Introduction to Real Faith and the Reality of Sin 0:00 Love to hear you worship and celebrate God's goodness and God's grace. If you're new here today or new online, we started a brand new series, last week entitled Real Faith is a Faith that Shows Up Everyday.0:12 And it's from the book of first John. We're just gonna walk verse by verse, chapter by chapter, through 1 John, and look at what John says about what it truly means to have a genuine faith or a real0:24 faith. If you missed last week, I told you a little bit about John. What John writes to us over the next couple of weeks, challenging us to learn to walk like Jesus, and love like Jesus, and live like0:35 Jesus, is out of his experience. Because remember we talked about this last week, when John was called, James and John were brothers, James and John the son of Zebedee, Jesus originally called0:47 them the sons of thunder. Because they were hot headed commercial fishermen. They were these guys that always just wanted to burn something down. There was a time I shared with you last week, they0:59 went to a Samaritan village and they thought that the people in the Samaritan village weren't nice enough to Jesus, so what about out of town they get hacked off? And they said, Jesus,1:11 why don't we just go back there and call fire down from heaven and destroy them all? Jesus is like, easy boys. And so he goes from being that kind of guy, that son of a thunder, to in part of1:23 Jesus' inner circle, to be the 1 and the disciple that Jesus loved, to be the 1 there at the crucifixion where Jesus turns the care and1:34 provision for his mom over to this disciple John. Let me tell you what that means. That means there is hope for all of us. Turn to the person next to you and say there's hope, still hope.1:50 So last week we finished with this, and and I want to start it. Y'all had so much fun doing this last week. I thought I'd start with this and here it is. Alright, so this is your honesty check. You ready? Honesty check.2:01 Turn to the person next to you and say you are a sinner. Just feels good, doesn't it? It just feels good to2:13 remind somebody of something they already know. Alright, now here's the harder honesty part, Turn back at them and now say, hey, but I'm a bigger 1. Alright.2:25 See, here's the deal. We're gonna talk about John. He says, listen, none of us are perfect, but hopefully we're getting better. I will also tell you, we're gonna talk about sin today. Everybody say sin. Sin. A lot of2:36 people are afraid to talk about sin because they're afraid. Well people will feel bad. They'll run away. They won't come to church. Let me tell you why I talk about sin. Because when I get to talk about our sin, my sin,2:46 then I get to juxtapose it against God's amazing grace, forgiveness, and love. Give God a hand for that, right? So when we talk about sin, every service is always in2:57 relationship to the holiness and righteousness and love of an amazing God. So let's go back to the verse we finished on last week and let's see what it says. He says, if we claim,3:09 that's just a claim, to be without sin, let me just tell you right now, if you claim to be without sin, the most dangerous lie you can ever believe is a lie you tell yourself. How many of you know that? If you claim3:21 to be without sin, we do what? We deceive ourselves. John is saying you become your own con artist. You're playing tricks on yourself, you're believing your own lies. And he says, and the truth is not3:33 in us. So see, he says what? He says, if you claim to be without sin, you deceive yourself and the truth is not even in you. Man, you're like a Pharisee pretending to be better than3:45 you are. And here's the reality, when it comes to our sin, you know, we can fool our friends. We can fool the pastor. You can sometimes even fool your3:57 spouse, man, but you can never fool God. The truth is some people don't have a sin problem, they have a memory problem. They can remember4:09 everybody else's shortcomings except for their own. You know, when it comes to society today, a lot of people don't use the word sin because we developed a bunch of synonyms for it,4:21 right? It's not a sin, it's a mistake. Anybody ever made a mistake? That's a synonym, for sin. Maybe other people say well, it's it's it's this addiction that I have. Well it's it's still a4:32 sin and and the beautiful thing, if you have an addiction, I'm gonna show you how to confess it and receive forgiveness for it. Some people say, I have a weakness. Or I struggle in this area. Or I have some sort of4:44 dysfunction. Or yeah, I've just got this baggage. Or I've got this bad habit. Here's the truth, sin simply means missing the mark.4:57 It is an archery term. Anybody been watching much of the Olympics now? My favorite winter sport, I wish I would have grown up doing this, is the 1 where they get to ski, then lay down and shoot things. How many of you5:08 like that? Right? I'm like, that's a great sport right there. That you just get to ski and ski and then all of a sudden you get to lay down and you get to shoot at these targets and you get back up and ski5:20 again. I'm like, why didn't my parents put me in that? Other than I grew up in Houston and it doesn't snow. But we shot a lot of things and we'll tell you that. But even the best of the best, here's what you know.5:31 Because the word sin is the Greek word amartia. It is a marksman term. It is really an archer term, but there is a target. And an archer in that day, the Greek archers, or5:43 they throw a spear at a target. Well what's the target? Jesus said, be ye therefore perfect for your father in heaven is perfect. There's your target. That you want to be perfect in everything you say,5:55 in everything that you do, every attitude that you have, every thought that you have, every everything that you have, right? That's the target. However, we all miss the target. Everybody say all of us. All of6:07 us. Alright. Even the best of the best. These people got to the Olympics because they are fantastic at skiing and shooting. But if you'll watch it, there's6:19 sometimes that they'll lay down and bing, first 1 they're out. Then the next time they might lay down and bing, bing, bing, bing, finally get it. See, and a lot of times we're that6:31 way. It's an archery term, so listen, it's just when instead of responding this way to your wife, you responded that way. Instead of saying this, you say that. Man, I want you to know don't, don't hide behind it. The6:41 beautiful thing about sin is that Jesus Christ died for it. So, Romans chapter 3 verse 23, let's go read about the universality of sin. When I say turn to the person next to you and say you're a sinner, we all6:52 are. Here's what Paul says, for all, everybody say all of us, no exceptions, universal, have sinned, that is the reality, and fall short,7:04 miss the mark, And what is the mark? The glory of God. I ran across an article from September of last year, from Barna Research Group. You can look it up, September fifth of 20 25.7:17 It was a survey on world views and they brought out some data on sin. Here's what Americans think about sin. 84 percent of Americans acknowledge that sin does exist,7:28 yet many resist the idea that they are personally sinners. I want to live in that world. Where I can just stand up here every Sunday and go, about 847:40 percent of the people out there are sinners, but not me. Here's another, only 52 percent of Americans believe everyone has sinned. Direct contradiction to Romans chapter 37:52 verse 23. Only 52 percent of adults admit they personally sin and are still guilty of sin. And here's kind of something that's interesting about it, they go by ages.8:05 The younger the people are, the less they see sin as being real. The older we get, the more we look around and watch the news and go, Sin's a real thing, right? Alright, here's8:17 another 1. Let's see, only 52 percent of adults admit they are personally guilty of sin. Alright, here's number 4, here it is. 70 percent of Americans believe people are basically good at heart.8:29 That's good. What does the Bible say? The heart is deceitful and wicked. Here's another 1, only 41 percent, this is age, of Gen Z, Gen Z believes everyone8:41 sins. But here's the staggering statistic, and they've coded this, it was a Pew research, Barna mentioned it. They surveyed,8:54 American churches, all denominations, all denominations, only 3 percent of sermons ever even mention9:06 sin. 3 percent. I'm not sure what gospel they're preaching. Let me tell you what, if you never mentioned sin in your service or9:18 in in church, then why did Jesus have to die at all? If sin's not a big thing. That's child abuse. But he died with a9:29 purpose, so I want to congratulate you. You're about to get a whole sermon on sin. And every 1 of you need it, okay? Every 1 ofConfessing Sin: Come Clean and Receive Forgiveness 9:41 you need it. So as we think about sin, let me just walk you through a couple of thoughts. Psalm 32, let me give you a setting. David has already committed adultery with Bathsheba.9:54 Not only has he committed adultery with Bathsheba, they had a child, that child died. Then David also had her husband Uriah killed. Now David after that, since10:06 he's the king, he can he can suppress his sin, but guilt starts growing. Nathan the prophet eventually comes and challenges David, but in Psalm 32, David is10:18 talking about, the psalm is saying, he's talking about that time between the adultery and the murder and confession to the prophet. And notice how he says it was. Talking about that guilt, that hidden10:30 sin. He says, when I kept silent about what? My sin. My bones wasted away. Boy, physically, emotionally, and relationally, spiritual toil. Away through my groaning all10:42 day long. He says, Man, I hid my sin, but my soul was screaming. He says, For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My strength was sapped as in the heat of the summer.10:54 Boy, and notice what it says. It says then I acknowledged my sin, I finally owned it to you and did not cover it up my iniquity anymore. No more excuses. And I said I will confess11:06 my sins and transgressions to God or the Lord. And what happened? You forgave the guilt of my sin. Here's what David found out. If you11:18 suppress your sin or hide your sin, you don't receive forgiveness. See, silence about sin doesn't remove the guilt. Sometimes it multiplies the11:30 shame. Sometimes it just multiplies the shame. And so when we talk about dealing honestly with sin, there are 4 things that happen when you and11:41 I with real faith address sin in a real way. Number 1, just write this down, pull your app open, real faith is honest about sin. Real faith11:53 is honest about sin. Where do you see that? Alright, here it is. Go back to where we were last week. Stop pretending we don't sin. Here it is, first John chapter 1 verse 8. If we claim, this is taught verse reality, to12:05 be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, here's the beauty of it. It. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just. This is about God's character,12:17 not mine. And will forgive us all of our sins, plural. Not a sin, not a limited number of sins. Everyone we confess. And purify us, that means pardon or cleanse us,12:28 from all unrighteousness. So here's the deal, the reason why we want to talk about sin is that when I say something or do something or have a bad thought, I can confess that and God forgives me12:40 of that. That's the beauty of God's love and God's grace. We want to be honest about sin. David said, well if I pretend it didn't happen, it'll get better. What did David say? No, it got worse. He says because when you12:51 hide sin, your soul starts screaming and eventually it's gonna start leaking into your relationships, your attitude, the way you think, because you're carrying around this guilt that God never wanted you to walk around13:03 with. See, God sent his son to die on a cross for your sins and my sins. Yes, the ones I've already committed, but the ones that I'm still yet to commit. Now13:15 what John's gonna say is I want to live in such a way that I get better every day as I walk in the lord. But we never get to perfect. We're gonna see that, that's the last point today.13:26 So here it is, verse 10. However, if we claim that we have not sinned, that's denial, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.13:39 So when we talk about sin, the best thing we can do for sin is to confess. And so this week I spent a little time coming up with an an acrostic. We're gonna put it up on the screen for you. You might want to take a13:48 picture of it. And an acrostic for the word confess. So you're not afraid of the word confess, I just want to take this and make an acrostic for you, so buy your bible or buy your computer,14:00 just put this down and say alright I'm gonna confess today. And you go hey, I don't know what that means, let me just tell you what it means. Here it is, first C, just come clean with God. Just be honest14:12 about your sin, and say God, I just need to come clean, I need your forgiveness. The o is own it personally. Own your sin.14:24 What did it say David did? David acknowledged his sin. That word acknowledge means to own your sin. N, name the sin specifically. Don't just kind of say14:36 God forgive me for some of the things I might not have done so well. You say, well I really don't know what to list. Go ask your wife, She's got a list. Promise you. She's gonna lay it all14:48 out there for you guys and she can fix this up, alright? You will not lack things that you need to confess if you just asked your wife to give you a list. She'll start 1 of those, Gina15:00 start and I start a shared note. I used to used to have this note, things to do. How many of you do that in your, I do, in my note. And then Gina always thought it was genius because that helps me get things to do, so I15:11 don't forget things to do. And Gina 1 time says, hey, why don't why don't we share this things to do list? And guess whose things to do list it is now? It is her15:23 telling me what to do. Alright? And I'm like, I didn't put that on the list. She goes, I'll put that on the list. Right? So, if you need some of us to name the sin specifically. Now here's the F. Listen, fall on God's15:35 mercy. God wants to forgive you. God loves you. He wants to care for you. He wants you to get better. E, embrace Christ as your advocate. This is my favorite point. I'm gonna show you this here15:47 in a second. We're gonna dig into that. S, seek God's seek forgiveness for others. You say, alright, how open and public should I be about my sin? Well it depends on how open and public it was when you15:59 hurt someone else. If it was a private sin, private confess it privately. If I sinned and in my sinning I hurt someone, when I confess it, I need to go back and say, hey I want to apologize to you.16:11 I shouldn't have said this, I was angry, I was this, I was that. Now, if it's a public sin, like you hurt the whole organization or you hurt somebody else, then you need to share it with the group that you hurt. So, you16:23 don't have to confess every sin publicly, but you want to make things right. Alright? So that's first S. And then the next S is start walking in obedience. Say, alright I'm confessing this, I don't want to keep16:35 repeating this. So first thought is this, I want to deal honestly with my sin. I love what Isaiah chapter 1 verse 8 says. This is God speaking to Isaiah and God says, come16:47 now, let us settle the matter. I I love this, this is God inviting Isaiah who is a sinful man. God just simply says, come on.16:59 Hey, let's settle this. How many of you would like God to settle your sin? Yeah, he invites you to come and confess. He doesn't sit there and go, really? Really John Mark, you did that again?17:11 No, he says, come on. Let us settle the matter, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be made white as snow. Though they are red as crimson, they shall17:23 be like wool. I love this, did you get that? God says, listen, if you're a sinner, come on. Come on. And then God says, I want to forgive you. I want you to confess. I want you to own up. Acknowledge it. Why?17:34 Because then I can take your sins that were like scarlet and that were red and I can make them white as snow, and then you can begin to serve me and honor me in a real way and get better. So child of God don't be17:46 afraid, but you also don't pretend you're everything in a bag everything in a bag of chips. Luke 18, you can pull it up on your app, I won't read it to you.17:58 Jesus says, he's talking to some people that really thought well of themselves, Pharisees. And Jesus said, let me tell you a story. Luke chapter 18, you can go read it, it's also18:10 in the notes. Jesus said, you know, 2 guys went into worship, went into the temple. The Pharisee, who thought so good of himself,18:22 walked right down to the front, raised his hands, looked up into heaven and said, God, I thank you that I am not like other people. I'm not an evil doer,18:33 I'm not a robber, I'm not an adulterer. And the second guy is back at the back with his head bowed. And all At some point, the Pharisee looks around and sees him. He's a tax collector. And he goes, and18:45 I really thank you that I am not like that tax collector back there. You know what? This Pharisee didn't want mercy, he wanted a trophy. Right? Where God would say, well good for18:59 you. But then Jesus says, and the tax collector at the back wouldn't even approach the altar, wouldn't even look up into heaven, just bowed his heads and said, God forgive them. Forgive me. Forgive me. I've done this and19:10 I've done that and I've done this and I've done that, and I love what it says. Jesus then looks back at the Pharisees, say the 1 that stood at the back just humbly confessed,19:23 he went away justified and forgiven. The 1 at the front, he just left with a trophy and a pat on the back, but not forgiveness. God says come19:35 on. Thought number 1, real faith deals honestly with sin. Here's number 2, real faith makes changes in their lives, not excuses. Let me show you 1 of my favorite19:47 paths. You asked me what's my favorite chapter in the whole Bible, Romans 8. Couple of my favorite verses, right here. You're about to see them. Real faith makes changes not excuses. Here it is. Let's start reading.Jesus as Advocate: Making Changes, Not Excuses 19:57 First John chapter 2 verse 1. Remember this hot headed guy has now changed and he's talking to us. He says, hey my dear little children, write it out all up. He says, I write this to you so that you20:09 will not sin. What's the goal? Not to sin. Don't go out of here saying, well if this whole confession and forgiveness thing is so cool, I'm going to sin a lot. Matter of fact,20:21 you go read that over Romans chapter 6, Paul is talking about the grace of God, and he says, some of you are asking, shall we go on sinning so that grace may abound? In other words, if grace is such a good thing, let's20:32 sin so I get more grace. And Paul says, may it never be. Alright, so the goal is that we would not sin. That's the goal. My dear little children, I write this to you so that you will not sin, but20:44 notice, but if anybody does sin, that's the reality. The goal is not to sin. The reality is we do sin. What do we do? We have an advocate, words20:56 used twice in the new testament. Once over in John, where Jesus is saying I'm gonna send another helper to you, an advocate with you, talking about the Holy Spirit. But that same word is also21:08 used in the courtroom setting. He says we have an advocate with the father, what? Jesus Christ the righteous, the best attorney you can possibly have. And so here's what it is, notice this is21:20 the courtroom, this is what we're thinking about. God is the judge, Satan is the prosecutor, I'm the defendant, Jesus is my lawyer.21:32 Now listen, if you haven't trusted Jesus, you go in there and try to defend yourself in the court of heaven by yourself. What is the old saying? A person who represents himself in court has a fool for a21:44 client. Man, you want Jesus as your advocate. You want Jesus as your attorney. Here's what you want to understand. Jesus, in the love of John, said he is perfect and righteous, holy.21:56 That's who my attorney is. Who am I? I'm just I'm just a dumb client that keeps doing dumb stuff, right? That he has to step up and say, yeah he did it. Alright, so let's read on. Notice this, I love22:08 it. He says, my goal is that you would not sin, but if anybody does sin we have an attorney, Jesus Christ, with the father, the righteous 1. Look at verse 2, and Jesus, this attorney of ours is the22:20 atoning sacrifice for our sins, that means our sins are paid for, and not only for ours, but also for the sins of the entire world. So he's painting the courtroom22:32 picture scene. God is the judge. Satan is the prosecutor. Jesus is my attorney. I'm the client. Prosecutor stands up and says John Mark is guilty of this this this22:44 this this. And my natural desire is to say, and the judge says, how do you plead? I say, not guilty. And Jesus says, hey, I got this. Jesus22:56 says, he's guilty. And I look at him a little bit and he goes, no, dude. You're worse. More than he called out. So Jesus says, you you just keep your mouth closed. I got23:08 this. And Jesus says, everything Satan accuses him of is absolutely true, but remember, dad, we took care of this on a cross.23:19 Remember when I hung on the cross, I said, father, forgive them for they know not what they do? Remember just before I returned to heaven, I said a word, tay telestai.23:31 That means it is finished, paid in full. And God as the judge says, I do. And he slams the gavel down, said forgiveness for all. I love23:43 that. That's a beauty. Now let's continue to read on. Notice what he says. Pick it up in verse 3. Then he says, and we know that we have come to know him if we keep his23:55 commandments. Alright. So now I've gotten forgiveness, I've been honest about my sin, I claim that I am a Christian, and so now John says, how do you know if you're truly a Christian? He says, we know that we have come24:06 to know him if we do what? If we keep his commandments. Whoever says I know him, but does not keep his commandments is a liar and the truth is not in that person. So, here's what he's saying. A24:17 claim without change is a contradiction. Do you get it? If I claim to be a Christian, but there's24:29 no change in the way I talk and walk, My claim is contradiction between how I walk and how I talk. Does that make sense? Let me put it to you this way. Let's say that I stood up today. I'm not saying24:41 this, but let's say I did. Let's say this is starting now, I'm going on a diet. I've gotta just get rid of all the junk food. That's the claim. So then, tonight, you happen to run into24:53 me and Kroger. And you have to look in my basket and I've got about 8 bags of Oreos and I've got a bunch of Blue Bell ice cream and I've got glazed donuts for in the morning. I got Swiss cake rolls. You're gonna look25:04 down and say, didn't you just say this morning that you were going on a diet? The claim has to create change. If I claim today that I'm going on a diet, you see me in25:16 Kroger tonight, you ought to see me with chicken breast and turkey and right everything whole. See, a claim without change is a contradiction. So, John is simply saying, he's not saying it's not my job to25:28 walk around and judge your Christianity. But, the way you can really know if you know, is when you trust Jesus Christ you don't get perfect, but you are going to want to change. Does that make sense? And, so we want to25:39 learn to follow him. You can say, I know him, but sometimes if your actions say you never met him, maybe I need to reevaluate, right? So there it is. Alright,25:51 here's here's number 3. Ready? Number 3, real faith always loves like Jesus. Real faith loves like Jesus. And I love this, now remember John is coming from being a hot headedLoving Like Jesus: Direction Over Perfection 26:03 blue collar commercial fisherman that wanted to burn everybody up, to now he's saying, man, I have learned to love like Jesus. Here it is, first John chapter 2 verse 7. He says, dear friends, I am writing to26:14 you a new command. Not a not a new camp command, but an old 1. Which you have had since the beginning. Look, this old command is the message you've heard. Yet I am writing to you a new command,26:26 its truth is seen. Now notice this, in him and in you. See, the old command was a content. Love 1 another. The new command is now that we have the spirit of Christ in us, we want26:38 to live like Christ. And so that's the new command, that you and I, once we have accepted Christ as savior and the world, there ought to be a change in our lives. Continue going. Because the darkness is passing away and26:50 the true light is already shining. Look at this verse 9. Anyone who claims to be in the light, but hates his brother or sister still walks in darkness. Folks, if you27:02 hate people, especially brothers and sisters in Christ, it blinds you, it darkens you, it dulls your spiritual energy. Man, you need to learn to just let it go. It's not good for you.27:14 Then notice verse 11, but anyone who hates a brother or sister and walks around in darkness, stop being petty. Says they do not know where they're going. Why? Because the darkness has blinded them. So27:26 here's what John says, and we'll see the fourth point. Everybody sins, deal honestly with it by confessing. Number27:38 2, don't make excuses, make changes. Jesus is your advocate. When you stand before God as the judge, the father, and Satan starts prosecuting27:50 you maybe at night in your own mind, your own heart, look at Jesus. Jesus paid for it. He says, now after you're a Christian you've been forgiven for your sins, there28:02 ought to be something that changes in your life. If I claim to be a Christian, there ought to be changes in my life where others see that my claim is not a contradiction, it's a confirmation.28:15 See, because if I claim to be a Christian and all of a sudden people start seeing these changes in the way I talk and how I live and how I walk, those changes are confirmation of what I say.28:28 Here's number 4. You ready? Real faith, it's about direction not perfection. You can go to church as much as you want, you can read your Bible as much as you28:39 want, not 1 of you including me will be perfect the rest of our life. There will always be that thought or that word or that attitude that showed up that I need to28:51 confess. Can I tell you, God doesn't walk around taking screenshots of your life at his worst moment? You wanna know what God's looking at?29:03 He wants to look at the compass of your life. What direction are you heading? In the midst of heading in the direction you're gonna stumble, you're gonna fall, you're gonna mess up,29:15 we're gonna make mistakes, whatever you want to call it. And Jesus just says, confess it because I paid for it. Let me show you that, the idea of29:27 direction. Here it is. We'll just last couple of verses. We'll now jump back to first John chapter 1 verse 7. He says, but if we walk in the light, that's direction, that's progress, step by step, day by day. As he is in29:38 the light, we have fellowship with 1 another in the blood of Jesus Christ. His son purifies us from all sin. Last verse. First John chapter 2 verse 6. Whoever claims remember, a29:50 claim without change is a contradiction. Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. How many of you remember the WWJD?30:02 The bracelets, the shirts, the what would Jesus do? If you want to know the verse that came from, it's right there. The inspiration for WWJD was first John chapter30:14 2 verse 6. What would Jesus do? That's a good question to ask. As you think about how am I30:26 gonna respond, what am I gonna do, what am I gonna say, it's a good question to ask. In this situation, what would Jesus do? And then acknowledge the reality30:39 you're not Jesus. So you are gonna drop the ball sometime and you say well how do I know what to confess? When you do something you're30:50 100 percent sure that Jesus would not have done. It's just that simple. Jesus wouldn't have responded to my wife that way or my kids this way or talk to a subordinate that way. What would Jesus31:02 do? Real faith is honest about sin. When we're honest about sin we receive forgiveness. Real31:14 faith makes changes, not excuses. Real faith learns more and more to walk in love. Real faith31:27 cares more about direction than perfection. There'll come a day when you take your last breath on earth and you get your heavenly body that you'll be perfect.31:40 But until then, my claim of growing in my faith ought to be seen by the changes in my life, so it becomes confirmation31:52 that I truly am who I say I am. Let's pray. God, thank you so much for the opportunity to talk about sin all sermon. Because32:04 when I look at the darkness and the cloud of my sin, I get to see through it to your amazing grace and love. God, I pray that we be the kind of people that32:16 make changes, that confirm our claims and not contradict them. God, let us be a people that freely confess when we fall32:27 short and accept your grace. In Jesus name we pray, amen and amen.In this video 0:00 Introduction to Real Faith and the Reality of Sin9:41 Confessing Sin: Come Clean and Receive Forgiveness19:50 Jesus as Advocate: Making Changes, Not Excuses25:57 Loving Like Jesus: Direction Over Perfection
