- 49Why We Need the Whole BibleThere are 66 books in the Bible so we can be tempted to approach the Word as a compilation of many different books. We can read the same books over and over again and purposefully neglect others. However, the Bible tells one story, and when we don’t read the whole Bible, we actually miss out on parts of the story! There are many benefits to reading the whole Bible, but there are also some barriers. We discuss all of this today, and we also extend an invitation to a special Bible reading challenge for 2020! - 50Our Eating Habits and the Gospel with Asheritah CiuciuHealth and diet goals. How do you view and relate to food? The world has a lot to say on this topic! We are joined by Asheritah Ciuciu, and she reminds us that the gospel truly does impact every area of our lives: even the way we view and relate to food. She shares her personal battles with food and how the gospel does lead to true freedom. Because the truth is, the real issue may not be food but idolatry! - 51Personal Goals and the GospelResolutions and goals are popular, but are they self-promoting? Should Christians participate in goal-setting? There are pitfalls to setting personal goals, but we believe there are many dangers of NOT setting goals. Goals can help us use our time, talents, and resources to love God and others. Goals can help us be intentional. Goals can help us make the most of the time we have. Goals can help us meet our ultimate aim of glorifying God in everything we do! - 52Being Married to an Unbeliever with Sheila DougalBeing married to an unbelieving spouse is a reality of so many. It’s been Sheila’s reality for 26 years and counting. Today, she graciously answers the tough questions like, “Have you thought about leaving the marriage?” and “What does submission look like?” She points us to God’s Word, which speaks directly to this topic and shares how the local church can come alongside people in these situations. - 53The Truth about GossipGossip. We’ve all experienced it; we can all agree that it’s unkind. But do we really understand the ramifications of gossip? Gossiping is saying what you don’t need to say, whether or not it’s true. It is always harmful and never helpful. It is unloving. And the most important truth about gossip is this: gossip is sin. Yet, we justify gossip for many reasons. Maybe we call it “seeking counsel” or “asking for prayer”. Is it even possible to not gossip? - 54Comparing Our Spiritual GiftsHave you ever thought, “I wish I could teach the Bible like she does” or “Why didn’t God give me a voice like that to lead worship”? Unhealthy comparison can come up in many ways regarding our spiritual gifts and abilities. But did you know that spiritual gifts are sovereignly given by God to each believer for the good of the body? The diversity of gifts and abilities within the church is something that unites and strengthens the body! We need each other! - 55Hope in Suffering with Katherine and Jay WolfA massive stroke at 26-years old. Their world turned upside down. One minute they thought they were headed toward a certain future: Jay would graduate law school in 3-weeks, and Katherine would continue her pursuit of acting/modeling while caring for their 6-month old son. The next minute, Katherine is in a risky surgery that required the removal of half of her cerebellum. Though their story is one of overwhelming loss, it’s also one of overwhelming love. It’s a story where the living hope of Christ anchors and heals. It’s a story of redemption. - 56Praying ScripturePrayer is how we experience intimacy with God, but many of us struggle to pray. We pray sporadically throughout the day, but our prayers lack depth. We feel like we don’t have the words; maybe we lack desire. What can we do? Praying Scripture is a beautiful way to deepen our prayer lives. It keeps our prayers from being self-centered; it helps us understand and apply Scripture. Though our prayers are personal, we aren’t confined to our own words. God invites us to pray His words back to Him! - 58When Church Hurts with Jana WhiteChurch hurt is real. It’s real pain and heartache. Why does it even happen? Though we love the local church, we also know that it is made up of redeemed sinners. This opens up the possibility for fellow believers to hurt one another. Sin is devastating! Jana White shares her personal story of church hurt, and she talks about the healing process. She offers encouragement to those who have experienced this type of pain and also offers thoughts on how the church can come alongside those who are hurting. - 59The Beauty of Daily DependenceOur culture values independence and strength. We also find ourselves living out of our own strength so often. We know we should “depend on God”, but what does that look like practically? We have to remember that God is self-sufficient. He is dependent on nothing and no one. And truly, this is good news for us! In fact, He created us to be dependent on Him. There is beauty in daily dependence on God and His church! - 61Freedom from “What If?”What if the worst case scenario happens? What if our family contracts COVID-19? What if the lump is cancer? What if I lose my job? How do we walk by faith in the midst of life’s many “what if’s”? We believe the gospel offers us freedom from living with the “what if’s” ever before us. Sometimes, tragedy does strike. Our world may experience a pandemic. But God’s people respond, not in fear, but in faith. We look back to God’s past faithfulness, and we look forward to His future faithfulness. We are not “what if” people; we are “even if” people. - 62Why Should We Forgive Others?Do we forgive others for our good or the good of others? Is it for our own peace of mind or is it to foster peace with others? What does God’s Word have to say regarding the “why” behind forgiveness between people? God’s people are compelled by His love, grace, and forgiveness to extend love, grace, and forgiveness to others. It is a mark of a believer to have an ongoing attitude of forgiveness. But this doesn’t mean it’s easy: we need God’s help! - 65Is God Really Trustworthy?Has anyone ever told you to “trust God”? The assumption behind that phrase is that God is trustworthy. But how can we know that He will make good on His promises? Can we really trust that He will be faithful and work all things for our good? We can find ourselves asking these questions especially in times of suffering. We can trust God because He is a covenant-making and covenant-keeping God. Covenants show us how God relates to us, and why we can have a sure and confident hope in Jesus. - 70How to Prevent Burnout as a BelieverOn today’s episode, we talk about burnout. This is something that many of us have faced, are facing, or dread we will face in the future. Burnout is a state of chronic stress. It can be described as feeling exhausted, stressed, overwhelmed, spent, and just plain done. It can come up in many different ways and in many different contexts, and it’s something any personality type can experience. But here’s the thing: our theology has direct implications to how we navigate this issue of burnout. In this episode, we explore what Scripture says about who God is and who we are in light of Him, and we discuss how those truths impact how we live. Believers don’t have to live in a state of burnout! We can go to God’s Word and see how He has designed His people to live on this side of glory. The Bible helps us live this Christian life by helping us establish a good pace; offering true nourishment; building endurance; and leading to true rest. We can prevent burnout and finish our race well. Come join our conversation! - 71How Can We Overcome Burnout? On today’s bonus episode, we get really practical. In Episode 67, we discussed what burn out is and offered preventative measures to avoid burnout. However, we realize that many of us are currently in a state of burnout! So then the question is: what practical steps can we take to overcome this state of chronic stress? In this short bonus episode, we discuss how incorporating rhythms of confession is important for all of us. If we’re in a state of burnout, we need to start by confessing that we’ve been living out of our own strength! Then we can take practical steps to respect God’s good limits for us. We need to intentionally yield to God’s design of tending to our physical needs, which means we need to consider the very real aspects of diet, exercise, and sleep. We pray this episode and its practical content is helpful to those currently in burnout. Disclaimer: many symptoms of burnout mimic symptoms related to anxiety and depression. It is important to note that clinical anxiety and depression are not synonymous to burnout. Please consult a biblical counselor in your area for additional help, if needed. - 72Walking Through Seasons of Spiritual DrynessOn today’s episode, we talk about the times in our spiritual lives where we feel like we’re in a drought. Maybe God’s presence feels withdrawn. Maybe we don’t find delight in reading and studying His Word. Maybe we don’t feel passionate about God and the things of God like we once did. We may wonder: why do we experience these times of spiritual dryness? Is it an indicator of a lack of faith or is it something all believers go through at some point on their faith journeys? Today, we talk all about spiritual dryness. We discuss the various reasons we can experience these seasons, and how we can faithfully walk through them.
