The Future You Want 0:00 Alright. We're beginning a new series today. Of course, we're actually starting a 40 day challenge called the future you want. And, you know, there is there is the future0:12 or the life that you have, and then there's the life that you want. I mean, there are probably some things about your life0:24 that you're thankful for right now, that you look at and go, yeah, that's pretty good. But there are also probably some areas in your life that you like to see some change in. Would anybody agree with that? Yes. And you0:35 say, this this could change. Maybe you want to be closer with God. Maybe, you you you like to feel better physically. Maybe you like to have peace in your mind or just be happy0:48 again. Maybe you want to have better relationships, maybe a better marriage. Maybe you want your career to be more successful, or you just want to stop worrying about money. I like to call0:59 whatever that is, whatever that you're aiming for, that you would like to see happen in your future, the future you want. And everybody has a future that they want. You know,1:11 here on the board, on the stage here, I have a vision board that we used almost 2 years ago. We encouraged the church to just write out or even create, use pictures,1:23 that would let God know what they wanted him to do for them. And so, we have things on here like individuals saying that they wanted God to help them start1:35 a business. And, some individuals saying I want to have a more intimate relationship with God. Some individuals had some things about their family. I want me and my kids to be happier. I mean, we have an entire board of
1:47 people just, writing out or demonstrating the future they want, and all of us could put something on this board. And Israel understood this
1:59 in the Bible because they were in a place where they had now been forced to move to Babylon. They lost
2:11 their land to the Babylonian Empire, and a number of them lost their lives, but those that didn't were were carried into Babylon.
2:24 And it didn't look like they have much of a future at all. But in Jeremiah 29 11, God said this to them. He said, I know
2:36 what I'm doing. I have it all planned out. Plans to take care of you, not abandon you. Plans to give you the future
2:48 you hope for. So notice that they're in Babylon and things look bad. In fact, Babylon was about 800 miles from from Israel.
3:00 And so it looked like they were never going back. It looked like their future was bleak, and yet God says to them, I have plans for
3:12 you. I've got plans to give you the future that you want, and that was to go back to the land. So I've got plans that... That's gonna lead to you 1 day being in
3:23 your promised land again, 1 day living that promised land life that you want. And the same thing is true for you. You might have found
3:35 yourself in a Babylon of your own. Maybe things look pretty pretty bleak right now. Maybe you feel like, you know, this is it. I find that 1 of the most faith, faithless statements we
3:47 can make nowadays is it is what it is. Because we never say that, like, excited. We never say, well, it is what it is. No. We always say it is what it is. Right? And so you might be looking at your life and saying, man,
3:58 it just is what it is. But I'm here to tell you, the same God that promised to get them out of Babylon and into the future they want is a God that'll get you out of your Babylon and into the future you want.
4:10 He's just that kind of god. You know, and and today, of course, is, opening day for the lions. So a lot of people have football on their mind and and, I was thinking
4:22 about and just reading about a Hall of Fame quarterback named Kurt Warner. I mean, the only thing about Kurt Warner, you know, that he played college football, I think, at Northern ire... Iowa.
4:34 Excuse me. And, he was pretty good player, but when he left college, he was not drafted into the NFL. In fact, he really couldn't get into any pro
4:46 leagues. Nobody really wanted him, but he wanted to be an NFL quarterback. Well, he ended up working at a grocery store. He spent his days working at a
4:58 grocery store, then he would get a few hours of sleep, then he would do some family things, and then he would go practice. He would go work on throwing the football. And I can't... And I can't
5:10 imagine how difficult it must have been to be in that position, but have the dream of being an NFL quarterback. In fact, he says that there were times he kinda wondered, what am I
5:22 doing? But at some point, he got a break. Anybody thinking God for a break sometime soon? Come on now. Gotta give you that break. Right? That's suddenly. He got a break, man, and he ended up playing
5:34 in the Arena Football League and another league and got into the NFL. He was a backup quarterback, and then the starting quarterback went down. And now he's the starting quarterback. He throws from
5:45 41 touchdowns, leads his team to the Super Bowl, becomes Super Bowl MVP, and later on becomes a Hall of Fame quarterback. And he gives God all the glory for it. So
5:57 here's a guy who was in his Babylon, and yet he still saw the future that he wanted. And he didn't give up on God. He didn't give up on that dream, and God
6:09 brought him from being a grocery grocery store worker to being a hall of fame quarterback. That's why I'm telling you today that God cares about you. God knows he still has a future for you. Don't let
6:21 Babylon tell you what your future looks like. Go ahead and believe God for the future you want, and God will get you there. If I look at Psalm 37 verse 4,
God Delights in Blessing You
6:34 Where you are today does not have to be the end of your story. Psalm 37 verse 4 says this, delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the
6:46 desires of your heart. You know, when Israel wanted to go back to the promised land, you know, God wanted that for them too.
6:59 That's why he planned for it. That's why he promised it. Because the future they wanted was the future he wanted for them. And here we can see something similar.
7:11 The Bible says delight in God. That's the most important thing you need to do. We're gonna come back to that. But it then goes on to say, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
7:23 Well, god wouldn't give you the desires of your heart if he didn't want you to have the desires of your heart. You may understand that? Nobody's gonna make god do something he doesn't want to do.
7:35 Nobody negotiated god into a corner, and then he said, alright. Well, I'll give you what you want too. No. It's quite the opposite. God wants you to have the desires of your heart. God wants
7:47 you to have the future that you want. The future you want is the future God wants for you. Because God wants good for you. In fact, turn it up and
7:59 tell them God wants good for you. Turn somebody and tell them God wants good for you. Find 1 more person. Tell them God wants
8:11 good for you. Well, pastor, I'm not sure about that. Let's go to Micah chapter 7 in verse 18. And if you're saying where in the world is Micah? Just look on the screen. We got you.
8:24 Whenever you get to those books, I always think just go to Matthew and go backwards. Micah 7 and verse 18 says this, where is another God like you who pardons the guilt of the remnant
8:36 overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, get this, because you delight in showing unfailing
8:48 love. Now when you study scripture, 1 of the things that can help you is to look for the key word in the scripture. And I believe the key word in this scripture is delight.
9:01 It means here to be pleased with, to desire, is translated elsewhere in the Bible, to have pleasure. This is talking about God.
9:13 Remember, God's not a robot. He has emotions. There are things that he loves and things that he hates. And here, this is telling us there are things he delights in,
9:25 things that actually bring him pleasure. And it says here, what brings him pleasure is when he can show his love to his people. In fact, let's go to a couple
9:37 other scriptures on this. Deuteronomy chapter 30 and verse 9. It says, and the lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in every work of your hand, in
9:49 the fruit of your body, of your cattle, of your land for good. Somebody say good. Get this. For the lord will again delight,
10:01 there it is again, in prospering you as he took delight in, the idea here is prospering your fathers. So there's a 2nd scripture where the Bible talks about God
10:13 delighting and prospering his people. He gets pleasure from it. He he enjoys it. 1 more. Psalm 35 verse 27.
10:29 It says, let them shout for joy. Come on. Somebody shout for joy in this place. Hallelujah. And be glad, that's put a smile
10:41 on your face, that favor my righteous cause. Yeah. Let them say continually, let the Lord be magnified, get this, which have
10:52 pleasure. He doesn't put up with. He has pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. That's the 3rd
11:04 scripture that shows us God has pleasure. He enjoys blessing his people. You know, all of us have some things we really enjoy. Right?
11:16 Maybe it's a favorite food. I love pound cake. And so maybe a month ago, some of our... The the dream team brought in some pound cake. I don't remember what the occasion was, but I'm
11:28 glad they brought in the pound cake. It was good. And then last week, I came to church and I ministered and they... Somebody caught me at the back. They said, Pastor, we brought you some more
11:40 pound cake. Made my day. I went home, tore that up. It was so good. So I wasn't just eating pound cake because I got to eat. There's some foods you
11:51 eat because you got to eat. And then there are some foods that bring you pleasure. That was pound cake for me. Right? You know, it may be you playing a sport brings you pleasure. It might
12:03 be you going to the movies. It might be some hobby that you do. But it's something that you really enjoy. In fact, you enjoy it so much you do it again and again and again. Do you know that's how
12:15 God feels about blessing us? That it brings him pleasure to do good to you. When Jesus was walking about preaching and
12:27 healing, do you know that he was enjoying that? When somebody got... Was was set free from from Satan and became a part of his family that was good to
12:39 Jesus. When when he healed the woman with the issue of blood and now she... She's totally healthy, that was good to Jesus. He said, my meat is to do the will of
12:51 him. That's what brings me enjoyment. God enjoys blessing you with what you want. He enjoys giving you that peace that you're looking for, healing your
13:02 body, opening that door in your career. He enjoys making sure that you're debt free. He enjoys you being able to celebrate him giving you the very things you've asked him for. He gets enjoyment
13:15 from that. He doesn't just do it. He enjoys it. It's fun to him. So what the Bible says in 2nd Chronicles 16 9, the eyes of the Lord
13:26 run to and fro throughout the earth. Why? So God can show himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is right before him. God is like a quarterback in
13:38 football. He's stepping back, looking down the field to see who is open so I can deliver my blessings to them because when he completes that pass, he celebrates, he enjoys
13:50 it. And this isn't that strange to us. You know, I've shared this story before, but I remember when my oldest daughter was was younger, she was
14:01 just, you know, just a little kid, That 1 Christmas, the whole family came together, and it was something she wanted badly for Christmas. And my parents got it for her. And so when we got to my
14:13 parents' house, we made sure she got that gift 1st. She opened it up. She saw what it was, and immediately she started screaming. She said, yeah, and started running around the house with it in the air.
14:25 Yeah. And everybody in the family just started laughing. I mean, it was it was... The whole Christmas was made. And and it wasn't because we got the gift.
14:37 We we were celebrating that she got the gift. Her joy brought us joy. And that's how God is. When you have joy, God enjoys that.
14:49 So he enjoys giving it to you. In fact, we get this. Look at Matthew chapter 7 and verse 7. It says, ask and it will be given you. Seek and you will find. Knock and it will be open to you. For everyone who
15:01 asks receives. He who seeks, find. To him who knocks, it will be open. You you see the heart behind this? God says, I wanna give you the answers. I wanna help you know what's going on. I wanna give you
15:12 what you're asking for. Oh, what man is there among you if... Who if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?
15:24 If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father who is in heaven give good things to those that ask him? In other
15:36 words, as natural parents, we give good things to our children. And as I just finished explaining, as natural parents, we enjoy seeing our children enjoy those things. If we
15:48 can... Are wired that way, how much more God, how much more would would he be willing to give good things to to his children? How much more would he enjoy
16:00 seeing his children get the future they want? In fact, look at John chapter 10. God wants good for you. Turn your head and tell him, God wants good for
16:12 you. Turn to somebody and tell him, God wants good for you. Yeah. He wants good for you. He enjoys when you have good. You
16:24 enjoy. You get what you want. And God's like, oh, that... Good. That's good. I enjoyed that. Let me let me do that some more. That's why the Bible gives us so many
16:36 instructions on how to position ourselves so God can bless us. So many instructions on how to live our lives so we can live a blessed life. And let me be clear
16:48 because the future you want we're talking about is the future that that you want that is right. Okay. Because there are some things you say, well, I want this
16:59 and God like, no. Y'all y'all y'all look at me like, the future I want is all the weed I can handle. Nah. The future I want is so and so is what? Nah.
Jesus Came to Give Abundant Life
17:12 Come on. Future I want is my my my boss just a drop dead. Nah. You need Jesus, brother. Come on now. Now we're talking about the good things we all know that we want that that are... That that God wants for us, and
17:24 God wants those good things for you. Now look at John 10 10. I always gotta make sure that people... They clear on that because they walk out of here. Well, God, he said, God want the future I want. They
17:36 go out and do something stupid. No. John 10 10 says this, the thief cometh not before to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.
17:48 Well, Jesus is talking here and he touches on something that we need to talk about for a minute. Because 1 of the challenges that people have is that they think God is their
18:00 problem. They look at bad things that have happened to them in their lives, and they blame God. In fact, even when you see natural disasters
18:12 happening around the world, you know, the media will call it an act of God. But that's not what the Bible teaches. Jesus in this scripture alone gives us, you know, kind of draws a line
18:24 of delineation between what his enemy, Satan or the devil does and what God does. If you wanna make it very simple, if it's evil, add a d, it's from the
18:35 devil. If it's good, go ahead and get rid of an o. It's from God. God's not making you sick. God's not making you poor. God's not causing somebody to attack you. God's not taking your loved
18:47 ones. God's not doing all of that stuff. He doesn't need to do that to teach you something. He doesn't need to use Satan's weapons to teach you his lessons. No. That's Satan trying to take you
18:59 out. He's trying to give you the future he wants for you, which is 1 where you're suffering and then you die and go to hell. And see, God God understands... Jesus understood that. That's 1 reason why this is in the
19:11 Bible so God can can help you to understand that he wants good for you, not evil. In fact, he goes on to say here, I am come. Anybody glad that Jesus came?
19:23 Here's his mission. Here's why he came. And I'm reading this from the King James version. He says I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly. Now he's talking about his sheep
19:34 here. Those that choose to follow him and... But if this applies to everybody ultimately. That he came so that all of us would not have what the Bible calls spiritual death, where we're separated
19:46 from God and going to hell, but instead would have spiritual life where we're in God and going to heaven. And that's enough to rejoice about. John
19:58 3 16, God so loved the road, he gave his only begotten son that whoever would believe in him would not perish, right, but have everlasting life. And so Jesus, of course, has has paid
20:10 the price. He came so we could go from death to life. We can go from being separated with... From God to being with God. We can go from having a sin nature to God's nature. We can go from being a sinner to being a saint.
20:22 But that's not where the scripture ends. Says I am come that you might have life, and he could have stopped at that, but then he added to that.
20:34 And that they might have it more abundantly. So so we think Jesus came just to forgive
20:46 our sins so that when we die, we can go to heaven. But Jesus didn't just say I came so that when they die, they have life.
20:59 In fact, if you get into some of the other scripture on this, you'll find the Bible teaches that the minute you made Jesus Lord of your life, you have life. If you're somebody that has Jesus, you've got the life. You're
21:10 you're living eternal life right now. No. Jesus didn't just come to change where you go when you die. He came to change how you live while you're alive.
21:23 He didn't just come to save us from hell. He came to give us a good future. He didn't come just so you could exist. He came so you could live. He didn't come to just add years to your life. He came to
21:35 add life to your years. That's what he's talking about when he says, I want you to have life more abundantly. In fact, the New Living Translation said it this way, that these purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.
21:47 My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. He wants you to have a rich and satisfying life. What does that look
21:59 like? That's a future where you have joy in your relationship with God. That's a future where you have health in your body, where you have peace in your mind,
22:11 where you have happiness in your emotions, where you have love in your relationships, where you have success in your careers, where you have plenty plenty of finances. That's the future where you're living in your
22:22 promised land. That's the future you want. And that's what Jesus came to give, not just for you to avoid hell, but for you to start living heaven on earth right
22:34 now. If I look at 3rd John In verse 1, it says, beloved,
22:45 I pray that you may prosper in what? All things. All means all. He's talking about every area of life. He goes on to say here, and be in health, that's 1 of the areas of
22:57 life, just as your soul prospers. So prospering spiritually, prospering physically, prospering in every other area of your life, that's what Jesus came for you to actually be able to
23:09 experience. That's the future you want. Now imagine, speaking of Christmas, imagine giving your child a Christmas gift and they say thank
23:20 you and they take the wrapped gift and they go put it in a closet and they never open it. Would you be happy about that? No. Because you want them to enjoy what's in the
23:32 gift. Right? And that's literally how God is. God is saying, I've given you this gift of life, but there's more to this gift than just you not being able to go to heaven. It's more than a ticket to
23:44 heaven. Actually, I want you to open up the gift of life and enjoy all the benefits that come from having my kind of life. And that is living the
23:56 future that you want. Because he doesn't actually want you going through life suffering. You know, if you were to, let's just say you you got in your car, and you
24:08 filled it up with gas, and maybe you could be excited about that. But if you did that, but then you also had the indicators on your dashboard showing
24:20 that you had an issue with the temperature in the car, that there was an issue with with with with your tire pressure, that you have some other issues. How many know you got a problem? Right? I mean, yeah. Well, I I gotShow more
