God's Purpose in Our Pain 0:00 Morning, Cottonwood Creek. You glad you're in God's house today? Yeah. Man, it sure sounded like it. If you're new with us, either in person or online, a couple of weeks ago, we started a brand new series entitled More0:12 Than Conquerors, where we're looking for 4 weeks, into this amazing chapter, Romans chapter 8. You know, if you think about God's word, we said this, it's kind of landscape. You'll have some mountains, you'll have some0:23 valleys, you'll have some, beautiful pastures, but there is 1 chapter, really, Romans chapter 8 that kind of seems to stand out and stand up, kinda like Mount Everest, higher than all the others, because of0:35 its theological content and also its spiritual encouragement. And they're all found right there in this Romans chapter 8. We looked week 1, if you missed those, I wanna encourage you to go online. We looked0:47 at Romans chapter 8 verse 1, which says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. And we talked that week about how do we as God's children live free in a guilty world. And so if you missed that, I wanna0:57 encourage you to go back and get it. Then last week we talked about what is the mindset of a conqueror. That we can either be driven by our flesh or we can listen to the spirit and those are 2 different things. And so1:09 we talked about that mindset that literally Paul says what I'm thinking about will affect how I feel. How I feel will typically determine how I act. And he says man, if we want to be tapped1:21 in to how God wants us to act, we need to set our minds on the things of the spirit. Now today, I want to talk to you about Romans chapter 8, a reality. How many of you know we live in a hard world?1:33 How many of you have at least 1 problem right now? Romans chapter 8, Paul says basically, it's amazing verse, Romans 8 28. He says listen, we all have hurts.1:45 But he also says God has a purpose in your pain. And then he reminds us that as a child of God, that our hope always outlasts our hurt. The hope that1:57 we have in God, the love that we have in God always outlasts our hurt. I was just looking this week as I was preparing, I just did a little Google search and said what are the top 50 or 10 or2:09 25 most searched bible verses in the last 12 months. Alright, let me give them to you. John chapter 3 verse 16, number 1. How many of you kinda like that? Pretty good? Number 22:21 was Jeremiah 29 11. For God has a plan for your life, a hope and a future. How many of you like that 1? Number 3, in the last 12 months, Romans chapter 8 verse 28.2:33 Because I think people are saying man, what does God and sometimes it's a reflection, sometimes it's because you encounter someone that's you're going through something and you're like, what was that verse which says God2:44 makes everything good? Well that's not exactly what it says, but you go look it up and you say, hey, here's text them a Bible verse, Romans chapter 8. That means people are going through stuff. Everybody say stuff. So2:55 that led me to just kinda Google what are the top 10 things that people have gone online to search for, in the last 12 months to deal with the hurt that they're having.3:07 And so let me just give you the top 10 things, we'll put them up on the screen for you, I won't go over all of them. So what I just did is I just sat down this week and took those 10 things, if we think about Romans3:17 chapter 8 verse 28. God causes everything to work for the good of those who are called according to His purpose. Doesn't say they're all good. But I said well that must3:28 mean that when I go through pain, something good's going to come out of it. Does that make sense? That's the only way that makes sense is if when I go through pain, something good go comes3:40 out of it. So I just begin to step back and think about biblical characters, bible verses and I'll say okay, what pain does this problem cause and what good can come out of it? So let me just give you a couple, here's3:51 what I came up with. You can have different ones. I've encountered a number of people, both in our church and at Lifetime or wherever I'm meeting people that have lost their jobs. Companies downsize, just all of a sudden4:03 they show up 1 day, hey go to HR, you no longer have a job. So if you're in that, here's the pain. You lose your job, financial pressure, loss of security, shaken4:15 confidence. Here's the good that can come out of this. The good, opens doors for a new opportunity you wouldn't pursued otherwise. Does that make sense? Not only that,4:27 teaches dependence on God, not your work, can lead to work that's more in line with your ultimate calling. Do you get that? The pain of losing a job can cause something good to4:38 happen. Now we don't necessarily wanna go through that pain. Here's another 1. Maybe you're going through some health problems. We've got a number of ministries here at the church that minister to those who are going4:48 through health problems. 1 of them, 1 of our biggest is cancer care ministry. My guess is there's some people in this room or online that that you have had that diagnosis. Here here here's the pain health5:00 problem. Physical suffering, limitations of physical ability of what you used to be able to do, uncertainty about the future. How many of you understand that? What is going to happen? Is5:12 remission gonna hold or is the cancer gonna come back? Here's the good, that pain can deepen our compassion for others. That's how cancer care got started at5:23 Cottonwood Creek, is people didn't choose it, but they went through it and they said we now wanna love others as they roll through it. So that's the good. Here's another5:35 good, increases our reliance on God's strength, not our own strength. Here's another good. Gives us a powerful testimony of faith through hardship. Let let me just deal with another 1, how about this?5:47 Financial problems. Man, maybe you've gotten in over your head and interest rates and inflation and all of a sudden you're going through financial problems. I've gotten a number of emails and people talk to me about5:57 that, man. We're just in over our heads right now. Alright, here's the pain. Stress, fear, limited resources, and almost sometimes a hopelessness. Here's the good that6:08 can come out of going through financial pain, teaches us stewardship in the days ahead. Contentment, to only buy what we need to buy, to trust and rely on6:20 God, there's always a pain that leads to a good. Maybe broken relationships, maybe some of you are here and you are single or you're in church alone and it wasn't your choice,6:32 your spouse said I'm done or walks out. Man, you think about that, the pain, loneliness, rejection, grief. Those are all real. What's the good? Might teach us forgiveness,6:45 might help us set healthier boundaries in the days ahead, might draw you closer to God as your ultimate source of love. So child of God, when we look at Romans chapter 8 verse6:56 28 today, it doesn't say all things are good. It says that somehow, someway in your pain, God can do something special to bring something good out of it. Does7:08 that make sense? And so let's let's just look and let me walk you back through where we've been quickly. Romans chapter 8 verse 37 in the chapter, Here's where we drew, ultimately, the sermon title from,7:20 Romans chapter 8 verse 37. Says no, in all, everybody say in. Not from. In all these things, those 10 things I just put on the screen, others that Paul's gonna look at and7:32 we're gonna look at those next week, he says in all these things, not from them, we are more than conquerors through my strength? No, through him who loved us. What makes this chapter7:44 so amazing is is at the beginning of the of the chapter, there is a bookend called No Condemnation. Guilty, yes. Condemned, never. But at the latter part of the7:56 book, there's a bookend of no separation from God's love. So the beginning of the book talks to us about how to live free in a guilty world. The end of the book tells us how to live with certainty8:08 that nothing, either things present nor anything to come, nor any other creative being, will ever separate me from the love of God. And that's what makes this chapter so amazing. So then the week 1, we8:20 looked at Romans chapter 8 verse 1. Let me just read it to you quickly, he says, therefore there is now, everybody say now. Now. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ. In other words, if you are saved,8:31 you are guilty, but condemned never. Then last week, we looked at this idea, the mindset of the conqueror. Notice what Paul says. He says those who live according to the flesh, that's 1 mindset,8:43 have their mind set on what the flesh desires. But those who live according to the spirit, that should be us followers of Christ, with the spirit have their mind set on what the8:55 spirit desires. And that's what we talked about. Paul says, where you set your mind will determine how you feel. How you feel will probably determine how you act. It's9:07 not the reverse of that. So So we always want to be thinking as God's children, God let me have your mind. Let me set my mind on the things of the spirit so I can think and then feel and act in accordance with how God9:19 would want me to act. So you say, how in the world can we do this? Well, Paul tells us right here. Romans chapter 8, pick it up in verse 15. He says, the spirit you received9:31 does not, when you become a Christian, you receive the holy spirit. And that spirit that you receive does not make you slaves so that you would live in fear again of what, God, of condemnation, of9:43 of the world? He goes, rather the holy spirit or the spirit you received brought you into or brought about your adoption as sons. In other words, we become children of9:55 God. Once I'm saved, I'm immediately adopted into God's family. Do you realize that? As a child of God, you are adopted into God's family. You know there are a lot of pretty10:07 powerful adoptions that have taken place that you may or may not know about. How many of you remember Steve Jobs, Apple co founder? He was adopted as a child. How many of you liked to listen to Faith Hill? Faith Hill,10:19 she was she was adopted as a child. How many of you ever even met Wendy's? Dave Thomas? Man, he was adopted as a kid. Simone Biles, anybody ever watch and love her? Man, somebody brought her10:30 in and said listen, you are now part of our household, we're gonna provide for you the opportunity. God did it, but he did it way better. So he says listen, once we are saved, we are adopted into10:42 God's house and by him, the spirit, we cry Abba Father. That really means we say Abba. Abba is a term of endearment, a compassion love that we have for God. We don't have to fear him. Look at verse10:54 17. And so now, if we are children of God, then we are heirs. And notice this, of God and co heirs with Christ. You know what he's11:06 saying? He's saying our inheritance is so awesome it'll make Bill Gates look broke. Right? That you and I, as we journey forward as children11:18 adopted, If you want to just write something down or take some notes in your phone, when you think adoption, think of belonging. When you are an orphan, you don't belong. When you're11:30 adopted, you belong. And so when we get saved, we are immediately by the Holy Spirit of God adopted into God's family, but it doesn't stop there. That our father then becomes11:42 Abba. That is a term, a kind term, a warm term, kind of like daddy. That when you and I come to God, we can cry out sometimes or we can say, daddy,11:55 1 of your child, 1 of your children. Sometimes we go and we say, man life's dealt me a bad hand. Daddy can you help? Sometimes we go to daddy and say, I12:07 blew this 1. I could sure use my dad's help. And notice what it says, so we become adopted, which means we belong. We get the spirit, which means we've12:19 called the father, the heavenly father, the god who spoke the world into existence. You and I can approach and refer to him as daddy. The holy spirit reminds us over and over again that we12:30 are an heir, listen to this, and the roman society, if you go read about it, Paul talks about it in Romans chapter 1 and number of other places. There was a lot about the roman society that was wrong.12:43 They had a tendency to break all moral norms, they were willing to be incestuous, they were willing to do anything and everything. They did a lot of things wrong, but if you go back and look at Roman adoption, they did12:55 that right. They did that right. And here's what happened in Roman society and this is the backdrop of what Paul is saying and the Romans understood it. He said the moment you were adopted into a new13:07 family, 2 things happen. Number 1, your debt or your family's debt was cleared from your account. Get it?13:18 And immediately, not sometime in the future when you earned it, you became an heir, a joint heir with all the other biological children. So Paul is using that as the13:30 backdrop, he's saying just like in the Roman society when someone is adopted, a lot of times someone was adopted to the Roman society because maybe maybe they were born to to family of slaves or or their mom or dad got13:42 way in over the head and they couldn't cancel the debt and so they offer up a child, can anybody take this child so they can have a better life? So someone adopts this child and says the responsibility of the debt has13:53 been cleared, it's no longer on you. But beyond that, even way better than that, is you get a full inheritance in our family. And so then for us,14:05 listen to this, our inheritance, Paul says, is the glory that is to come. Hey, just do me a favor, right in right in this room, if you're a Christian, say I'm chosen.14:17 That means you you've been adopted. That God is your father. That that I'm his child. I'm his child when I please him.14:30 I'm his child when I don't please him. How many of you have kids? Aren't there sometimes that boy, you're just at the grocery store, you're at church, or you're out, and your kids just make you so14:42 proud. They're just so sweet. How you doing missus so and so? How you doing missus so and so? Then there's that other trip when you say no to the Skittles.14:56 And you're like, I don't know whose kid this is over on aisle 7. His mama needs to come over here. Right? So when we're in both spaces, God loves us and we get to still say I'm his child.15:08 And so here, the spirit gives me assurance of salvation that I will never be separated from the love of God And then I have a full inheritance. Alright, so now let's dive in. When we think about who we are, it15:19 matters that we understand we're adopted into Christ. That's what allows us to go through what we're about to go through. Look at Romans chapter 8 verse 28. So now Paul says, and now we know, since I15:31 am adopted, I've got glory coming, I've got an inheritance, I'm 1 of God's children, I can call him father. He says, and now we know, everybody say we know. We know that15:43 in all things God works for the good of those who love him. So here's what he's saying, he's saying not every ingredient in your life or everything that15:55 happens in your life is gonna be good, But in all things, God can work it together for good. How many of you like to bake in here? How many? Okay, good, good. We're not a big bacon family, we're16:07 more of a smoking family. On the grill, okay? Don't walk out of here and say, I didn't know the pastor was a big smoker. We love to smoke things, ribs, briskets, stuff like16:19 that, grilled chicken, we do love to do all that stuff. But but if you've ever watched someone who's really good at baking, which would not be us. Let me tell you how we bake. We let16:31 the professionals do their job behind the scenes and put it in a box for us. How many of you know what I'm talking about? About? Then we dump it out and all we have to do is add an egg and a little oil. And16:43 then it comes out awesome, right? But those who are really good at baking, that's not the way you do it. You gather all of what? You gather all the ingredients. Well let's think about the16:54 ingredients, because what Paul says, underline that word works together, those words that's the Greek word synergeo. That there are certain elements in our life, certain different parts and things that17:06 work together into a synergy to connect and become part of God's purpose and will for my life. Just like baking a dish. Alright, where do you start? Probably the number 1 ingredient, I'm I'm assuming this17:18 because I googled it, is flour. How many of you have ever just eaten flour? Not so good. Well then you can get some baking powder or baking17:30 soda, I don't even know what the difference is between them. You ever tasted that stuff? That's awesome, isn't it? Then you put salt, a little salt in there and I don't know what else goes in there, just other17:42 stuff. You might have a little sugar, which is good, or maybe, maybe, different things. And then all of a sudden, what do you do? You crack an egg. You're eating a how many of you eat I know Rocky does it,17:54 but how many of you just like eating raw eggs? They're slimy? They they need oil. And that usually, that oil is best if it's from bacon grease that you just made right before, right? Then18:06 all of a sudden I'm in on the eggs. Right? But all of a sudden what happens? You take all these things, you mix them together, you have a synergy that happens between all these elements, some are good, some are18:17 bad, and then it comes out in this wonderful cake and you're like, that's amazing. Paul is saying, your life's like that. There are certain ingredients in your life18:30 that don't taste good alone. And a lot of times you don't understand how in the world does flour and baking powder and oil and eggs and salt and just go18:42 on down the la vanilla extract, whatever, it is. How do those come out? There's a synergy. And Paul is saying whatever you have in your life, those things that you don't18:53 necessarily like, there is a synergy that happens because of God's grace and because of God's love. So let's continue to read this. He says and we know, verse 28,19:05 that in all things God works, that synergy, those things that don't taste good apart, for the good of those who love him. In other words, if it's in your life, God can weave it into his plan.19:18 That even those things you don't like, that we don't want, if it's in your life God can weave it into his plan. Notice what he says, for those who are called in who love him, who have been called according to his19:30 purpose. What does it mean purpose? We're gonna see it here in a second. It's to conform you to the likeness of Christ.19:42 The goal of this passage that I'm reading is not what most of us think. A lot of times we think the goal of Romans chapter 8 verse 28 to 30 is for me to be happy.19:56 We're gonna read it here in a second. Let me tell you God's number 1 goal for your life is that you would be conformed to the image of Christ. And that means sometimes God's gonna let us go through some20:07 stuff. And you think about in my life and some of the stuff that you've been through in your life and you ever just kind of said, God, why'd you let this happen? Man, I'm a good person, I20:19 love you God, I worship, I go to church. I mean, y'all see me, I'm actually going to church a lot if y'all already know. Father dies, father-in-law dies,20:32 mother-in-law dies of cancer, miscarriage, suicide of my brother. And I sit here and go, I've had enough.20:45 Here's the way I put it, and maybe this will help you in your life. When it comes to Romans 8 28 and following, sometime God sometimes God allows what he hates20:57 to accomplish what he loves. Did you get it? Sometimes God will allow some things to come in your life that are not good. So that21:08 God can accomplish what he loves, which is you and me as his children being more and more conformed to the likeness of Christ. So maybe some of you, if we think about21:20 those 10 problems we have, maybe some of you are going through those. Maybe God is allowing. He doesn't want you to suffer, but sometimes he knows he has has to allow us to go21:32 through some things that he hates to accomplish what he loves. Is you being a child of God that is more and more conformed to Christ. Now let's continue to read on. In accordance to his purpose, look21:44 at verse 29, for those he, and here it is, he foreknew, alright those he that means before to know before, that means before you ever took your21:56 first breath, God knew your last step. That God knew it. God never surprised, oh there's John Mark, I better figure out a plan for him. Says no. He says for those God foreknew, he predestined22:08 to become conformed, underline that. The purpose of this passage is for you and I to become conformed to the image of his son. The goal is not that we would be happy, it's that we would become more and more Christ like22:20 to the image of his son. He says, that he might be the first born among many brothers and sisters. Look at verse 30. And those he predestined, he also called and those22:32 he called, he also justified and those he justified, he also glorified. Many people call this, and not me, I'll just put an image up on the screen. A lot of people refer to this as to the 522:43 links to salvation in God's golden chain. The thought number 1 is this, foreknowledge. That before the God, before God ever created the world, before he ever22:55 created Adam and Eve, you and I, he knew everything about us. He knows your every breath after today, your every step after today, your every action after today. So he foreknew us,23:07 then that next word is predestined. He predestined that just means to develop a predetermined plan on the outcome of something that is gonna happen. Now here's what a lot of people like to do, and I'm not gonna do this23:19 today. A lot of people like to like to take, depending on their theological bent, they like to break this chain apart. And some people say, well foreknowledge is more important. And others say, other people say, well23:29 predestined is another. And other people say, well well calling is more important. Can I tell you that's not the point? It is God's predetermined plan. This all works together. That the foreknowledge of God says he knows23:40 everything beforehand. Predestination says he determined a plan. I see that as the plan of salvation. That God was gonna create a world without robots. That we could choose to accept23:52 him or reject him. That we could choose to sin or not sin. But he also in his foreknowledge knew we were gonna sin, so he had a predetermined plan that he was gonna ultimately send his son Jesus Christ24:04 to die on the cross for your sins and mine, to hang on the cross and say it is finished. In other words, everything has been paid for. All the sins of the world have been paid for. And so that's God's predetermined plan.24:16 Then he calls everyone to salvation. Remember what it says in John chapter 1. Says Jesus came to his own, but his own received him not. But listen to this, but24:28 to as many as received him, accepted him, in other words, Jesus said I'm here for everybody? A lot of people said nope. But then he says, but as many as24:39 received him, to them, everybody say them, those who received, he gave the right to become children of God. So what happens after you say yes24:51 to the call? That's the fourth link in the chain. We are justified. That word simply means just as if I've never sinned. Why? Because of25:03 what Jesus did on the cross, when he says it is finished. He didn't say down payment made. He didn't say first month's payment towards your salvation, good luck.25:15 He says it is finished, in other words that way you and I can be justified just as if we had never sinned, which ultimately leads to our glorification. So as we think about these 5 links, that's where it's25:27 headed. It starts with God's foreknowledge, it ends with God's glorification. If you wanna just say what does verse 28, 29 and 30 mean? God always finishes what he starts.25:39 God always finishes what he starts. And so in your life and in my life, when things go wrong, when things are hard, God always finishes what he starts. Think about the Old Testament. Remember a25:51 guy named Joseph? Joseph had a coat of many colors, remember that and all of a sudden 1 day he he has this dream that all his brothers are gonna bow down and worship to him and and and he26:03 lacked discernment and he kind of told him, today boys, y'all will all worship me. And they said, yeah. Come here we've got a ditch for you. So they take his coat off and26:15 they throw him in a ditch. They cover the coat of many colors, they send it back to the father saying let's pretend he's dead. Let me ask you a question, when Joseph was thrown26:27 in the pit by his brother, do you think Joseph said, just wait until I get to pharaoh's house? No.26:40 He probably thought the exact same thing you and I thought when we get thrown in a pit of job loss or a broken relationship or go through a divorce or get cancer. He thought Lord how can this happen to me? Then he's sold26:52 into slavery. Do you think when he was sold into slavery by his brothers, he was the least happy they didn't kill him, they thought about that at 1 point. Do you think when he was sold into slavery, he says I'm on my way27:01 to the top? No. He's sitting there heading a different direction. The whole time, he's got to be sitting in the cart looking back going, my home is back there, my home is back there, my home is back there,27:13 my family's back there, my friends are back there, everything's back there. You think he was saying I can't wait? No. So child of God, here's here's the encouragement with you. There are sometimes we're in a pit,27:23 sometimes we're sold, sometimes we're heading the wrong way. But I want you to know, God still has a plan. And so then all of a sudden he ends up in Potiphar's house and he says I'm just gonna be diligent, I'm gonna27:34 serve and then Potiphar's wife shows up and she lies about him and he gets thrown in prison. You think he was like, oh yeah, I'm on the way to Pharaoh's house now. Not at all, right?27:46 See, children of God understand the people in God's word had the same emotions, the same experiences that you and I had. There is no point along the27:57 way that I believe Joseph thought you just wait until I'm the second person in all of Egypt and I save many. No, he's going can it get any worse?28:11 And then he's forgotten in prison, then he interprets a dream. Then he ultimately ends up the second person. Remember what he says in Genesis chapter 50 verse 20, his brothers come up to him28:23 and his brothers say, hey listen, we're kind of sorry about that whole thing. Remember what Joseph said? And he was only able to say it at the end of the story.28:35 What you meant for evil, God meant for good. Child of God, some of you right here today that you're you're probably in that in that place,28:48 that broken place, the pit, you're sold into slavery. God's got a plan. And I love this, I won't get through all of it, but let me just jump down and show you about29:00 the pain is real. Here's what Paul says, Romans chapter 8 verse 18. He says your pain is real, but it's not forever. He says I consider that our present sufferings,29:12 there is a reality to your suffering, they're legit, are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. He says for the creation waits, eager expectation, children of God to29:24 be revealed. He says for the creation was subjected to frustration not by its own choice but by the will of 1 who subjected it in hope. Alright, there it is. Hope has a long shelf life folks. Verse 21,29:36 that creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into freedom and the glory of the children of God. Now listen to this. Right now, the whole creation has been groaning. If you look in29:48 Romans chapter 8, 3 things groan. Creation groans, children of God groan, and the spirit groans for us. Alright? But notice what he says, we know that the whole creation is groaning as in the pains of childbirth29:59 right up until the present. If you're still groaning, Paul says that means you just haven't seen the baby yet. How many of you30:11 have kids in here? Have you I remember that first time I was in the waiting room, Gina and I had been through the classes where I was supposed to be the coach and help her know how to breathe and that didn't turn out30:22 that well. You know, and she's going through the pain and she's going through that, and I'm like, honey you just got you just got to breathe and I'm feeding her ice chips and she's kind of tilting that head, giving me30:32 that side eye. Right, you know what I'm talking about? Why don't you breathe? Then they come in and they say hey, do you want the epidural? And I look at her and say, baby let's think through this, this 5000 dollar30:43 decision. And her head starts spinning around in the exorcist.30:56 And all those ice chips I've been spitting, I've been feeding her, she's spitting them out like a 50 caliber machine gun around the room out heading for the corner, you know what I'm talking about. The epidural shows up31:09 and my girl comes back. But even that wasn't the best. It's when all of a sudden you get to hold that baby and it's all smiles.31:24 Child of God, there's some of you you're groaning right now. That just means we haven't seen the baby yet, because Paul says there's a glory31:36 that is to be revealed for those who are in Christ. I want to invite everybody just to bow their heads. Some of you are absolutely going through some stuff.31:50 You're going through some stuff that if we had the choice or an opportunity to choose, we wouldn't go through it. We'd reject it, we'd say no. But God's got a32:02 purpose, I will promise you this, if you're a child of God, there is a synergy that is going on in your life between those good things and those bad things, the pain, the sorrow, the problems,32:14 and God is doing a special work in your life that if it weren't for the pain, weren't for the problem, we wouldn't be able to see the good.32:27 Just like a cake, not all the ingredients are good, but God can cause all of them to work together for the good.32:40 God thank you for the reminder that we are children of God. That when we go through things that we don't understand, you've got a plan.32:52 God, my prayer is that there's people in this room, our altar is gonna be open in a second. They need to come and pray with some somebody or just pray at the altar that they would take that step. God as we leave here, my33:04 prayer is that we all say, God I don't get it, I would have never chosen it, but I'm gonna believe that you're doing something special through the problems,33:17 because of your promise. In Jesus' name we pray, amen and amen.In this video 0:00 God's Purpose in Our Pain
