the 2nd thing is I had to get supernatural confirmation, and then, many know the story that I got invited to,
24:35 meet with president Trump at the White House at the Rose Garden. And then the main thing was my wife. She was the 1st person I shared. If she didn't bear witness, then it was all it would've been that it would've been
24:46 dead. I would've been relieved. I would say, thank you, sweetheart. Thank you, Jesus. But she said, this is the reason why we're here. As you say, this is all part of revival and reformation. And so I got
24:58 the affirmation, but it wasn't just Sue. I talked to Lou Engle, and his word is go big and go strong. I called Bill Johnson, and he's my pastor. And you need to ask your pastor about
25:10 this. And my and Bill said, you know, the big question is is did Jesus speak to you? He really puts the ball back in my court, and I said, yes. And he says, I you have my total support. And Cindy Jacobs, I
25:22 gave her a call. And, again, in a multitude of counselors, there is safety. And the last thing is that the doors just have to open up. If this is of the Lord, then,
25:34 so the the 1st is the word of God. 2nd is any kind of supernatural confirmation. 3rd, godly counsel, but it's like the doors open up. And, you know, all of a sudden, the
25:46 finances come in or, the, opportunity relocate takes place or the, you know, of your pastor's blessing is a door opening up. And I
25:58 really import important that you get a pastor's blessing. Now they may feel insecure because they think you're gonna be leaving and and planning the church, and that's gonna be as in competition with him. And this is
26:08 where we have to just say, okay. Pastors, you know, we need to be kingdom minded, kingdom martyrs. It's not about our local church. It's about advancing God's kingdom. And unfortunately, a lot
26:20 of pastors are stuck. We have a a value of the kingdom that anyone who wants to leave, as long as they're going to another church, we bless them. And we just, encourage them. We celebrate
26:32 them because we see it as as a promotion when they leave that they're going to a next level. It's not about us. It's about Jesus and the kingdom. But I I conclude by saying recognize and don't
26:44 organize. Recognize because God's already on the move, and it's just to recognize what the spirit of God's doing. And, and that's really helped me to just recognize because 14 times, Jesus
26:55 says this phrase more than any other phrase, and I'll close with this. He who has ears to hear, let him hear what the spirit say to the church. Think about it more than love 1 another, more than repent for the kingdom of
27:07 heavens at hand. He says, he who has ears to hear, let him hear where the spirit saints are in church. And then my sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. And so this is something
27:19 that in John chapter 10 verse 27 said, every believer, no matter how young you are, has a sheep. You can hear his voice. So God bless you as you're praying about the school
27:30 of, church planning and apostolic leadership, I really believe will change your life. And even if you don't plan a church afterwards, but you go to a whole different level of being a good
27:42 church member and a leader in your church and be more effective pastor, it is well worth the training. I promise you that even if you don't plan a church.
27:52 Yeah. Amen. You bring up a very good point, pastor Che. There are so many positions in the church where 1 can get involved, whether it's a ministry or, leadership as an elder or, you know,
28:04 associate pastors, etcetera. There there are many things that we can be doing. Pastor Che, thank you for sharing so much wisdom with us. And before we close today, will you be, willing to pray for us, those
28:16 that are right now are saying, are you calling me to plant a church, Lord? Can you please pray us out?
Prayer and Call to Action
28:24 Absolutely. I'd be love I would love to father, 1st of all, we just want to submit ourselves to your loving lordship. Our lives are not our own. It's been bought with a price. You have a right to our lives. You've made
28:35 us. You bought us, and we are now your children, and and we look to you, our heavenly father, for guidance and counsel. And, Lord, we just ask you to speak for your servant
28:47 who's listening. I pray, Lord, for the ability to hear clearly and, and to hear confirmation from God's word, from, supernatural
28:59 confirmation, godly counsel, and, the doors would open up. Now we could just recognize and not organize. And your word says the steps of a righteous man,
29:11 the righteous woman ordered by you in Psalm 37 23. So order the steps of those who are watching this, and I pray, Lord, that you'll confirm this move as they have a
29:23 desire. If you have a strong desire, probably because it's it's, of the Lord. He's put that desire in your heart to be trained and to be discipled by me and,
29:35 many others. But it will be a tremendous mentoring time. I'll be the primary teacher at the school. And so, Lord, I just thank you that it's a privilege for me to raise up the next generation of leaders, of
29:46 apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. And so, Lord, we thank you that this is all part of your end time purpose that we're to equip the saints for the work of ministry. So until we come to the
29:58 unity of faith, faith, to the fullness of the stature of Christ, to a mature man. And so we just thank you that you're perfecting us, for your 2nd coming. You're coming for a bride
30:10 as beautiful without spot or blemish. And we thank you that you're on the move and we're part of your purposes. And help us be like David who served the purposes of God in his generation, and then he fell asleep.
30:22 We ask for this in Yeshua's name and on the name of Jesus. Amen and amen.
