I'm your host, Dave Groves, and we're so glad to have you joining us today. We are so happy to welcome back a previous0:49 guest. She is back for a 2nd time. She's an author. She's a podcast host. She's a motivational speaker. She's a hope coach, and we're excited to have her back with us. And that is April1:01 Osteen Simons is here again on the podcast. April?1:04 Hey. I'm so glad to be back. Thank you for having me. It's an honor to be here.1:08 Okay. So, April, you have a brand new devotional preorder from what I understand. It's coming out. Talk a little bit about the inspiration for that, and I'd I love that you have the forward there from your1:20 your mother before she went home, to heaven. And tell us a little bit about your just the the idea behind it, tell us a little bit about your just the the idea behind it and why a devotional.1:30 Yeah. Well, it's called jump start your day. It's a 90 day devotional. And, you know, Dave, I just I know life can get busy. And 1 of the biggest questions that I get asked,1:42 you know, through my DMs or email is, how can I make time for God? I'm I'm a busy mom. You don't even have to say busy with mom. You're the mom and you're doing a lot. You're you're, you know, working, you own a
1:53 business, whatever you do or college student. And so I tried to with my devotional just make it simple, easy. It's about 5 to 7 minutes a day. And, I wanted something
2:05 where you can start your day off with God because when we know we know this. If we can start our day off with God, our day goes better. So my concept behind it was either you let the day
2:17 run you or you run your day. What better way just to wake up and get in God's word. I do a segment of encouragement, then I do a believe it, which is a scripture. I do a say it, which is
2:29 a declaration to speak over your day. I also do a pray it, a prayer for the day, and then I do a live it section, just small. It's 1 way to put in practice what we learned that day. And,
2:41 it's simple. It's practical. That's how I learned. So that's what I I wrote it for. That was my concept behind it because it it's it's everyday filled with hope, but hope is
2:53 not just, positive thinking. Hope is based on God's word. And, I I'd say hope has a name and it's Jesus Christ. So when you begin your day with him, everything doesn't make a
3:05 perfect day, but it makes you armed with joy. It makes you armed with, today, I'm not gonna complain. Oh, that's a big 1. Or, you know, just just, not letting the circumstances of your
3:16 day run your day. And 1 of my favorite parts is that forward right there by my mom, Dodio Steam, like you mentioned. I just love that. I love that she that was 1 of the last things she did, and, she believed in
3:28 me and was 1 of my biggest cheerleaders. And so I love having her on there. It's great.
3:33 Well and we love that your mother was, such a just a encourager, and everybody that ever ever had the opportunity to meet her just knew what a wonderful person she was.
3:46 And, no no wonder that, you know, she raised some great kids. So, I'm sure there's extra jewels in her crown.
3:54 I hope so. She was amazing.
3:56 So this is not an exclusive devotional for women, though. Right? It's it's for men and women.
4:01 It's not. And I I I did some TV shows the other day, and 1 of the guys on there sent me a picture of him doing the devotional with his kids. And I loved that. So they did the
4:13 speak it part out loud. So, no, it's men and women. It's it's anybody and everybody.
4:19 Now you also, I know you've written some other books. I have. I I really like, I love the title of I think it was your last book that you had, which was the Better Than Ever. So talk a little bit
4:31 about it's yeah. I I love the line, get your happy back.
4:35 Get your happy back. We gotta get our happy back. It says get your happy back, stress less, and enjoy everyday life. And Yeah. You know, I believe, Dave, that, you know, according to scripture, John 10
4:47 10, Jesus said, I've come that you might have life and have it more abundantly. The 1st part of that scripture says the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. So, you know, if something is stealing our joy or killing
4:59 our vibe, our happiness, then that is not from God. And I really believe God didn't put us on this earth just to survive it. He meant for us to enjoy. It's, Ephesians 3
5:11 20 says the exceedingly abundantly. So I believe that has to do with our lives. So I wrote that book. I love that book as well. That has a lot of my personal stories in it. It's filled with my personal stories.
5:22 And, I think a lot of it's funny and it's it's enjoyable because it's my life and everybody knows life isn't perfect. But, I use our little funny things that happened to us and I
5:34 just kinda put it into a book form. And, it's just about I think far too many of us are just kinda doing life and not being a part of life. And, I just I kinda
5:46 wanted to give people a different perspective of life based on God's word.
5:51 Well and you I know you speak. You travel. What are some of the things when you go to speak for a women's group or a conference or what? What are some of the things that you hear from the people that you connect with
6:03 about what they're dealing with or what their challenges are?
6:07 A lot of them are, you know, tomorrow morning, I will go when as we're filming this, I will be somewhere for a mastermind for business, a group of entrepreneur women that are highly
6:19 successful. And 1 of their biggest things they want me to talk about is identity. Here they had these successful businesses and, you know, just who I who am I? You know, I I think
6:31 I know who I am, so this is big when I get asked a lot, but but I don't know. You know, I got a past. I got a lot of mistakes. I failed a lot, and it's kind of a universal feeling. And so I will
6:43 just reiterate who God says they are with some practical business with faith tied in. So I I love talking about that. I love talking about, you know, just bringing the scripture alive to people. I love giving
6:55 hope. You mentioned it's kinda generational. When I listen to my dad, I have a John John and Dodiocene legacy channel that I put up on YouTube, and I listen to his sermons every week. And I realized, you know what? This
7:06 is where I got this from. He he was he's just he was inspirational, but all all based on God's word. And, he was encouraging. He was saying those
7:17 declarations back when they called it confessions, remember?
7:20 That's right.
7:21 So, you know, that's where I get it from. And he he used to have this saying, I think people should leave church feeling better than when they came in. Sure, you're gonna be challenged, but, you know, you should feel
7:33 uplifted, but challenged. And so that's kind of what I like to do when I speak just to bring the good news of the gospel, which should challenge us to go to deeper depths with God and higher
Books, Identity & Family Legacy
7:45 levels with him. So that's that's just a little bit of me and what I I'm all about.
7:50 Okay. So, April, 1 of the things that, you know, is I know near and dear to your heart is you're being a mom and talking to talking to moms and, obviously, talking to businesswomen that are moms. What are some of the
7:59 things that you try to leave them with?
8:04 Well, I I like to I like to talk about being the CEO, the chief executive officer of your own life, and that basically is your attitude.
8:16 What kind of attitude are you bringing to the day? It's talking about finding your happy. I always do that. You know, sometimes you really have to search for happy. You gotta search for peace and you gotta even the Bible
8:26 says search. You gotta find your happy bit. I believe happiness is a choice. Happiness is an inside job, and joy and happiness are different. I know that, but I also think you can have joy
8:39 and your face can show it. You can be happy. So I I talk about, you know, just bringing that happiness into life. John Lennon, I think said this. He said, my mom
8:50 told me that happiness was the key to life. So when I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They said, you don't understand the assignment. I
9:02 said, you don't understand life. And I love that from him because happiness is a choice. We get to to decide every single day how we're gonna show up for life. Are we gonna show up grumpy or we're gonna show up happy? We
9:14 all get the same 24 hours in in each and every day. And so 1 reason I wrote this devotional is I'm setting my mind. A mindset simply means it's mind to set. I'm setting my mind. I'm gonna have a good day. I
9:26 know I have a lot going on at work today. I know my family may be kinda chaotic at home, but I am setting my mind on God's word that says, the joy of the Lord is my strength. This is the day that the Lord has made.
9:38 I will rejoice. That's kind of a command. Today's God's day. I am gonna rejoice. I'm gonna rejoice no matter what's comes my way. I'm not gonna fall to pieces in a crisis. I think the
9:50 message Bible says this, if you fall to pieces in a crisis, there wasn't much to you in the 1st place. So I love that scripture. We just gotta have this foundation on the inside of us that says, you know what? I'm built
10:01 for pressure. I can do this. I was built for hard things, and I'm gonna gonna I'm gonna enjoy this journey every step of the way. Sure. I'm gonna have challenges, but, you know, God's with me every step of the way. So
10:12 that's I just kinda try to encourage people with that.
10:15 Now I know you you host your own podcast. Talk a little bit about because I wanna give you a plug for that. Talk a little bit about what what are some of the topics. What what do you cover on there for people to
10:24 subscribe? We want them to subscribe to any of our guests that have podcasts, certainly.
10:28 Definitely. I have a YouTube channel, and it's just by my name, April Austin Salmons. Also, the Better Life Podcast on all podcast platforms. Episode,
10:40 6 reasons you're doing better than you think. That's a really good 1. It's just really stopping to show us that, hey. Life isn't that bad. Mhmm.
10:48 It might Okay. So give us a reason. Give us a reason.
10:51 You know, I I 1 of them was, you don't react the way that you used to. Things used to upset you, but now you kinda sit back a little bit and you wait, you take a deep breath and you
11:03 respond. 1 is you start noticing what's around you, what you do have instead of what you're missing. So I just go through 6 things. I really thought about it, and I thought, you know, if we really
11:15 look at our life, even though sometimes we wanna focus on that 1 bad thing, there's so many good things that are sprinkled around our life that we can be grateful for. And it's sometimes, you know, not not
11:26 sometimes, but if you look in scripture, David was always encouraging himself in the Lord. Always, always, always. So that episode was basically, hey, be encouraged. Your your life, you may feel like
11:38 it's falling apart, but really it's not. You're doing better than you think. I did 1 also on, religion is harsh. God is not. And I get a lot of email from people saying, you know,
11:50 just what what I've said previously that I don't think God can use me this way. I don't think he still has plan a for my life. You know, religion has told me this and I just kinda
12:02 I just kinda go by the word and just say what God says about them and, kind of clear that up. So I'll do things like that. And then once a month, I give a bonus video that, I just did 1 on,
12:14 declaring this over your mind and your thoughts. And it's about an 11 minute just to play while you're getting ready in the morning, just to encourage your mind.
12:21 Love that.
12:21 It's declarations, and it's a prayer. So I just try to do you know, people send me ideas, and I try to just kinda do that kind of stuff. So Well,
12:30 and if you are, our listeners and our viewers, if you subscribe to the GEB America channel, so go search GEB Network on YouTube, we have shared a couple of her videos there, that you can
12:42 check out, under the post. So, we always try to, if we see stuff that we were like, wow, that's encouraging. We wanna share that out. And so for our listeners also, for our viewers and listeners, if you check the
12:54 show notes of this, you're gonna see a link there to April's web website as well as information on the book and then details on her, how do you can find her channel and her podcast as well. So I I think that,
13:06 1 of the things that you and I had talked to I talked a little bit about in season 2 was, just and you mentioned it here briefly, was this idea that you have to search for joy, that you have
13:18 to you have to make an effort, that it doesn't really come looking for you. Because I think we live in such a challenging and fallen world that, you know, it seems like like that the negative is around us already. We
Choose Happiness & Complaint Fast
13:30 wake up, and we put our feet on the ground, and we can immediately say, my knees hurt, you know, or whatever. So I think that, I think that's so important. What what would you say to somebody? They're like, well, you
13:41 know, I I love the devotional. I need to get it. But today, what's something that I could take with me when I'm listening to this podcast?
13:50 Today, you know, I think a good challenge for all of us is, so so we say so the scripture says, this is the day the lord has made. I will rejoice. Well, part of that is you gotta
14:02 put effort into it. It doesn't mean it's gonna automatically fall on you. It's a decision you make and then something that steals your joy. Joy, Dave, I believe is complaining. So this might be the practical side of it.
14:12 Today, I'm not gonna complain because complaining Today. I'm not gonna complain because complaining is draining. So maybe when I complain, it's stealing my joy. So it's just a challenge
14:24 today. I have a lot of reasons to complain because, you know, I've got a lot on my plate, blah blah blah. I'm I'm saying this in general, but I'm gonna choose not to complain today. That means I'm gonna have to zip up
14:35 zip up my lips sometimes, and I'm gonna have to just be quiet. But I would challenge anybody. Go go without complaining for maybe 7 days. See what it does for your life. Yeah. You're gonna
14:47 see a lot of your, lot of that stuff exit, and you're gonna start noticing joy more. So I I think it's putting the biblical with the practical, and
14:59 it just makes life better.
15:01 So it's it's a complaint fast.
15:04 Yes. That's a good 1.
15:06 Can you go 7 7 days and not complain? And then how are you gonna feel? You know?
15:10 And it you know, especially if you're a mom or dad or grandparent, whatever, your kids, your family's gonna notice when you stop complaining. Your family's gonna notice when you got it you get a positive
15:28 manifestations, affirmations, all that kind of stuff. I get it. Positivity has to do with the Bible. Meaning Yes. You know, we're gonna quote God's word. We're not gonna say everything that we're not. We're gonna say
15:39 everything that God says we are. We're not gonna focus on what we currently see. We're gonna focus on what God has already said. So, again, it's that mindset shift and,
15:51 your kids are gonna notice. Make your house make it fun for your kids. Make it a complain free zone. And Yeah. You know, you can really you can really your environment is everything. And the scripture says,
16:03 a wise woman builds her house. The foolish 1 tears it down by her own efforts. So if you're a man, you could say a wise person built.
16:11 Mhmm.
16:12 So we could stop right there. Are we building, or are we tearing down? So just making it practical.
16:18 Well, it's kind of that age old, you know, narrative idea that people that are negative are like crabs in a bucket. Right? They're reaching up and they're grabbing. Yes. And they're all trying to climb out, but they keep
16:27 pulling each other down.
16:28 Yes.
16:29 There's always those people in life that when they see you being positive, they feel like they need to they need to pop your balloon. Like, because it's they're in misery. Misery loves company. Right? I'm gonna bring you
16:38 into my space. And Yes. And I think too that sometimes you just I had a I went to a business conference once, and 1 of the speakers, he made a statement. He said, some of you need to delete some people out of your
16:49 contacts Oh. In your phone.
16:51 Can I
16:52 Because they are the kind of people that they don't build you up? All they do when you when you talk about what you're going for, they tell you all the 5 reasons why it won't
17:00 work. Yep.
17:00 And so it's important to be careful who you surround yourself with.
17:04 Exactly. Hang around 9 negative people, and you'll you will more than likely become the 10th. Mhmm. There's a saying, if you hang out with chickens, you're gonna click. If you hang out with eagles, you're gonna
17:16 soar. So find your eagles and, you know, I don't think we realize how important that is. You gotta find those people that build, those people that challenge you, those people
17:27 that speak into your life. And, you know, Dave, I I just did an episode on this. It's okay to make boundaries. And sometimes that term is a little overused, but I like to say it like this.
17:39 Just because you make a boundary, it doesn't mean you you have to make an announcement about the boundary that you made. You can quietly excuse yourself from a conversation. Like, I wanna hang around toxic con
17:51 conversations, negative conversations. It just doesn't sit well with me. But I don't stop everybody and say, wait a minute. I'm exiting this. I just kinda remove myself. You can be kind about it. You can be respectful.
18:04 But you're in charge of you. You're in charge of your space. Just like you wouldn't want your kid around people that were bullying them or speaking down to them. Don't allow yourself to be spoken
Podcast, Positivity & Boundaries
18:16 down to and given a circle of people who are thriving and not just, you know, complaining about everything. It it will change your world.
18:25 So good. So what what I would love to know, maybe some people have wondered this as well, is is the idea of being positive and and really, like, you talked about those declarations or what your dad called confessions. We
18:36 kinda all kinda well, growing up in the church, we heard that you and nowadays, a lot of people in the world, like you said, they call it manifesting or whatever. Yeah. But speaking positive things over you. Is that
18:45 something that was taught by your parents very young? Because, obviously, it seems like extending to the rest of your family or brothers, everybody there's there's definitely a a positive thread.
18:56 Yeah. Definitely. Definitely. We're just we're just all kinda wired that way, and I think it's it we do attribute that to my parents because they they were, I always say far
19:08 from perfect, obviously, but just very life speaking. My dad could come look at you and pull gifts and talents out of you that you never thought existed. I think about, you know, growing up, he had me on the platform in
19:19 front of 8000 people at 14, 15, and 16. I was petrified. But he was trying to pull out that speaker in me, and he was trying to Yes. Pull out those giftings and talents, and they just had a way of
19:31 speaking life and it it I'm so grateful. I am so grateful that I had the upbringing that I had and the parents that I had and, it taught me a lot. It taught me to look on the bright side of life. It taught me
19:43 to appreciate what I have and be grateful for what I have. And you gotta remember my dad grew up in the depression. He had me later in life and and, had a rough childhood. They didn't have anything. They stood in
19:55 line for food. And, he just determined at an early age that he wasn't gonna live that way anymore. Yeah. Curse of poverty. And I think that really when you grow up like that,
20:07 it just switches something in your mind and you just Yeah. It's he set us up for generational blessings, meaning in every area of our life, just life positivity and, you know, and
20:19 God. That's the most important thing, having that relationship with God.
20:23 Well and, you know, like you said, coming out of the depression, he could have used that as a as a crutch. But, like, even when he started the church, when he started Lakewood, I mean, it started from such humble
20:33 beginnings, you know, in in Yeah. I I what I believe, was it at a feed store that Yes. In the original church? You know? They could gather a bunch of people together and preach to him. You know?
20:43 Yeah. You know, what's interesting is, my dad died when he was 77 and 99. And the last service he was there, he 8200 people packed auditorium. He pulled me out into
20:55 this back room, closed the door, looked at me right in the eyes, and he said, this is I gotta set it up. 60 plus years of ministry, but Lakewood had been around. I don't even know how many years. And he said to me,
21:07 April, can you believe how many people came to church today? And I'll never forget that because I thought he was still in awe of God. He was still so grateful. He didn't take it for granted
21:19 that those people came every week. He felt that responsibility on him to preach the word. And, that that was just a real impactful moment in my life because it taught me just
21:31 to keep, God the center, but keep noticing those those small miracles, those big miracles along the way. It's not always a big miracle. Sometimes it is a miracle
21:43 that, hey. God, thank you that I woke up this morning. God, thank you that, you know, I have a roof over my head. So I love that about my dad.
21:52 Well and I think that you have, you've been able to continue kind of that just in such a great way to the the idea of in in your communication style, obviously, and in your way, because God's
22:04 given you different giftings, is to bring a message of hope, like you say, being a hope coach and sharing with people that, yeah, like, nobody's saying it's not rough. Nobody's saying life doesn't have challenges.
22:14 Nobody's saying we all don't go through them, but it's how you choose to react to it. And if you if you keep God the center, if you start each day I know a lot of people like to end the day with devotion,
22:26 and that's not a bad thing either. Would you say your devotional can work morning or night?
22:31 Yes. It really can. It just work. Just get God in your life. Get it you know, get a little encouragement in your life. It doesn't matter when. I kinda wrote it for the morning, but it doesn't mean you can't use it
22:41 anytime of the day. It's just Yeah. It's just to get moments with God.
22:45 It's kinda like when you're taking a medicine, they say if you miss a miss a dose, just skip it. Don't skip the devotion.
22:50 Right.
22:51 They do.
22:51 Ahead and
22:51 do it that evening. Go ahead and do it on your lunch break.
22:54 Right. It's a little shot of hope for your day. So that's I love it. That's what I wanna do.
22:58 It's a jump start.
