Election Results and Staffing Changes at the White House 0:01 From the heart of our nation's capital in Washington, DC, bringing compelling interviews, insightful analysis, taking you beyond the headlines and sound bites into conversations with our nation's leaders and0:12 newsmakers, all from a biblical worldview. Sitting in for Tony is today's host, Jody Heiss.0:19 The economy is doing well except for yesterday because of the, vote. What is your message for Iran? We've beaten Iran. We are doing very well with Iran.0:31 We're talking to Iran. We have been. We haven't lost a soldier in seven months or six months. We have the almost straight opening doing more business than they've ever done with oil, I was0:43 doing very well, and we are dropping to a lot.0:48 That was president Trump earlier today speaking to reporters about the economy and the war with Iran. Welcome to this November sixth edition of Washington Watch. I'm your Friday1:00 host, Jody Heise. Thank you so much for joining us today. Coming up on today's program, president Trump says a decision on the Iran war is coming1:12 soon. So will that mean a return to military strikes, or will negotiations continue in hopes of reaching some sort of peace deal? Doctor David Warmser will join us shortly1:24 to break all of that down for us. Plus, pro life ballot measures face some significant setbacks this week in the midterm elections. Ryan Bangert, senior vice
1:36 president and special counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, will be joining us to discuss what's next for the pro life movement. And speaking of ballot measures,
1:48 voters in several states rejected proposals to expand gambling. So what does all this mean about public attitudes towards gambling? Well,
1:59 Jeanne Seaver, founder and president of Moms Against Gambling, will be joining us to discuss all those results and what it could mean going forward on the gambling issue.
2:11 Then doctor David Clawson, director of the Center for Biblical Worldview here at the Family Research Council, will join us to break down this week's top headlines from a biblical perspective. And we've got a lot
2:23 to break down. So all that and much more is coming your way straight ahead on this edition of Washington Watch.
2:36 We begin today with news from the White House where results of the midterm elections are already bringing some changes. President Trump announced today that he is promoting
2:47 deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, to become his new chief of staff. And the current chief, Susie Wiles, will move over to lead his political operation. Here's what president
2:59 Trump said about his decision earlier today at the White House.
3:04 I just wanted to make a change. I think Susie's done a very good job, great job, but I just wanted to make it. Steven's been great, and, we
3:16 gotta make we gotta make move.
3:19 Stephen Miller has been one of the key architects of Trump's policies. The president says the changes are gonna be taking place this coming Monday. And speaking of the midterm
3:31 results, votes are still being counted, but Democrats currently lead Republicans two fifty three to one sixty one in the
3:43 house. And, if that's not enough, there are still twenty one races that are too too close to call. So no doubt those numbers that I just shared will certainly be
3:55 changing. And on the senate side, the numbers remain unchanged from what you probably have heard most recently. There are still races in Alaska and Mississippi that are undecided. But in the senate,
4:06 Democrats currently hold the advantage with fifty four seats compared to forty four for Republicans. I don't have to tell you. Things have changed in America. And
4:18 having the authority to govern versus having the wisdom to govern well are two totally different things. Whatever you do, friends,
4:30 whatever you do, don't stop praying for America. We desperately need a spiritual awakening. Well, on the economic front,
4:42 there's some good news. US job growth picked up in October with a hundred and sixty five thousand jobs that were added. Unemployment dropped to four point one percent. This
4:54 would certainly suggest that the job market is bouncing back after slowing down over the summer. And this is what Kevin Hassett, the director of the White House, National Economic Council had
5:06 to say about today's report.
5:08 We had the jobs opening stated to say there are a lot of jobs openings and also that the quit rate went up, which means that people are so confident that if they leave their job, they're gonna get a better job, that
5:19 they're even quitting. And now we have a jobs report that was way more than double, expectation, and the upper divisions were ginormous for the last couple of months. And so what we've got is a job market that's hitting
5:31 it all cylinders.
5:33 The labor department also reported that eighty four thousand more jobs were added in August and September than were originally estimated. Job openings are also rising, while
5:45 layoffs remain low. So So you put all of this together, and it would certainly suggest the job market is heating up, but economists and Fed officials say it's not a major concern for inflation,
5:57 at least not just yet. So let's turn now to our first guest, and I want us to discuss what's ahead for the Middle East. As we all know, so much changed
Iran Policy and the Path Forward
6:09 following Tuesday's elections, and included in that certainly is foreign policy and foreign issues, in particular, Iran and Israel. Yesterday, president Trump said he would prefer not to
6:21 inflict further destruction on Iran, but he has certainly left the possibility for renewed military action open. He told reporters, you'll know soon enough.
6:33 Well, meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue over Iran's nuclear program. So can the Trump administration secure an agreement that addresses the threat here, or
6:45 is the region headed toward another round of fighting? Well, joining us now to discuss this and more is doctor David Warmcher. He's a senior analyst for Middle East affairs at the Center for Security Policy.
6:57 Doctor Warmzer has served as an advisor and consultant on Middle East on, for a number of different offices in our federal government. Doctor Warmzer, welcome back to Washington Watts. It's
7:09 always good to have you.
7:11 It's good to be here and an honor.
7:14 Well, let's talk about president Trump says a decision on Iran is coming soon. How do you read that?
7:23 Well, I think there's a number of vectors that sort of lead to a decision point. One is, first of all, that obviously the president has a lot more latitude now than he does in two or three months. The
7:35 second thing is that the Israeli government has a lot more latitude in the next... Now than it will in two or three weeks, because they've had elections too and the prime minister did not win. He didn't
7:46 lose entirely. It's unclear who will rule Israel afterwards. So he's... But in the meantime, he is a caretaker government and caretaker governments have authority, if not some political
7:58 problems with it, but he has authority. But in Israel, new government could be stood up within two to three weeks. I doubt it will be, but it could be. So at that point, the window can
8:10 close. The Iranians on the other hand feel quite confident from this. They feel they've defeated president Trump, they've defeated Israel. So their willingness to make a deal is... And,
8:22 especially a deal on our terms is going down and going down fast. So in some ways, vectors are heading toward conflict.
8:31 Yeah. I I was gonna ask you that. So it sounds like diplomatic efforts are probably not going to take place or if they do, it's probably more show than than real substance. So given
8:43 that, what needs to happen to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon?
8:50 Well, they have, some facilities. First of all, Isfahan is not fully taken care of. The second thing is the one that everybody talks about, pickaxe mountain. They've buried a lot of their nuclear assets in
9:02 that mountain, which is highly difficult to penetrate. Now, it's possible we have some weapons to get there, but I would imagine that it would involve something a little bit more involved like
9:14 commando, large scale commando. We're not talking ten or fifteen commandos but much larger. It can be a lot larger issue than, what we've dealt with now to really get at that nuclear program. And the Iranians
9:26 know it which is why they're not giving in. However, it begs the other question, which is there are two paths forward. One is or three paths forward. One is simply to give up.
9:38 We may do that. We may leave, but the Israelis can't. So they're gonna keep at it. The second path is to keep mowing the lawn. Namely, every few months, you take out the entrance to
9:50 that facility. You take out any, supporting activity for that facility and everything else, missiles and so forth. And you sort of keep the Iranian threat at bay, but you have to go back to war every five months,
10:02 six months. Or the third way is to go for the jugular, go go for the final sort of assault that obliterates the the regime, whatever it takes. So we really have those
10:14 three paths. Obviously, the Israelis, especially this government in Israel wants to take the third path. They're not interested in renewing war every six months either. So I I I think that's really
10:26 where we're headed. The Iranians, of course, know that. So... And they know that even the middle path that is mowing the lawn every six months, eventually, we will get tired of it. Maybe the Israelis will even get
10:38 tired of it or miss something, and they'll get away with it. So they are determined to avoid the last path. We really... And and they're willing to go to war short of that to try
10:49 to try to get away with things and to exhaust us.
10:54 So about six weeks to... Is the window for the, some of those options, particularly the last ones you just mentioned. And then with Democrats taking control of congress in January, how
11:06 does the approach to Iran change at that point?
11:09 Well, a number of things. First of all, they will, I'm sure that they will take a very strict line on war powers and deny it and say that the president already used it, doesn't have it, or is already at war and it's run
11:21 out, or that he doesn't even have the authority on the War Powers Act may not be... May not allow him to do anything. So they're going to oppose it. The second thing is they're gonna threaten Israel. The
11:33 Democrats now control both houses. And we've seen before that they are willing to vote to deny Israel weaponry so they can threaten Israel with an embargo if, Israel
11:45 participates in a strike on Iran, which is another form of pressure. But most importantly, the way the Democrats could influence this is the Iranians feel they have
11:56 a light at the end of the tunnel. They have a political alliance in the United States, not only from the Democratic side, but also from an increasing amount of voices on the conservative side. And that
12:08 they feel that they are beginning to beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel for themselves. And that just gives them that shot of adrenaline that when you're talking about destabilizing regimes or at
12:20 least unnerving them to the point where they yield, that unfortunately works against that.
12:27 Alright. So I only about a minute left. So you you brought up Israel. So the election results, what what is that gonna mean for both military and diplomatic support for Israel?
12:39 Well, first of all, the government structure in Israel is is is loose and rickety. It doesn't look unified. The country doesn't look unified. So that's difficult. Now that's a dangerous for you to have because Israel's
12:49 government does have authority. But it is it is certainly a problematic thing in a transition. And the new government coming in, if it is the left, will still see the
13:01 Iranian threat the way, Netanyahu does, but they may be less willing to buck the Democrats in congress and may defer more. So it could it could affect Israel that way, but, unlikely that
13:13 Israel will just walk away from this. That this is an existential threat for them.
13:19 Well, no doubt. But it sounds like it could go either way on this on this side of the, Atlantic in terms of how Washington is gonna respond to Israel. Thank you so much
Pro-Life Movement After Election Setbacks
13:31 for joining us again today, doctor David Wormser from the Center for Security Policy. Always great to see you. Okay. Coming up, we're going to shift gears and look at another issue that
13:42 was widely spoken about in the elections this past Tuesday, and that is the pro life movement. Following Tuesday's elections, things have changed significantly, and we're gonna
13:54 talk about just how and what it may mean going forward. So stay with us.
14:02 One nation under God, America's undeniable foundation of faith.
14:16 Youssef from Family Research Council here in Washington, DC. We're continuing the celebration of two hundred fifty years of our home sweet home by walking the historic streets of our nation's capital today.
14:28 And if you were here walking around with me, you would see the timeless architecture, iconic statues, and solemn memorials that grace this city. All of it designed If
14:41 you look closely, if you seek, you will find that these monuments still whisper to those who listen, that God has been at work in America from the beginning. So for he who has ears, let him hear the
14:53 frozen music of these monuments and buildings because the song sounds something like this. America, America, God shed his grace on thee.
15:05 Consider the Washington Monument, over five hundred feet of stone soaring into the sky, the highest point in Washington, DC. Written at the top of the monument are the words, Laus Deo, Latin
15:17 for praise be to God. So when the sun rises on Washington, DC, our praise rises with it. Head to the White House. Imagine sharing a meal in the state
15:29 dining room. There you will find this prayer from president John Adams carved into the mantle above the fireplace. I pray to heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house. May none but
15:40 honest and wise men ever rule under this roof. At the center of the US Capitol, the home of Congress, eight grand paintings rest in the rotunda. A friar
15:52 holds a cross as Columbus and his crew land in the Americas. Pocahontas is baptized in a Jamestown church in sixteen thirteen. Before crossing the Atlantic, the pilgrims pray over an
16:04 open Bible, The words, God with us, on the sales of their ship. Go to the Jefferson Memorial. Engraved on the wall are these stirring words. Indeed, I tremble for my
16:16 country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever. Walk by the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, and find Moses sculpted into the top of the
16:27 building's east entrance holding the ten commandments. What more can I say? I do not have time to tell about Asbury and Witherspoon, Hamilton and Grant, FDR's D Day prayer, or Lincoln's appeal to
16:39 God. But our nation's story isn't finished. It's still being etched in stone by us so we can make the promise of America real and the idea of America complete. And that
16:51 is our foundation of faith.
17:04 Welcome back to Washington Watch. I'm your Friday host, Jody Heiss. So glad to have you tuning in. Among other things, this past Tuesday's election results have certainly
17:16 left the pro life movement facing some significant political change in the landscape. Now there are absolutely new challenges in the effort to protect
17:28 the unborn. And so what is it going to take to strengthen support for pro life policies? And where can the movement make progress over the next couple of
17:40 years? Well, joining me now to discuss this and more is Ryan Bangert. He's a senior vice president, for strategic initiatives and special counsel to the president at the Alliance
17:52 Defending Freedom. Ryan, welcome back to the program. Good to have you, and let's just start this. The pro life movement, well, it took some pretty significant hits from, Tuesday's
18:03 election results.
18:06 Well, Jody, thanks for having me on. And, yes, there were some definite, negative results that we saw. We... In Missouri, there was an effort to repeal a bad constitutional amendment that had been enacted.
18:18 The previous election cycle, it failed by about ten points. In Nevada, there was an addition to the constitution, adding abortion. And in Virginia, there was a very unfortunate addition to the constitution
18:30 that, effectively allows abortion almost up until the moment of birth. And so so certainly some bad results, but we do also see some bright spots
18:40 too. Well, let's talk about some of those. And, give me some bright spots, and then tell us where, the pro life agenda is going, from here.
18:51 Absolutely. A very, very bright spot indeed was in the state of Idaho. Proposition one passed by over fifty six percent of the vote. And that was a... I'm sorry.
19:03 It failed by fifty six percent of the vote. That was a proposition that was seeking to repeal Idaho's very, very strong protection for fetal life. And this was the second
19:15 time that pro abortion groups have taken a shot at eliminating that protection. They also have a litigation pending right now. ADF is participating in that, helping the Idaho attorney
19:26 general defend Idaho's strong pro life law. But the voters of Idaho resolutely rejected that effort to repeal Idaho's pro life law, by over fifty six percent.
19:38 So, clearly, there are... There's a strong appetite on the part of voters, at least in some states, to recognize the truth that all life should be protected from conception to natural death.
19:50 Yeah. In some states, do you think there's a a a way forward with some of these policies? I mean, what what does the pro life agenda look like going forward, at least from the next couple of years?
20:02 Absolutely. ADF right now, I think, is really on the on the cutting edge of pushing forward, protection for life when it comes to the abortion drug, mifepristone. We've been engaged with the
20:14 Louisiana attorney general, Liz Murrell. She has been helping lead the charge on challenging a policy that was put in place by the Biden administration that made it possible to ship this
20:26 abortion drug mifepristone in the mail anywhere in the country. And that's something that, it not only violates state laws concerning the distribution of this drug, but also endangers women's
20:38 health. And we have been file... We've been suing alongside the attorney general to get that repealed and to put back in place sensible protections that would require an in person doctor's visit and
20:49 and at the same time, allow these pro life states to protect life from this very dangerous drug. So that's something that is in process right now, and we feel very good about that effort because it
21:01 matches the science. And it's something that would make a big difference in protecting life nationwide.
21:08 I know on another aspect of the whole, fight for life right now, ADF has been seeking, to extend some existing free speech protections to, more New York pregnancy
21:20 centers. What... What's the latest on that? That's another big issue in this whole fight.
21:27 Absolutely. Blue State attorneys general have been trying to silence the voices of pro life pregnancy centers. In the case of the New York, the New York case was one, but the New Jersey case was
21:39 another, that we had to take this issue all the way up to the US Supreme Court just last term in first choice. And the US Supreme Court, definitively said that crisis pregnancy centers have
21:50 the right to challenge these abusive subpoenas that would force them to disclose the names and identities of their financial contributors, under the first amendment. And so, there are efforts being made to silence the
22:02 voices of these centers, and, we have had good success so far defending the rights of these pregnancy resource centers to stay open, to continue to raise money, and to do so without being
22:14 harassed through subpoenas and through other kind of legal process by Blue State attorneys general.
22:21 It seems to me that that is a case for sure that could possibly have ramifications that go far and wide. What would a a favorable ruling there?
22:33 What would it mean particularly for, you know, obviously, for the ability of pregnancy centers to discuss abortion pill reversal, with women who... They wanna change their minds. They've taken
22:45 the abortion drug. They they don't want that. So what kind of ramifications do you see with this and the importance of that particular case?
22:55 Well, certainly, Jody. And the good news is at First Choice, that was a victory for the crisis pregnancy center. But as you pointed out, there are states like Colorado that have tried to silence pregnancy resource
23:05 centers and prohibit them from talking about abortion pill reversal, APR treatment, deeming it to be something that's deceptive or improper under state law. And that's just clearly a targeting of efforts
23:17 by pro life groups to save unborn life. And that's something that's in litigation right now. Obviously, that makes a big difference because women should be entitled to hear all
23:29 the facts about the treatments available, and women should be entitled when they are in the process of obtaining this kind of an abortion, when they realize they don't want it, when they realize perhaps they've been
23:39 coerced, like our client, Rosalie Marquesic, was coerced into taking an abortion drug, when they realize that they don't want to take that path, they absolutely have the right to know what options are
23:51 available to them. And trying to silence and muzzle the voices of pro life pregnancy centers who want to offer that hope, is simply unconscionable, and ADF is is fighting that fight right now.
24:02 Well, ADF is on the tip of the spear on so many issues. I just, I go way back in in my personal experience with ADF and just can't say thank you enough in the entire
24:14 organization for all you do. Absolutely spectacular in every way, and we deeply deeply appreciate, what ADF does. And thank you for joining us today. Ryan
24:26 Bangert from Alliance Defending Freedom. Great to see you.
Voter Rejection of Gambling Expansion
24:30 Jody, great to see you.
24:33 Alright. As we look at the results from Tuesday, a lot of people are... You know, it goes far beyond scratching the head. A lot of folks are wiping tears from their eyes and concern. I talked with a gentleman just
24:45 today, deeply, deeply, deeply concerned on so many fronts. Well, god has not forsaken us, and there is some good news, actually, that came out of election on Tuesday. We wanna cover some of that with
24:57 you next, so stick around.
25:06 The family is the oldest, most tested, and most reliable unit of society. It is divinely created and sustained. And yet, there are those who are always tampering with its values and structure.
25:18 That's why we need organizations like the family research council that could effectively defend and strengthen the family.
25:25 Family Research Council began over forty years ago, like all great movements of God, with prayer. Today, rooted in the heart of the nation's capital, FRC continues to
25:37 champion faith, family, and freedom in public policy and the culture from a biblical worldview.
25:44 FRC is one of those bright lights that helps us focus on true north. And I shudder to think had they not been here that it could have been worse, worse, worse.
25:54 The Family Research Council has literally millions of people that follow what they do, and that small army makes a difference. Every time I meet with Tony, he brays for me. That matters. This is a grassroots
26:06 organization. Tony and his team in Washington do a great job, but the power of the FRC is the people.
26:12 It's just a wonderful parachurch church organization that doesn't seek to take the place of the church, but it seeks to assist the family and the church as we try to move forward
26:24 successfully, not in a defensive mode, but in an offensive mode as we seek to live our lives according to the holy scriptures.
26:33 FRC, is not gonna be whooped. You know, we're we're gonna fight. We're gonna take a stand. And, again, we don't retreat.
26:42 To thousands of Americans who love this country and happen to believe the bible as a definitive way to live, we will not be silent. We will not shrink back. We will not apologize for biblical truth. We will
26:53 continue to stand for it.
27:03 Good afternoon, and welcome back to Washington Watch. I'm your Friday host, Jody Heise. Thank you so much for joining us today. I know many of you probably feel
27:15 otherwise, but everything was not bad news on Tuesday in regard to the elections. For example, efforts to legalize more forms of gambling
27:27 hit a roadblock at the ballot box this past week. For example, voters in Nebraska rejected online sports betting. There were communities in Indiana and Virginia that turned
27:39 down proposals for new gambling facilities. But in spite of all of this, the gambling industry, at least reportedly, they're not backing down. Executives are actually seeing opportunities to
27:51 legalize more gambling, and they are looking at that because of some of the newly elected governors and state lawmakers. But given how voters in several states said no to
28:03 the gambling industry, will the incoming political leaders heed that message, or will they make a bad bet? No pun intended. Just had to throw that one in.
28:15 Well, joining us now to discuss this is Jeanne Sievers. She's the founder and president of Moms Against Gambling. Jeanne, great to see you again. Welcome to Washington Watch.
28:25 Hey, Jody. It's great to see you. We miss you down here in Georgia now.
28:30 Well, thank you. But, good to see you right now, and thank you for keeping the torch ablaze on so many fronts. So let's start with this, rejection of voters as it relates to several
28:42 gambling proposals. What's your thoughts on that?
28:46 Well, I think that people are basically waking up finally, Jody. I mean, we've been working hard here specifically in Georgia for over nine years to stop them from legalized gambling right here.
28:58 And our whole goal has been educate, educate, educate, because parents and grandparents are shocked that Georgia has been pushing it, for example, but,
29:10 also, they're surprised that we have, like, eighty four lobbyists at our capital each year. But we have been educating the public, and,
29:23 the stories have been coming out about all the corruption and the harms, and the message that we always like to send is there's no amount of revenue that
29:34 justifies the human tragedy that comes with statewide sponsored gambling. So the... Yes. They had some big victories. Nebraska, the gambling industry
29:46 spent twenty three million to one, and we defeated any kind of... The the gambling push in that state. That is that
29:58 is huge because that's the big thing. You know? It's... They always talk and say, well, let's let the people decide. Well, you let the people decide on a referendum. It's basically fifty
30:09 billion to one, fifty million of the gambling industry will make... Get on advertising in that particular state or county and say, make it sound like it's every... In the best thing since
30:21 sliced bread. But the biggest thing I think that's really parents are catching on is, Jody, I get calls from mothers
30:34 that begging for help. And one in particular recently, one that called me and told me that her best friend's son went down in the basement at his home
30:46 and killed himself with a gun because of his debt in sports betting. Suicide is climbing all over this nation, and I think people
30:58 are finally realizing that the gambling addiction is the worst addiction of any addiction, and and we're all... I think everybody in this country is affected
31:10 by someone that has dealt with an addiction. And now we're seeing more and more children. The gambling industry right now is even targeting our kids on their video games and iPhones,
31:22 encouraging them to go and play the slot machines to get free stuff just to pull them in. So when they legally can, even though we know kids at young as the age of nine are gambling right now.
31:34 So,
31:35 maybe that's......
31:36 Topic a little bit.
31:38 No. That's that's good because they're they're reaching younger and younger and younger age. But the gambling executives, at least reportedly, I mean, they they are looking at this past election in spite of their losses,
31:50 but they look at states like Texas and Georgia, and the leadership changes in those states, and they see an opportunity to perhaps extend their... The gambling reach there.
32:02 So do you expect lawmakers in these states, to pursue legalization despite the fact that you just, brought up that voters rejected so many gambling proposals?
32:14 Oh, absolutely. There's no doubt in our mind, Jody. I mean, our governor elect was actually flying around the state during her campaign funded on a corporate
32:26 jet by the, casino. So there will be a huge push in January to legalize all gambling in our state. I have no
32:38 doubt about it. And that is a really scary thing. And the thing that's so sad about it all is that it preys on the poor. That's who it preys on. And we have to be out
32:50 there, and we have to educate folks and make them aware. And, yes, we're always, always... I know South Carolina, their new governor elect is supportive of gambling.
33:02 I don't think that Alabama's governor is, but, yes, there'll be other governors that will definitely be pushing this, and I've heard it's gonna be the first thing on the agenda. And like I
33:14 said, Jody, how they sell it is it's for the kids. If, you know, they'll sell it. Well, if if we pass gambling, then particularly Georgia, what she campaigned on, it's
33:26 gonna go to fund pre k, fully fund pre k all over the state. So they use the kids.
33:35 We gotta end it right there. I wanna thank you so much for joining us today. Jeanne Seaver, founder and president of Moms Against Gambling and for the incredible work that you, your organization
33:47 have done. We gotta keep vigilant on all these issues. Alright. Stay with us after the break. We'll talk about the election and more from a biblical perspective. So don't go away. We'll be right back
