Discovering CURE International 0:02 And good morning, America. Welcome back to the All American Book Club. I'm Eden Gordon Hill. It's an honor to be here with you for a very special... For Pray TV and pray dot com. We are here0:14 with Brandt Hansen, who's a dear friend to the show. He is a nationally syndicated radio host, a podcaster, and an advocate for healing children with correctable disabilities through Cure0:26 International. And that is why Brandt is here today. He is here representing Cure International. They do powerful things to heal children around the world. We also0:37 will be talking about his book, Living Unoffended, talking about community and bringing unity together for those in our world's backyard. So please help me welcome back to the show, Grant0:49 Hanson. I am so glad to have you here. What a joy it is to talk about Cure International.0:55 It totally is. And what's wild... And thank you, by the way. But what's wild is so many people haven't heard of it. And then when they do, they're like, why haven't I heard of this before? So that was my experience too.1:05 Like, once you hear about it, it's like, this is incredible. So thank you for the opportunity.1:10 Absolutely. Well, that's what... That was gonna be 1 of my 1st questions. What is the story behind you coming to know Cure International? How did how did that happen for you?1:20 Well, you know what's funny? I was I was supposed to MC. I was MCing a TobyMac concert years ago.1:27 A Toby. I'm a terrible MC, but that's not the point. But they they told me to go out and, like, make some announcements. So 1 of them was about CURE. And I was like, what is cure? I wanna know what I'm talking about when I get1:28
1:39 on stage. And they explained to me. They're like, well, you know how millions of kids have correctable disabilities they're born with or something happens? Well, in a lot of countries, they
1:51 never get treated. Mhmm. And so what we do is we heal them because Jesus told us to heal people. Yes. And I'm like, I have never thought about that. It's stuff like... Even like clubfoot or something. There's a lot of
2:03 stuff in the US is taking care of lickety split. In another country, it might mean you're on cardboard for the rest of your life begging. Right. And we can we can fix it. So why wouldn't we?
2:15 And when I heard about that and given kinda my background and stuff I've been through with with Christianity and church stuff, a lot of lot of church hurt and hypocrisy and stuff, I was like, I wanna
2:27 see that because that sounds like Jesus to me, like, actually healing people. Mhmm. And so I went to the hospital, and visited, and I I have been hooked ever since. Anybody who goes to 1 of...
2:38 There's 8 hospitals. They're all top notch surgical hospitals. They charge the families nothing because they they don't have anything. We pick up the bill on this end,
2:51 and it's... The surgeries have changed these kids' lives forever and their families. Like, I I can go on about it forever, so I'll stop myself on this. But,
3:00 No. No. You're good. I was gonna I was gonna mention the map that I have, pulled up to talk about the hospital, but go ahead. I'll do that after you mention your next statement.
3:10 Yeah. So each 1 of these is, like, world class surgeons. These are permanent hospitals. It's not like Doctors Without Borders or something. Like, it's... These are... The surgeons live there, the nurses. Each hospital
3:21 might have 203 hundred employees, for instance. Mhmm. And the care, it's all done in the name of Jesus overtly. So nobody's nobody's coerced or anything, but we're like, we're...
3:33 We explain the kingdom of god to people. They think they're cursed. So a lot of the time, it's just a mom that the dads leave because they're like, your family must be cursed. You're... You've got a child,
3:45 a baby with some kind of disability. Mhmm. So the moms are oftentimes kicked out of their own communities because they're considered cursed, and people don't want the curse on them. This is very common in traditional
3:57 cultures. I didn't fully realize that, but even if you read, like, bringing a blind man in front of Jesus, like, well, who sinned?
4:04 Yeah.
4:04 That's the typical thing. It's like the moms are blamed. You must have done something immoral, and that's why your child is this freak. Oh, that's
4:13 that's a terrible way to look at it.
4:15 Oh, it's it's horrible, but it... But that's that's the norm thing that these people have been through. They're they're they're considered cursed, and people go running away from them. They hear
4:27 about cure. They hear a rumor or something that somebody could heal your child. These Christians are doing this stuff. And they walk through the door. If they're able to get there, they walk through the door and the
4:38 staff, the the... Everybody there is trained to go running toward them. So they come in the door and, like, they're holding this baby. Everybody's everybody's been running away screaming. And they come and they're for
4:49 the 1st time. So he's like, your daughter is beautiful. Oh my goodness. Can I hold her? Oh, your son is so handsome. This is the 1st time these these women have heard this. So to me... And then healing a child or
5:01 sometimes it's a 15 year old who had burns from when they were 2, but they've been living with these burns. They can't move their arms because they have burn contractures or something. And that's very typical. Mhmm. And
5:11 finally, they're they're healed.
5:13 Mhmm.
5:14 It changes everything for them. So when I saw that, I was like, why isn't this a bigger deal? I literally said to the doctors while I was there, like, how come I never had heard of this before? And they're like, well,
5:25 we're kinda busy. We're doctors.
5:28 Sir.
How CURE Brings Healing and the Gospel
5:30 Yeah. Like, everything in my my experience is just hype and PR stuff. I get it. It's all... Right. It's totally important. But I'm like, this is the most
5:41 beautiful expression of Jesus I've ever seen in my life. So Mhmm. In the scale of it, people don't realize it. It should be on the news every night.
5:50 Right.
5:50 Because this is this is what Christians should be doing. Like, it's so beautiful. Last year, Cure Cure did more than 21000 surgeries.
6:01 How's it all funded? How did it... How do they do this? Is it all
6:04 It's just it's donations? It's donors. It's donors. There's some grants from foundations and whatnot, but it's just donors like you and and me that are going, I'm in. And, honestly, my wife and I, since I have visited,
6:16 I've gone back many times, and my wife has gone too many times. I'm I'm headed to Kenya in a couple weeks to go visit the hospital again. But when you see it in action, it's just like, just take my money.
6:28 Yeah. Yeah. Just take it. The the typical surgery is like 1000 dollars. Like, in in America, we know, like, 1000 dollars gets you, like, 0.5 a Flintstone vitamin and then
6:38 I was gonna say. Yeah. A week at Starbucks maybe.
6:42 Right.
6:43 Yeah. Yeah.
6:44 But but in terms of medical care, like... And a child can get up and walk. You're telling me this 9 year old girl will now be able to walk for the 1st time. Oh my god. Like, that's a bargain. Are you kidding me?
6:56 So anybody who visit the hospitals is... You're just like, just take it. This is this is the the bargain of a lifetime. And these hospitals are some of the most joyful places on the planet. There's worship
7:07 music going. People are singing. There's people becoming believers. We had more than 40000 people that make decisions for Christ last year because you're healing their kids, and you're loving
7:19 them. And it's it's joyful. So there's pastoral staff and there's medical staff at each 1 of these hospitals, and they're both emphasized the same. Like, it's it's spiritual and
7:31 physical. So it's not just you're doing something nice and helping people, like, hey. Hey. Why did you do that? And, oh, well, I'm glad you asked. Like, it's it's thought through. It's overt. And that to me is, like,
7:43 healing and proclaiming the kingdom of god is so powerful.
7:48 Yes.
7:49 So, yeah, anybody who goes, you're like, good grief. Just... You you can go in the OR and watch the... I've been in the OR many times. A little sleeping child, and they pray... The surgeons and the techs and everybody
8:01 pray over the kids, each each child. And you can join into the prayer and watch this thing happen all in the name of Jesus. And sometime... I've been in I've been in the OR when a neurosurgeon in
8:13 Uganda finished up, and he's listening to worship music as he's finishing up brain surgery on a child and singing along as he's finishing up.
8:22 That's amazing. Where did they find these doctors? Where do these doctors come from?
8:26 Well, you know what? A lot of them come... Originally, a lot of them were from the US and the UK and also, like, France and play... So from the west. But part of the brilliance of CURE is their teaching hospitals.
8:38 So as the hospitals have been there for years, they have trained locals Mhmm. By sending them to surgical schools in, like, South Africa and whatnot. But they come back. So all
8:50 the... All all the neurosurgeons now at the Ugandan hospital are Ugandans.
8:55 Wow. That's amazing.
8:57 And so at Kenya, the... All the surgeons are Kenyans. So they've been trained over time. And it's it's really brilliant because you're you're... Having permanent hospitals
9:09 changes the entire country. Like, people hear about this. They find out that Christians are healing their children. And they're doing a a world class job of it. It's it's absolutely brilliant.
9:21 I was noticing the hospital map, and that's what I was gonna mention to you. So Cure Hospital Network, if you go to cure dot org and then what we do, they focus on... I see Nigeria,
9:33 Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Philippines, Uganda, and Ethiopia. I see all of those hospitals. So you said Kenya. What other hospitals have you been to?
9:45 Oh, I've been to... We used to have a hospital in Afghanistan. That's where I went 1st. And, obviously, that's not tenable now. But I've I've been to that 1 when we had that. I've been to Kenya before, before, Ethiopia,
9:57 Zambia, Zimbabwe, Niger, like, almost all of them. I'd like to go to the Philippines. My 1st time... See, this would hook you so fast.
10:09 And my audience, I'm pray.
10:11 Well, I mean, if you're there... Imagine this. I walk in. There's a 17 year old girl who's getting cleft palate surgery. Wow. She's had a cleft
10:23 palate her whole life. She wasn't allowed to go to school. And in fact, her
10:28 palate?
10:29 Her family hid her, so she basically didn't go outside because they didn't want the community knowing that they had a child who was cursed because they'd be kicked out of the community. So she's faced
10:40 nothing but isolation and rejection. Well, I go in the OR. I've I've followed her surgery. That's the 1st surgery. Like, every 1 of these kids' stories is like this. So a 17 year old girl,
10:53 she gets this cleft palate surgery. So you can see as she was recovering in the children's ward, you can see that her her hole is gone, the hole underneath her nose, clear mouth. Like, she looks totally different.
11:05 So there's still sutures. There's still some swelling, but she looks totally different. And I sat down with her and her mom, and I I wanted to... I I wanted a mirror
11:17 because I wanted her to see herself now. She's had this her whole life. You know? It's like, I wanted to see that she's beautiful.
11:25 Mhmm.
11:26 And I didn't have a mirror, but I realized, wait a 2nd. I got my iPhone. And so I turned the camera around and handed it to her, and and she just stared at this
11:37 thing, just gazed. Like, she could not believe what she was seeing because her face is whole, finally. She looks like everybody else. And all
11:49 that's... That... That's her whole definition. So for all these kids, they're defined by this. But for her to just gaze and gaze and gaze and, like, I can't believe what I'm seeing. Like,
12:01 this looks like Jesus to me, like, stuff he would do. If you saw a girl who is desperate to be healed and you could heal her, you do it.
12:08 Right. Right.
12:10 That's all that's all of these kids. They're 2 years old, and they're burned and unable to walk. And we can heal this girl, so now she's 12, and she can get up and walk. That was a girl in Ethiopia.
12:22 But I went bet... You can go bed to bed in the children's wards. Every 1 of these kids' stories is like a movie. They have faced nothing but rejection, and we can heal them. Mhmm. So why in the world
12:34 would we not do that if it's only, like, 1000 dollars of surgery? That's why I was like, please let me be part of this. Please. I I have a... I I can't be a surgeon, but I have a platform, and I
12:45 will write about it. I put it in all my books, which is where you you encountered it 1st, but it's like Yes. This is... When when when you see something, it's like, okay. This looks... This is Jesus shaped. Like Mhmm. I
12:56 want people to see that because there's so much garbage, Mhmm. The hypocrisy and the Showtime Christianity stuff where it's like, I understand why people are turned off. Please let me show you this.
Stories of Transformation
13:08 Mhmm.
13:09 When people are like, look at this tragedy. Where's your god now? Where's your god now? Like, you come with me. I'll show you where he is.
13:17 Mhmm. Well, he's... Well put. Well put.
13:20 Right? Like, he's he's where he's where he's always been. He's with the marginalized and the sick and the people who need healed and the people who need encouraged. Like, he's still doing it. People just don't hear about
13:29 it. Mhmm. Nobody in the world is doing more pediatric surgeries than Cure in the world.
13:36 How long have they been around? Do you know?
13:38 Yeah. I should know better. I'm gonna say, like, 28 years ballpark. Maybe a little bit more than that. I I should know. Maybe it's 30... Maybe it's over 30 now.
13:47 Okay.
13:47 It's... It started with the Kenya hospital. It was a surgeon and his wife who's also a a brilliant, I think she's a nurse, but they had visited Africa and and he was just like, I... We can fix this stuff.
13:59 Ortho... He's an orthopedic surgeon. Mhmm. Like, this is this is easily fixed.
14:04 Yeah.
14:05 So that... He started the 1st 1, and from there, it's just... It's expanded. And I... It's the best news ever that it's expanding. People need to... Like, there's something there's something about healing. Yes. It's not
14:16 it's not just it's not just another thing. I think I think we think in Christian stuff, like, well, that's a nice thing. Oh, no. Healing, Jesus' miracles, not... Like, 75 percent were healing miracles.
14:27 Yes. Yes.
14:29 And I I I ask people, like, why? Because he could've done anything. He could've said watch me blow up this star up, and they're like, bam. See? Isn't that awesome? But but the healing thing, I think this is why it's so
14:41 profound. The kingdom of god, people in in heaven will be able to to leap like deer, it says in Isaiah. Like, the deaf will hear. The lame will leap like deer.
14:54 It's an advanced trailer of heaven. Healing is an advanced trailer of heaven. So Uh-huh. We get to
15:00 I love Like...
15:01 Yeah. We get to do this thing, and people get to see in advance what heaven looks like. Girls get to get up and walk. A boy gets to get up and run for the 1st time. Like, this is every day at these hospitals.
15:12 I wanna ask you something because we have about 4 minutes left, and I knew this was gonna be such an amazing and powerful, God filled segment. I wanna link it back to your book, though. I wanna highlight being
15:24 unoffended. And you talk about in your book community and unity. Bullet point, we need each other. Unity matters to Jesus and redeeming the culture don't condemn
15:35 it. And you, without saying it, have mentioned all 3 of these bullet points as you've been describing your international. But I want...
15:47 I wanna hear from you, though. A call to action for those on pray TV, pray dot com, and those who being burned by the church, being just, you
15:59 know, complacent wherever they are, if they're in the in between, what can be our call to action to come together, unify around cure, unify around our communities?
16:10 Well, being a donor is great. You can sponsor surgery. It's like 1000 dollars, changes lives, like... But the... It's the shoulder to shoulderness of it. Yeah. All of this together. I don't know what your background is,
16:22 like, where you're from as you're as you're watching this or listening to this. Like, I I don't know. But together, to heal in the name of Jesus, the odds of you regretting doing that are very low. Like, in the end
16:34 of your life going, why did I heal those kids? Like, that's probably not gonna be a problem. But the wild thing is at the... At... This is so important. Like, at the hospitals themselves, just like in any country, you've
16:45 got divisions, you've got doctrinal differences, you've got the Right. It's not a it's not a thing because you're you're so busy serving these rejected, precious people and reminding them of the
16:57 goodness of God. It's like when you're shoulder to shoulder doing that, the other stuff isn't such a big deal.
17:03 Right.
17:03 Right. We're we're on the... When you're actually on mission. This is so clearly. Jesus told his disciples to heal the sick and proclaim the kingdom. Like, this is so on mission that the other stuff doesn't...
17:15 It's it's Yeah. Yeah. Well, anyway Right. Here's the here's the beauty of the kingdom. Kids are getting healed because god will use us. Broken as we are, he will use us to do it if we want to.
17:27 Right. Yes. So the call to action would be pray prayerfully consider. You know, if you were being called to serve somewhere or if you're being called to give somewhere to consider
17:39 this. And, no, this is not a Christmas campaign. This is not any campaign. This is just a call of our hearts to say, let's heal these babies.
17:50 Yeah. Right? If we can, why would we not do it? So that's... It's... It... I can't believe that I get to do this. Honestly, my wife and I both... Other donors feel the same way. Like, I cannot believe I get to be part of
Unity Through Mission
18:00 this. This is so beautiful, and it... It's just... It's like, oh, this is why I'm a believer. It's because his kingdom is so awesome. The kingdom of God is great news, not just for me, but for everybody I can
18:12 be a part of healing. Like, that's incredible.
18:15 So let me ask you this. We have about a minute left. I wanna ask you. I know... Thank... Thanks to you and your powerful resources. You have amazing events coming up. I'm grateful for
18:27 the invites that you have sent. I wanna be a part of it. But where can people... We can have them go to Cure International, but are there ways people can literally physically be a part of it
18:39 no matter where they are in the world or where they are in the country? There are few, like, you going to Kenya.
18:46 Yeah. You can. You can you can check out cure dot org, and there's information about that, like how to visit a hospital. If you're a professional, you're a surgeon, for instance, neurosurgery, plastic surgery,
18:57 orthopedic, You you might wanna look at this because it's it's a... And nurses Mhmm. You might wanna visit. You can... Like, there's training. These are teaching hospitals.
19:09 So you can visit. Giving is a fantastic thing. Do not underwrite how awesome that is too. Like, a Cure, you can see the stories of the kids, and, I I wish I I wish we had more time, and I understand.
19:22 But, again, every 1 of these kids is a... Is... It's heartbreaking and then redemptive and joyful.
19:31 Yeah.
19:31 So cure dot r is a great place to start to find out more.
19:35 I would love to be able to... You know, for all of those out there, let's go adopt a kid. Let's go adopt a couple kids. Right? And Yeah.
19:44 You could you could sponsor a surgery.
19:47 Yeah. And get to experience the whole platform. Brent, I'm so thankful for you. Thank you for you and your wife, what you were doing, what you were leading, the power of God in you, the power of
19:58 God in these healing processes for these kids. And also go to your podcast, Living Unoffended. Boy, you know how to shake up people in their cars in rush hour. That is
20:10 for sure.
20:11 Good. Thank you so much. I'm honored.
