  1. 337RizpahRizpah watched as her sons were hoisted onto the trees and left to die. She watched helplessly as they each breathed their last breath, innocent victims of the sins of their father. When nightfall came, she assumed someone would come remove them from the crosses. But no one came. Rizpah took sackcloth and laid it on the rock in front of the bodies, then she stood guard over the bodies, keeping the birds away during the day and the wild beasts during the night. For five months Rizpah camped out on that hill, watching as their bodies slowly decayed. She remained vigilantly by their sides, though the stench had to be overwhelming. His physicians prescribed a treatment that to us sounds strange, but was an accepted medical practice at the time.The doctors said to find a young virgin to care for the king and to lie in bed with him to keep him warm.   4. 340Two Harlot MothersTwo harlot women came to King Solomon with a problem. They’d each had sons within a few days of each other. One of them smothered to death her baby when she rolled over on him. When she realized what had happened, she went into the other woman’s room and swapped babies. The other woman woke up to find a dead baby. Only it wasn’t her baby. Unfortunately, she couldn’t prove it.The innocent mother hoped King Solomon could get the other woman to return her baby. She pleaded her case, then the other woman denied her claims.   6. 342Wives of SolomonSolomon’s wealth and wisdom were unsurpassed. He had everything he could possibly desire, yet it wasn’t enough. He wanted more. In addition to the daughter of Pharaoh, he married Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, women from lands where the Israelites were forbidden to intermarry because of their pagan worship. Altogether, Solomon ended up with 700 wives and 300 concubines.Have you blessed by All God's Women? Whoever wanted to be a priest, he consecrated, and he became one of the priests of the high places where they worshipped their idols. Then his son Abijah got sick.Since Jeroboam wasn’t exactly on the best of terms with God’s prophets, he told his wife to disguise herself and go to Shiloh to seek advice from the prophet Ahijah.   13. 349Mary and JosephMary visited with Elizabeth and Zacharias for three months, then returned home. In the meantime, Joseph found out about Mary’s pregnacy and prepared to privately put her away, but God came to him in a dream and let him know that the baby was conceived by the Holy Spirit. He reminded Joseph of Isaiah’s prophecy of a virgin bearing a son. Depending on how you interpret that, she could have been eighty-four years old. Or, she could have been eighty-four plus seven plus however old she was before she got married. In other words, over one hundred. However you interpret it, she was no spring chicken. But then the drought causes the brook to dry up. God directed Elijah to head to Zarephath, which was in Sidon, Jezebel’s homeland.   17. 353Widow of Zarephath and Her SonThough Elijah came to Sidon, and God provided for the widow of Zarephath and her son, their problems were not yet over.The widow’s young son suddenly got sick and died. The poor mother blamed herself. She asked Elijah if he came to them just so that she might be made aware of her sin and watch her son die in response to her sinfulness.  He responded by carrying the young lad to his room and praying over him. Three times he pleaded to the Lord, begging for God to bring the young boy back to life.   19. 355Jezebel and Naboth's VineyardKing Ahab discovered a beautiful vineyard adjacent to his palace property. He tried to buy the land, but Naboth, the vineyard owner wasn’t interested in selling. So Ahab went home and had a pity party. Jezebel wanted to know what was bothering him. When she heard what he wanted, she told him she’d get him his vineyard. She sent out letters in Ahab’s name, lined up scoundrels to bear false witness against Naboth, and had him stoned to death. Her husband had been a godly man, studying in the prophecy school with Elisha, but he’d died, leaving behind a large debt. Struggling to take care of her young sons in the midst of her grief, her troubles were compounded when the debt collector came knocking on her door, threatening to take away her sons and turn them into slaves if she couldn’t repay the debt right away.   21. 357Elisha and the Shunammite WomanImmediately following the story of the prophet’s widow in 2 Kings 4 is the story of the Shunammite woman.The prophet Elisha traveled from city to city, serving and teaching wherever he went. As part of his journeys he would pass through the city of Shenum. A wealthy Shunemmite woman saw him passing through town and invited him in for a meal. From there, it became his custom to stop and eat with the woman and her husband. They brought back captives including a young girl who was taken into the household of Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria. She was assigned to serve Naaman’s wife. Though Naaman was a mighty and honorable man, he had leprosy.
