The Danger of Spiritual Drift 0:00 And so today, we're gonna be finishing finishing well. So, and I'm I've I've enjoyed this series more than I have any others in a long, long time. And we've just kind of dove into this thing. And when we were talking0:11 about finishing well last week, we talked about the concept that we are really, really good at starting stuff but not that good at finishing stuff. And even me in the message, I think that's hilarious that we0:23 we started finishing well and we didn't finish it well. I mean, how ironic. But don't look at me like I'm the only 1 that has started something and not finished it. Because like we talked about last week, we're all0:33 really good at starting stuff and not finishing. And we've all, you know, been lured into the infomercial, and we wanna get in shape. And for 3 easy payments of 39 99, and for 6 minutes, we can have abs, you know,0:45 started. And it turns out we don't have abs. And turns out the thing just lives up under the the bed. Right? And we've we've all joined the membership that, you know, at the gym in January, because we're all gonna get0:55 fit in this year. We're gonna change our life. And we sign up. We use a couple times but we're not good at finishing what we started. And and what I know this is true because you you come rolling in summertime about July1:06 on the membership you ain't used in month and they put you in the new member line, you know. And they give you a bottled water and they want to tell you about all the different, you know, packages they have. And it's1:14 like, wait, I'm already I'm already part of the deal, you know. You just haven't seen me here. So we're really good at starting stuff and not finishing it. And men especially, we're good at that too. Remember we joked1:23 about last week that there's that project around the house your wife nagged you about. I mean, asked you over and over nicely about, and you got all the tools out, got about an hour deep into it, and you needed a1:32 particular socket wrench to finish it right. And you thought if I just leave all the tools there, then it'll remind me that I'll come back and I'll I'll finish the deal and the tools are still there and it's been 61:40 months. Right? And so we're really, really good at starting stuff, but we're not so good at follow through and finishing well. When you talk about our spiritual life, the most important area of our life, we kind of do1:51 the same thing. We're really good at jumping on the bandwagon. We're going to follow Jesus and we're going to start out strong. And a lot of times what happens is we start out really well, but we end up in a place that2:01 we never intended to be. We end up so far off thought when we started the Christian journey and the faith. And some for some of us, our trust in God later is2:13 no greater than it was when we 1st started. And what happens along the way? What got us off course? And you remember last week we talked about the drift that we all are prone, that none of us are immune2:25 no matter how good God's been to you to drifting spiritually in our lives. And we covered 4 areas in the book of Nehemiah last week. And here's the 4 areas that we saw them drift. This is 24002:37 years ago. We still drift according to these areas today. We we saw them drift biblically. You know, they stop following the word of God. When I see people that drift and they don't finish well and they don't, you know,2:47 get into God's best, their ideal, most of the time they get away from the word of God. They start picking parts of the word of God that they want to obey, but then these other parts they don't like so much.3:00 Word of God. Or we start to drift financially, when we get away from, how God says we ought to do our finances. We saw that in in Nehemiah. We also drift ecclesiastically. This just means from church. Okay? During3:12 those days they were to observe the Sabbath and they got away from that and they began to drift. And, we do that too when we when we miss out on church or it's not a priority or especially for the global family this is3:23 really difficult. Cause when we closed the church for a little bit to figure things out during this pandemic, me and my wife even found ourselves in the same spot. It was difficult to, have church and let it be normal3:34 because the kids are yelling and all that kind of stuff. And so what we did about Midway through is we actually set a time and a date. We said we're gonna be there 7 in the morning before those little devils I mean,3:44 before those angels wake up. And we're gonna get dressed up like we're going to church and we're gonna have our coffee and we're gonna sit there and we would have church that way. But we begin to drift sometimes when we3:53 get out of church. And then of course, we drift financially, but we'd also drift, relationally. We see in the book of Nehemiah, they married people that were outside the faith. And y'all we do this all the time. We'll4:04 marry the person because, you know, they're they're cute. We've been, you know, we've been waiting our whole lives for them. Now we just met them 2 days ago, but we're in love. And, you know, do do they know God? No. But4:14 I can win them to Jesus. And we do the whole, you know, talking ourself into stuff. And anytime you talk yourself into stuff, it's probably not a good idea. And we begin to drift or we get around the wrong people, and we4:23 start making the wrong decisions. And what I find interesting is we what we talked about last week, 24 year hundred year old story, and it shows us the same spots that we drift today. And drifting,4:35 as we talked about last week, is something that we don't notice in ourselves. We don't even know we're drifting when we're drifting to these areas. I mean, it's almost like an undertow at the the beach, you know. You've4:46 all been at Panama City Beach and growing up as a kid, you know, your mom told you the same thing that she told me. You know, you're gonna get in the water. I've got this big red cooler and this big bright umbrella. And4:56 if you if you ever start drifting the undertow, you start to look for the red cooler and the bright umbrella. Can't find mom and dad. It turns out everybody else had the same rule. They all have bright umbrellas and red5:07 coolers, you know, and you end up mile and 0.5 in front of Club LaVilla. None of y'all did. And it happened to be Thursday, the bikini contest day. And And it wasn't it was unintentional, but you began to drift.5:19 And when you got out, you knew you had drifted because mom was standing right there. You know? You know what I'm saying? That's kind of how it is in these areas where we drift. We don't even know we're drifting. And last5:29 week, we saw the people drift in these areas. And if you're here for the 1st time, you're checking it out online. I don't want to leave you out because honestly, you're here on the very last week. We're closing this5:40 sucker up this week. And I don't want you to miss out on the story because what happened last week was a shocker to most of us in this in this room. And so let me catch up really quick. Nehemiah was a a very very,5:51 important guy. He worked for the king of Persia. And Nehemiah found out that his hometown was in ruins. The gates were burned with fire. The walls that secured the city were no more. The people were in debt. I mean, they6:01 were in a mess. They were in such a mess that they were having to sell their businesses, to pay their bills. They were having to sell their houses. They were having to sell their children, often slavery, to pay for the6:11 debts. And this broke Nehemiah's heart, so he sets out. And what we've been following over the last 15 weeks is he rallies them together and they rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. They're they're making this thing a city6:22 again and they do it in a record 52 days and then they begin to rebuild the the the, city inside the walls and the people begin to move in there and they begin to open their businesses there and they begin to operate the6:33 church again and the people on fire forgot and Nehemiah stays there for 12 years and pours his life, pours his heart, pours his soul into building this6:44 city, God city. And then Nehemiah goes back were. And this is where the shocker was last week. You guys.6:56 They, within 2 years, went right back to where they were before. Last week going how how7:08 after all God did, after all the miracles we saw, after all Nehemiah did, it took you 2 years to ruin it all. And we're saying, have this happen. Yet, all of us are prone to the7:20 same thing. And it's when we drift in these 4 areas. But if I would have left you there last week, which is that, we are absolutely floored with, you know, what happened. We would have known how we drift, but we wouldn't7:32 have known how to stop the drift. Like if some of you are in your marriage or relationships or church or in your body, you're drifting and you don't know it. You say, Bernadette, I'm I've drifted. That's why I'm here.7:43 It's January. I've drifted so far away from God. That's why I'm here. And if we would have left off last week just there, we would have known, you know, how to fix it. But tonight, luckily for us at the end of this7:53 chapter, chapter 13, Nehemiah lays out for us in a not so sugar coated way. If we're willing to follow and be a leader like Nehemiah, heClear Biblical Standards 8:05 lays out very clearly how we can finish well. Because after all, this has been a story not just about building a wall, as you've been told growing up. This is a story about God building a leader who would then build a8:16 group of people, who would rebuild a culture, who would follow God in a world that didn't. And that's been our call. I want you to know that God wants to build you into the type leader. That the people that follow you up8:27 under your influence on your team, your employees, your family, will then begin to follow God and you will begin to shape a culture to follow God even in a world that doesn't. And hopefully you do it so well that the8:39 people on the outside, the unbelievers begin to peek in and want what you have. And so as we look at this tonight, if we're gonna be leaders that finish well that avoid the drift or get off the drift and step8:51 into God's best, we've got to do a few things. Number 1, we've got to have clear biblical standards. We've got to have clear biblical standards. That's the 1st thing we see Nehemiah do when he comes back into the9:02 onto the scene here. And they've done ruined everything. Y'all he's hot. I mean he is. He's red hot. He's mad. And if you notice, the 1st thing he does is in9:14 these 4 areas, the same areas that we talked about last week that we drift in. He goes and corrects them and he aligns them with the Bible and he sets some clear biblical standards in every area that they had drifted.9:26 Look at this. Biblically, this is verse 8 through 9. He goes in and he throws out Tobiah's stuff at the temple. Remember the word of God said that no Ammonite could be in the assembly and the high priest had9:37 done lost his morality and then put not only an Ammonite, with the assembly but put him living in the temple, living where the tithes and offerings were counted and he was an enemy of Israel. And so he was disobeying,9:50 the word of God. And Nehemiah ain't having it. He goes in and throws dressers out and throws beds out and throws his drawers out all up in the street. And everybody saw what kind of underwear he had and it was9:59 embarrassing. I'm just make sure you're paying paying attention. Still with me? And Nehemiah clears it up. Standards wise, he said, this is a standard. God's word. This is what we're gonna do. And he gives him clear10:11 biblical standard. Then he does it financially. Remember it says he addressed the rulers in verse 12. Brings all the rulers and says, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah. You mean you're not tithing? You mean you're10:22 not putting God 1st financially? You have now made yourself unblessable. Do you not remember what we talked about? And he sets clear biblical standards. He says bring the tide back. Then he goes, it does get on the10:33 Sabbath, the ecclesiasticity. It's verse 22. Verse 22, he comes over. He says, I ordered the Levites. That was the preacher boy. They were to purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the Sabbath10:45 day. He says, time out. You've slid and we're gonna reset these clear biblical standards and let's clean up the Sabbath day. And so he does that and then he also goes over there. We know what he did relationally. You all10:57 remember this verse. This verse probably wasn't on your, you know, your little children's memory. Verses, he finds out that, that they were marrying people that weren't believers and that it was going to affect the faith11:07 of future generations. And, well, here's what he did. He said, I confronted them and called down curses on them. Them. And I looked into the Hebrew and it it means he beat some of them. And he says, I pulled11:19 out some of their hair. And I looked into the Hebrew and that too. And he well, he pulled out their hair. And then he he said, I made them swear in the name of God that they would not let their children intermarry with11:28 the pagan people of the land. Seems to me that Nehemiah is pretty serious about having some clear biblical standards and living according to the word of God, isn't it? He I mean,11:40 homie don't play that. He comes in looking like Clint Eastwood and he says, here's what we're going to live by this book. Says we're going to live by this 1, and this is the standards in which we're going to live by. And11:48 he resets them. Standards are supposed to be in your life, non negotiable, immovable values in your life in which you filter12:00 every decision through. That's what a standard is. When you're living according to God's word, it should be a non negotiable, immovable value in your life in which you filter every decision that you that you make by.12:13 Should I purchase the car? Should I purchase the house? Is it too much? Depends on what standard you're living by. Should I date the person even though I know I'm not gonna marry them? Depends on what standards you're12:24 living by. Should I tithe? Depends on what standards you live by. Your level of living depends on your level of standards. And Nehemiah is saying the highest level of standards standards we must live by and die12:36 by are clear biblical standard. Here's the rules. I'm talking about standards, by the way, that don't bend the culture. We're we're bending everything to culture. And I'm talking about12:48 biblical standards that don't bend. That we say, this is what the Bible says. Not I like this part over here, but I don't like this part. This is what the whole word of God says. And here's how I'm gonna live my life12:59 according to it. You know, young people, if you're dating, I would highly encourage you. Define those standards in advance long before, you know, you you you you get deep into the relationship. You know, how13:11 what are your standards? You ever thought about that in advance? How long will you stay over the boyfriend's house, the girlfriend's stuff? How far is too far? Am I going to date someone who's not a believer? Now, am I13:23 going to marry them if they're of a different belief system? Adults, Deciding beforehand. Before you get married. Where will you go to church? Will we tie? How often will I date my wife? If you're in13:35 sales. Before you take the big job you've been, you know, you've been excited about. Before you take it, how long will I be away from my family? What's the magic number that I'm willing to be away from my family? And13:46 some of you may say and you're watching online, you hear you may say, that sounds legalistic. That sounds like God doesn't want me to have any fun or do anything. But Nehemiah would tell us this. No. Clear biblical13:58 standards is God's way of saying, here's the boundaries and I want you to remain blessable. Here are my boundaries because I want you to remain blessable. And we all14:10 know stories and you know stories and I know stories of people that did not finish well. And almost all of them are are are not because of what they believe. Sometimes we think that in a church. Well, well, they got off14:21 on a wrong belief. They started following them rules. And most of the time, the people that fall, it's not Most of the time, it's not what they because of what they believe. It's14:33 because14:33 of what they believe.14:33 It's because of how they believe. It's because14:35 of how they believe. It's because of how they believe. It's because of how they believe. It's because of how they believe. It's because of14:35 how they believe. It's because of how they believe. It's because of how they believe. It's because of how they believe. It's because of how they believe. It's because of how they believe. They lower their standards and14:38 stopped living their own they And somewhere along the way they said, you know, everything was fine. Until I started hanging out with a co worker a little bit longer because she was cute. And, you know, my wife was always14:48 nagging me. And, you know, I just I like being there. And then what happened is lowered our standards. See you see it's our standards when they when they begin to be lowered, that's how we fall short. That's how we miss15:00 finishing well. Especially in those areas that we're prone to sin. We have clear biblical standards. Clear biblical standards how we measure every area of our life, you know. And so what are your standards? You ever15:12 thought about that? I mean, Nehemiah comes in, the 1st thing he does is reset the standard button. Maybe tonight for some of you, you said, hey, that's me. Word of God. I've drifted financially. Well,15:23 then press the reset. Be just like me and mine. So you know what? I haven't looked at it in a while, but you're right. Here's my standards for dating. Here's my standards for my finances. Here's my stand. You don't have15:34 to let that be the end story. You press the reset button. And so the 1st thing that you gotta do if you're gonna step into God's best and you're gonna finish well is you gotta have clear biblical standards. But here'sLeadership That Brings Accountability and Confrontation 15:44 the funny thing about this story. Nehemiah had already set those clear biblical standards. You remember we did a whole lesson a while back on, you know, the old school standards. He had15:56 already set them. So why didn't they stick? Here's why. Clear biblical standards are a starting point, but they rarely stick without this 2nd16:07 thing. Without leadership that brings accountability and leadership that is willing to confront. It's clear biblical standards. They are a great starting point and they are a must,16:19 but they rarely stick long term unless you have a leadership that brings accountability and leadership that's willing to confront. Notice Nehemiah does that in all 4 areas. Areas. 1st aid, he comes in, he throws the16:31 guys, household goods out of the the room. And he commands in the clean room. What's he doing? He's keeping them accountable, and he's confronting the He's not coming to say, well, I don't want to hurt his16:45 comfortable and I don't I don't want to hurt nobody's feeling. No. He comes in and says, this is what the word of God says, and I'm going to come in and confront the issue and keep you accountable. Then he does the16:54 financial. He brings the leaders in and he said this, verse 11. He says, I immediately confronted the leaders and demanded why is the temple of the of God been neglected. He comes in. He brings17:06 accountability and he confronts them. And then he guides them and says this. He says, I gather them together and I set them in their place. Sounds pretty confronted, does it? Verse 12 says, then all Judah brought the17:15 tithe and grain and new wine and oil to the storehouse. He says, we're gonna be accountable to God's word. I'm gonna bring the type leadership to be accountable. And and I'm gonna confront you when you get away from17:24 God's word. Then we see ecclesiastically in the church. Remember verse 17? Same thing. He says, so I confronted the nobles and said, why are you profaning the Sabbath day in this evil way? Then he then he goes on. He17:35 actually threatens assault on the people selling goods. Remember that? People selling goods on the on the Sabbath. He actually goes over there and he said, I warned you. And I said to them, why do you spend the night17:44 around the wall? If you do so, I'll lay hands on you. I mean, he said, I'll go full fledged UFC on on you. Now this is a leader that brings both accountability, but he's confronting17:56 where they're wrong. And then we we we see it, of course, relationally. Remember he says again, I I confronted them, called down curses on them, beat some of them up, pulled their hair out. This joker don't play. But18:08 but if you notice there, he brings accountability and he's a leader that brings a style that's both confronted. And what's interesting is the book, of Ezra. Ezra was around that same time. Ezra, when he got18:20 mad at God's people, remember he pulled out his own hair? Nehemiah was the type leader that pulled out their hair. Nehemiah was a guy that he didn't play. He didn't play. And here's the application. Listen to18:32 this very closely. Lean into this. If the application of this book is more than just a wall and it's about God building a leader in you, that would then build a group of people that would follow God in the world that18:43 didn't, then you need to be a leader that brings accountability to those you influence. And you need to be a leader that's willing to confront those that you influence18:55 when they're drifting. And this is equally important. This is a big and. Equally as important, you need to be the type leader that is under a leader that brings accountability19:07 to you and confronts you when you begin to drip. See we all like the 1st part. Yeah. Bead leader tells my children, Bead leader tells my team, I'll bring a copality. I'll put the19:19 badge on. I'll confront them in their sin. We like that. We like being the spiritual police officers, don't worry. We like it.19:35 And it's not only what you need to stay in the will of God, that's what you should want. To be correct, don't don't call my issue issue. They don't really want to be in the will of God. They want to be19:46 right, but they don't want to be right with God. Because sometimes being right with God is very uncomfortable, isn't it? And you want to not only be the leader that brings accountability and be the leader that confronts19:57 the people up under you that you influence when they get off course, but you want to be a person that is coachable. You want to be a person that says, if I stepped out, please speak speak into my life. Keep me20:09 accountable. Keep me from going and drifting far too far off, of course. You want to be under that type leadership. And if we're going to step into God's best spiritual, we're going to finish well. We've got to have20:20 those people in our lives to say, I know you've thought about the new job. I know you've thought about moving your family, but have you thought about what it's gonna do to this this area? Or I know you want the car. I20:31 know you want the house. It's your dream house, but have you thought about how much debt you're gonna get into? Or I know you you know, you bought the ring. You sent out the whole announcements, but I know you don't20:40 wanna hear this, but are they the 1? You know what I mean? You you want to be and you want to have that person that says, hey, I know,20:54 going to get offended with me. I know your feelings are going to get hurt with me, but you need to watch this area. It could lead to a stronghold. Or you need to watch this area. It could be a sin. I know you don't think21:04 it's an issue because you're too close to the issue to know it's an issue, but I see it's an issue. Just trust me. Be careful. You want to have people in your life that you can21:16 be under that keep you accountable and that confront you when you begin to drift. And young people and adults and everything, we all need that. And you you by the way need to be under a pastor, under a small21:28 group leader that sometimes makes you uncomfortable. That sometimes says stuff that's in the Bible that you, you know, honestly, you say, I don't really like that part of the Bible. But dad gumming, he's gonna say it21:39 again, Annie, and it's gonna make you uncomfortable. And sometimes you ought to come to church sometimes. You know, not every time. I'm not here to beat you up. But you ought to leave and go, oh. Now I got to work on21:49 that a little bit. That's God's way of speaking to you. You ought to be that type leader and you ought to be under that type leader. Small group you ought to be if you're a parent, by the way, you ought to be that21:58 leader. You know, you you do know that you're the CEO of your home. Right? You you do know that. We live in a a world where the kids are the CEOs and they run the the the show. Where do you want to go to eat little22:09 Johnny? Little Johnny ain't buying this the gas in this car. Little Johnny's not buying the the dinner. I'm going to say where we going to dinner and you're going to be blessed to go. Right?22:22 Y'all we're you are the CEO of your home. Leader. You are the leader. You are the 1 that keeps them accountable. You're the 1 that confronts issues. Well, my friends got a22:33 phone. They all got phones. They're 4. Who are they gonna call22:39 their 4? They're 4. Who are they gonna call their 4? They're 4. Who are they gonna call their 4? They're 4. Who are they gonna call their 4?22:40 They And it just shoot straight. It sickens me. Now you do what you want. I'm not the CEO of your home. I'm only the CEO of my home. But in22:52 my home, I'm not handing the keys to the world to a 6 year old.23:03 Phone. Your 6, here's the keys to the world. Figure it out. Are you are you nuts? If that's you, do what you want to do. But I'm23:15 just saying, you're the CEO, but everybody's got them. So? So is it good for them? Be a leader that both brings accountability23:27 and confronts them for the best of them. Not for their comfort, but for them. If you're a small group leader, you don't have no idea how much how much influence you have. You small group leaders in our our middle school23:39 and our high school, you have no be that leader because chances are that person don't have a good home life. Be that leader that both keeps them accountable and is a confrontor because I tell you what, they'll respect23:49 you in the end for. I think about a a a guy in my life that will kept me accountable and He was a I was a pastor's kid. Pastor's kid is tough being a pastor's kid. But it's even24:01 tougher on those who are on staff, and they have to have the pastor's kid in their small group. Because the pastor's kid, I'm just beyond them, you know, I24:08 I was him. So I pastors can't feel like they can get away from with anything.24:08 They do. They pastor's kid feel like they can get away from with anything. They do. They do. They do what I want to do. You work from my day. So technically, I run this small24:20 group. That's kind of the you know what I mean? That's kind of the mental. I know you know you you're my you're passive, but I run this show. Yeah. You got a little bit of that to you when you're a passive kid. There24:32 ain't no past there's there's a couple of past kids in here. You know you know another but you need that leader in your life that keeps you kind. When I had 1 in my life, he was about 2 50 pounds. He was my middle school24:41 a small group leader. He's my middle school leader at that time. His name was Steve. And Steve was 1 of those that you won't mess with. Steve was a big old guy. Steve looks like he just eats honey bunches of steroids or24:51 something. He's huge. Big old 2 50 pound guy25:02 never saw him without a fanny. But I ain't about to tell this cat nobody wears fanny packs no more. Because he looks like he could just crush you into a powder or something. You know what I mean? And he was25:14 my small group leader. I remember he took me out to, Applebee's 1 night. It was all the leaders. And He took me out there and I, you know, I like make people laugh, so I'm making people laugh. But I'm middle schooler, so25:25 I just keep towing the line and keep towing the line until I eventually cross the line and I keep crossing and crossing and everybody's saying it's so funny because all the pastor's kids said this joke. There's the Steve25:34 ain't laughing. His fanny pack ain't moving. It's just staring at me. I'm thinking, well, it's not good, but I'm already deep into it, so you gotta keep making people25:46 laugh. You know, you just pretend not to look at Steve and his fanny pack. And so you go on and go on. Then I had to get in the the Jeep with Steve and he pulls up and I got a long black driveway and he he he presses25:55 puts it in park and cuts it off before we go to driveway. And I'm like, the driveway's up there, Steve. But his fanny pack's still staring at me. He said, you, you crossed the line tonight.26:07 I'm like, you know what? I mean, what's he gonna do? And I he said, and you cross the line and you're not gonna do that again. Like, is this a question? Does he have something to fanny pack I don't know about?26:20 Is he threatening him for my life? I don't know, but I'm terrified. I'm terrified of him. It's real. The lights are cut off. I mean, what's he gonna do to me? And, you know, he's gonna does he got a little shank? And I26:32 don't know. We don't know to this day what he had in his vanity. All I know is I was scared for my life. You see, you're not gonna do that no more. It wasn't even a question. It was a it was a fright. You're not gonna do26:42 that no more. I'm not gonna tell your daddy about it because you're not gonna do it anymore. Yes, sir. Cranks him back up because I never did it again. I stayed within line. You know that Steve actually was in my26:53 wedding. He grew up as though he's 1 of the best men in my wedding. You know why? I respected him because he didn't care if I was a pastor's kid. He didn't care if I got if he got fired for it. He don't care because I'm27:05 up under his influence and he's gonna keep that boy accountable and he's gonna confront me when I get off course. And I wanna tell you, you need that in your life. You wanna be that in your life, and you need that in27:15 your life because clear standards, buddy, they don't they're a great starter. And they have great great motivation to get a starter, but they will not stick. Unless you've got a leader in your life or you27:27 are a leader to the people that you influence, that both brings accountability and confronts when we begin to drift. And that's what we see here happen in in the book of Nehemiah. So let me ask you. It's27:39 just throwing it back at you. Who do you have in your life that's a that's a fanny pack wearing Steve? Who do you have in your life that that's a that's a Nehemiah? Who do you have in your life that if they found outShow more
