The Righteousness of Moses 0:01 Welcome to Awaken to Grace. I'm Chad Roberts and I am so glad that you are joining us today. I believe God has connected us for a great purpose. We are just weeks0:13 away from the national release of my new book, Blind Faith, Seeing God Through Darkness that is being published through our partners at Lifeway. It's0:24 available on Amazon or anywhere that you buy books in any format you prefer. Through this book, we will learn together how to trust a God you can't see.0:36 I hope you'll go right now and preorder your copy of Blind Faith, Seeing God Through Darkness. Alright. Let's go to Hebrews0:48 chapter eleven this morning. Hebrews eleven, I want us to examine verses twenty seven and twenty eight. This morning is session ten1:00 of our exploration of Hebrews chapter eleven. We... If everything stays on track, we'll spend twenty Sundays in chapter eleven,1:12 over seventy Sundays in the book of Hebrews, and we're just going verse upon verse. Isn't this the best way to study the Bible? We are dedicating1:23 three weeks to the study of Moses from Hebrews eleven because there's more content dedicated to the life of Moses in Hebrews1:35 eleven than any other person in the chapter. We saw two weeks ago, we saw the refusal of Moses. Verse twenty1:47 four, he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. We saw two weeks ago, we saw the reward1:59 of Moses. It said that he considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt. And he2:11 was looking to the reward. So we saw his refusal, we saw his reward, and now this morning, I want to look at the righteousness2:22 of Moses. I'm gonna take you today to the end of verse twenty eight, and we're gonna see how the death angel never touched them, never touched the people of God,2:34 because the blood had been applied to them. And we're gonna thread it all together today, and we're gonna see how even with2:46 Abel, who was the first person we looked at in chapter eleven, what made Abel accepted to God, is that he had a blood sacrifice.2:58 What made the way of Cain, as the Bible calls it, what made God reject Cain was that he brought produce, he brought self3:11 righteousness. God rejected Cain, but God accepted Abel. That thread of the blood is going to continue as it's woven to the3:22 story of humanity, and we're gonna see it in a beautiful way, in a special way in our text with Moses today. Verse number twenty3:34 seven, look what it says. By faith, he left Egypt. Now I want you to know in the Greek, this is more emphatic. It doesn't mean that he left in the3:46 sense of he relocated. Okay? It doesn't mean that he found better real estate in another city and just4:00 what it literally means is he forsook Egypt. It means that he deliberately and intentionally walked away from4:12 Egypt. When we saw week before last in his reward, we saw that he considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of4:24 Egypt for he was looking for the reward, to the reward. What did we say the word considerment and the word look fit? It literally means to4:35 weigh a matter. It literally means to consider and weigh an option. Why is that important? Because I want you to know Moses did not make an irrational,4:48 just a rash decision. Moses was not being emotional. Moses was not being patriarch... Patriotic. Moses was not being political,5:00 none of those factors had anything to do with him walking away from Egypt. Why did he do it? Because by faith he chose God and he rejected5:12 the world. So in this scripture in verse twenty seven, when it emphatically says, he forsook Egypt, he left, He walked away. Brothers,5:24 sisters, I wanna ask you today, have you deliberately, have you intentionally left your sin? Have you completely turned your back5:36 on your old life style? Have you completely walked away from old habits and old addictions and old friends? Or are you still trying to serve5:48 Christ in Egypt? You can't. You and I must make a willful, a deliberate, and intentional decision that we are going6:00 to walk away from the world, from carnality, from sin. We cannot be double minded. We cannot have a foot in the church and a6:12 foot in the world. We must choose this day. Who will you serve? And what did Joshua say? As for me and my house, we will serve6:24 the Lord. Amen? He left. He forsook. He walked away from Egypt, not being afraid of6:36 the anger of the king. I love that phrase. Oh, the courage of Moses. Remember we talked about his parents, Am Am,6:48 Amrad and, Jochebed? The courage that they had. They weren't afraid of the king's edict, Hebrews eleven says. And now7:00 here we see Moses later in his life around the age of eighty, not afraid of the King. Now there's a bit of a contradiction at face value7:12 here. If you only look at the surface, it looks like a contradiction because we know in Exodus chapter three, when Moses murders the7:23 Egyptian task master, master. He murders the task master, and the scripture clearly said, Moses7:35 ran, he left. And why did he go to Midian? Because he was afraid of Pharaoh. So if the scripture says in Exodus three that he was afraid of the king, yet7:47 in Hebrews eleven, it says, he was not afraid of the king, which is it? Well, the explanation is not very hard to see. Brothers, sisters, you have to understand7:59 what Hebrews eleven is covering is not one scene of Moses's life. It's not it's not examining only one chapter of the life of8:11 Moses. This is telling the whole narrative, the whole story. So what happened at the age of forty? Moses refused to be called Pharaoh's8:23 daughter, and then he murders the Egyptian task master. He flees to the desert of Midian, and for the next forty years, he lives as a8:34 shepherd on the backside of a desert. And do you know when everything changes? It changed for Moses like it changed for so many of us.8:47 When you encounter the living God, everything changes. Amen. Moses had a burning bush experience.8:59 He encountered Yahweh. He encountered the everlasting. He encountered the I am who I am, and it changed everything forForsaking Egypt by Faith 9:10 Moses. And now Moses is gonna go back to Pharaoh, he's going to go back to Egypt, and is he afraid of Pharaoh? No.9:23 Nine times, Moses is going to declare a plague upon the land of Egypt. All nine9:35 times, God hardens the heart of pharaoh. Nine times, the people of God are disappointed9:48 because what is the command? What is the word of the Lord? Let my people go, and pharaoh will not relent.10:03 You can read the narrative beginning in Exodus chapter five when Moses tells Pharaoh, God says, let my people go. And that prideful10:15 and that arrogant and that idolatrous King says, who is the Lord God? I don't even know Him. Why10:27 should I obey Him? What arrogance.10:39 And now Moses is going to tell Pharaoh, this is the word of the Lord. Now remember church, remember Israel knew nothing of God. The only thing Israel10:51 knew at this point was slavery, oppression, and bondage. They had no Bible. They had no law. They had11:03 no... Really really they had no religion. They had no rituals. They had no ceremonies. They had no sacrifices. They had no priest. They didn't11:15 have any light of God. All they knew is that they were Hebrews from the land of Canaan. But for the last four hundred years, all they11:26 had was a slave mentality, oppressed under the Egyptians. And now Moses burst on the scene after having an encounter with11:38 God, and he tells Pharaoh and he tells the Israelites, God says we are to go back to Canaan and serve him. Pharaoh will11:50 not listen. So here Moses is not afraid of the king, begins to pronounce plagues upon the land of Egypt, and it is stunning what happens.12:02 But each time, pharaoh will not relent. Finally, it comes time for the tenth plague,12:15 the finality of the plagues, the most severe of them all. And God tells Moses, the death angel is going to pass through the land of12:27 Egypt and the firstborn of every family of every human and animal, the firstborn that does not have the blood applied to12:38 its doorpost will die. Why do you suppose the tenth and the most severe plague was the death of the firstborn?12:50 Why do you suppose because eighty years prior, what did Pharaoh do to the people of God? He murdered13:02 their firstborn sons. Be not deceived. God is not mocked.13:15 And here this idolatrous, worldly, carnal, sinful, arrogant, boastful, and proud king, the pharaoh.13:28 He tells Moses up to this point. He says, if I ever see your face again, you will be a dead13:39 man. Yet was Moses afraid of the anger of the king? No. At any point, Pharaoh could have had him arrested, could have had him tortured, could13:51 have had him murdered, but was Moses afraid? Absolutely not. What a courageous man of God. And, you know, that's the thing. God will give courage from heaven14:03 that's not man produced. God will give faith from heaven that is not man produced. Can we say amen today? What gave Moses such14:15 courage? What gave him such faith? You know what God told him at the burning bush? He said, this is a token unto you. This is a sign unto you. I will be14:27 with you. Amen? Do you realize we have the same promise that Moses had? For what does the Bible say in Hebrews thirteen verse five? Don't14:39 worry, we'll be there in many months. What does he say in Hebrews thirteen five? God says, I will never leave you nor14:51 forsake you. So I will boldly say, the lord is my helper. What will I fear what man can do15:03 unto me? Praise god. Amen? We have the same token, the same promise, the same God. So Moses goes before Pharaoh.15:16 And not only does he go before Pharaoh, he goes before the people of Israel. Now remember, the Israelites are angry at Moses. The more that God plagues Egypt15:28 the harder Egypt oppresses the Israelites. And nine times it appears the promise of God has failed. Nine times15:40 it appears that God has let them down. Nine times Pharaoh's heart has hardened and he has said no and made life worse. So15:52 look at the next phrase. He forsook Egypt. He was not afraid of the anger of the king. And look what it says next. He endured16:05 as seeing him who is invisible. The word endured here is very special. Now our English word endured is throughout the entire New Testament, but in the16:17 New Testament in the original language, this word endured is unique. It's only in this verse. It means to be fortified. ItCourage from Encountering God 16:29 means to be strengthened. Because why? Look at the pressure that Moses had. Not only did he have the pressure of pharaoh who told him, I see your face again,16:42 and I'll kill you. He's got the pressure of the Israelites who are saying, Moses, you're making things worse. But no, he found a strength.16:55 He found a promise. He was fortified. Why? Because he continuously looked to the lord. Notice the way the holy spirit writes this. It does17:07 not say he endured because he had seen the Lord. No, what's it say? Seeing the invisible. What does that17:19 mean? That means brothers, sisters, you must continuously keep your eyes upon the Lord. Amen. You have to continuously look at God. You can't look at other people.17:31 You can't look at the circumstances of what's happening. You can't look at yourself. You can't look at the church or other believers. You have to look directly to the Lord.17:43 Amen. Not unto others. See, you and I, when we read Exodus five through twelve, see we have an advantage. We have a thirty17:54 thousand foot advantage that we know the whole story. We know how things turned out. When we see disappointment after disappointment, plague after plague,18:07 We know the end of the story. That's why a lot of times we don't feel the emotion of what's happening in the moment, in the text, in the narrative, because we18:19 know the end. Brothers, sisters, it's the same in our lives. You know, I think if we could all take that heavenly view of our life, we wouldn't18:31 get swept up in the emotion of the moment. We wouldn't get swept up in the problems of the day. We wouldn't get swept up in the trouble or the things that we are unable18:43 to control right now. No. You know what we would do? Rather than getting all disturbed and all upset over the various chapters of our life, we would say, no, we trust a18:55 sovereign God who declares the end from the beginning. God is able to work all things together for my good, and I know how the story is19:07 gonna end. The story is gonna end with God's promises being fulfilled, amen? So don't let your peace beEnduring by Seeing the Invisible 19:19 stolen by the enemy. How did Moses endure? He continuously kept his eyes on the invisible one. How will19:30 you make it? You continuously look to the Lord Jesus and to no other. Now look what it says in verse twenty eight. Isn't twenty seven just19:42 so rich? That's why we just can't preach Hebrews eleven and three Sundays. You just...19:57 Thank you. Amen. I'll take it brother. And if not, I'll encourage myself. Amen, Chad. Yeah. Preach on.20:15 Look at verse twenty eight with me. Now this is so important. This is everything. This is everything. This is everything.20:28 By faith, he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood. Now, let's understand what's happening.20:40 Moses goes to Pharaoh, and he's not afraid of the king. And Moses says, we, the Hebrews, we, the people of God, we, the Israelites,20:52 to go into the wilderness and we're going to worship God. And you know what Pharaoh says? Chapters five to eight,21:04 Pharaoh says, I'll let you go, but you're not gonna go far. You know what the Holy Spirit is revealing in these texts? He's revealing21:16 the playbook of the enemy for our lives. And in essence, do you know what Pharaoh is saying? Pharaoh is saying, you can play your religion.21:30 You can mess around with this God that you call the true God, but don't take it too far. Do you know what Satan would say to you today?21:42 Satan would say, go to church all you want, but don't take it serious. Satan would say, Yeah, do a morning devotion, but21:54 don't apply the Bible to your life. Oh yeah, enjoy the worship songs, but don't walk away from your sin. Satan will try to contain22:06 us, he'll try to box us in, and essentially, what he'll say is, have your religion, have your church, feel good about you andKeeping the Passover by Faith 22:17 God, but don't take your next steps in spiritual growth. There's some of you right now that he's saying go to church every week, but don't follow the Lord in believer's baptism.22:30 You know what he's saying? He's saying go a little ways, but don't go that far. Amen? Come on now. Come on.22:42 Oh, I feel the Holy Spirit directing right now. There's some... Listen, you can pray all day long, but you've not forgiven that person yet. And you know what God is saying?22:54 God's saying your next step is forgiveness. Your next step is to let it go in Jesus' name. And you know what Satan would say? Don't take it that far. Don't take it that23:05 far. Don't take it that far. He'll box you in. He'll contain you. He doesn't care if you wanna do a little bit of religion,23:17 but don't get serious about Jesus. That's what it's saying. Moses and all of his godly courage and all of his godly boldness, he says, no.23:30 We're gonna go a three days journey into the desert. Second time he goes to Pharaoh and says, let my people go. Pharaoh says, I'll let you go, but23:42 you're men only. According to Exodus, at this time in Israel's history, there are approximately six hundred thousand men, not including their wives23:54 and their little ones. And Pharaoh says, you can go, but you will not go with your family, only the men.24:07 You know what he's saying? He's saying, don't lead your family spiritually. You know what Satan would say to us24:18 today? Satan would say, oh, you can have your church, but God's not gonna have your family. No, sir. No, ma'am. Those24:30 of you that you have adult children and those adult children are prodigals, I am telling you on the authority of the word of God, never ever24:42 let them go in Jesus' name. Did you know that I'm a pastor, husband, and father of four who suddenly went blind in twenty24:54 eighteen? Today, I teach people how life is not random, but it is actually orchestrated by God for a great purpose.
