The Four Cs: Christ, Capitalism, Constitution, and Children 0:03 Good morning. Welcome to the Morning Muse. I am your host, Russell Gray. Excited to be with you here today, coming to you from my new office. I think this is maybe the second muse that I've done in my new office. And one0:12 of the things I did, if you ever get a chance to see me on a video, is I have decorated my office, my backdrop with a theme from the founding of the United States. I've got the Declaration of Independence. I've got0:24 the Constitution. I've got the Bill of Rights. I've got a picture, the famous painting of the signers of the declaration of independence. I've actually got a replica flintlock, operational... Fully0:36 operational muzzle loading flintlock revolutionary war rifle. I've got a copy of the Statue of Liberty. I've got a quote from Ronald Reagan saying that freedom is only one generation away from extinction. We don't pass0:48 it on to our children in the bloodstream, but we've got to teach them about our country. We've got to teach them about our constitution. We've got to teach them about what freedom is, how valuable freedom is,1:00 and how to fight and contend and protect and preserve freedom. Now, of course, that drives into policy, and policy often turns into politics, and politics can be very divisive. I think1:12 politics has turned very divisive for the purpose of dividing us in such a way that people who want political power can divide Main Street and take that political power. I'm not necessarily a big fan1:24 of the two party system, but it is what it is. And I'm not here to talk about how anybody should believe in terms of policy. When I talk about investing and I talk about business, I do examine policy, and I
1:36 think about how policy affects daily life. And I do think that everything, even scripture, scripture is full of policy. Moses had to write policy. So policy
1:52 withstood Peter to his face, which was pretty bold considering Peter was one of the original apostles or original disciples spending three years with Jesus, and Paul was a latecomer and
2:04 never spent any time with Jesus, at least not when Jesus was here. I know... I think he had time with Jesus after Jesus's resurrection when Paul was being discipled. That's least the way I understand it. But the
2:16 point is is that it was pretty bold for Paul to come up and withstand Peter to his face as the way, at least my new King James version says it as I recall it. And And so I think the reality is we're gonna have
2:27 disagreements from time to time. So I'm not here to stir up controversy. I'm just here to talk about the things that I think are important because I do feel a little bit more like a founding father at this season of my
2:37 life. I don't know where you are in your journey, but I'm a dad. My kids are all grown well into their thirties, forties, and even one in the fifties. And then I've got all these grandchildren, and I look at the world
2:49 and I look at the world that I've seen in my lifetime. I look at the world my children are operating in. I look at the world my grandchildren are gonna grow up into, and I wonder what life is gonna be like for their
2:59 children's children when their grandparents themselves. And so I record these muses partly for my own progeny so that my descendants, will know who I was, who will
3:11 know what I thought, know that I thought about them, and that things I chose to do with my life were intended to do my part in making the world better for them in some way, shape, or form. And so to me,
3:23 the United States of America is important. The constitution is important. There's four c's that I'm very interested in promoting right now. Number one is Christ. That's why I do the morning muses. That's why I have the
3:35 Christian capitalist show. I share the things that I've learned in my Christian journey with the hopes that they will encourage other people to embark upon that Christian journey, to really dig in and lean
3:47 into that Christian journey, and also themselves to share the things that they've learned in their Christian journey, because I think we we learn from each other. We can learn from each other's experiences. And today,
3:56 it's so easy to share the things that we're learning. And, you know, you never know. You you may not have a huge audience. That's okay. As long as you affect even one or two lives out there, you never know what that
4:08 can turn into. So I think it's it's worth the effort, and just preparing is really a great exercise and getting your thoughts together. And you know, if nobody gets anything out of this except me, it's still worth
4:20 doing and I enjoy doing it. So hope you really enjoy it, and if you do send me an email feedback at russell gray dot com, let me know. And if you disagree, let me know that too. I'd love to hear your feedback, good, bad,
4:26 or ugly. Disagree, let me know that too. I'd love to hear your feedback, good, bad, or ugly. So crisis number one. Number two is capitalism. I think that capitalism is a
4:38 natural expression of being fruitful and multiplying and loving your neighbor as yourself. If you want to eat, you need to produce. And if you're going to produce, you
4:50 should produce abundance because you're excellent. And when you create that abundance, you not only enjoy personal prosperity, but you create goods and services that are a benefit to your
5:01 fellow man. So when you think about the bible and you think about all of human society, it's all organized around economics. Being productive, producing the things that sustain human life,
5:13 distributing them, creating markets. I mean, it gets more complex, but the essence of it is people get up every day hungry. They have needs, and people who are productive meet those needs, and then there's an exchange of
5:25 value, and that's really what capitalism is. Beyond that's the constitution. The constitution is a system of government that protects and promotes capitalism, allows people the right to own property, to be productive,
5:37 to enter into contracts, and of course, it also protects the ability of people to do what I'm doing right now, which is to put their mouth on a microphone or put their pen to paper or to otherwise communicate in such a
5:49 way to share ideas, to preach the gospel of Christ, to encourage people in good ideas, with the idea that ideas turn into actions, actions turn into results. If we wanna make the world better,
6:01 we start with the first amendment, which is basically sharing our thoughts. And sometimes we don't agree with each other, and that's okay, because iron sharpens iron. And as we contend back and forth and
6:13 debate, especially if we can do it civilly, then rather than tear things down, we actually build things up, because we come to a deeper understanding. I may have a lot of passion for a viewpoint that I
6:25 haven't thought that deeply on, and all of a sudden I'm out there running my mouth and somebody says, hey, Russ. I don't think you've really thought this all the way through. Have you considered? And all sudden, I go to
6:36 the next level in my understanding, because somebody who has a deeper understanding of a subject matter enlightened me, or perhaps the other way around. Right? So I think that those things are all very good, and those
6:47 things are all protected by the constitution. If you've never read it, it's not a very big document. I encourage you to read it and really contemplate what it actually does for you in your daily life and the
6:59 importance of protecting it and teaching our children, which is the fourth c. Because train up your children in the way they should go. When they're old, they won't depart from it. Ronald Reagan's quote about the next
7:10 generation, we're only one generation away from losing freedom. I think if you look in the old testament, it talks about making sure that you train your children in the precepts of the Lord. Write the law on the doorpost
The Responsibility of Christians to Engage Society
7:22 so you see it coming and going. That's why I have these visual aids all over my office just to remind me who I am, what I stand for, what I believe in, who I aspire to be, and hold myself accountable for
7:34 those times that I fall short, which unfortunately are more often than I'd like to admit, but I think that's probably the human experience. So I think about this movie, A Few Good Men with Jack Nicholson. If you've seen
7:45 it, there's this famous portion where Nicholson is talking about being that man on the wall just like the watchman in Psalm one twenty seven. And that people
7:57 count on him to be on that wall. They enjoy their life because he's their standing guard. And so I think there's a place in society for people to do that. And, of course, he took it to an extreme
8:09 and he was exposed in that for having done something wrong and lying about it to cover it up. But the principle that he was espousing, and this is why it was such an interesting movie, is
8:21 because he was doing something good. He was doing something noble, but he took that duty to an extreme and actually ended up violating the very constitution, if you will, that he
8:33 vowed to protect because he ended up taking somebody's life. So I I don't wanna be a spoiler. Probably already did. Sorry about that. But in case you've never seen it, I encourage you to go
8:45 see it. So the point is is that as Christians, we either have the attitude that we're responsible, and I think that there's not enough people that feel that way in my opinion. I could be wrong. And then there's
8:57 the people who have the attitude, hey, I'm just gonna take care of myself. I'm gonna mind my own business. Somebody will figure it out. If it's important, somebody else will figure it out. And I think that that's true.
9:08 The problem is is will the somebody who picks up the mantle to figure it out, figure it out in a way that you're going to like and agree with? And if not, you may wake up one day as I think we have, and say all these
9:20 areas where we didn't stand up, somebody else did. And now all of a sudden, look how our schools are running. Look what they're teaching our children. Look at the way our media works. Look at the way our entertainment
9:32 works. Look at the way our marketplace works. Our country works. And that's because I think a lot of people became so heavenly minded. They weren't really participating in what was going on here on earth. And I'm not
9:44 sure that that's... At least for me, I feel like I have a responsibility to be engaged in the here and now. I'm not saying that takes me away from a heavenly focus. I think it's because I have a
9:55 heavenly focus that I wanna be involved in the here and now. So I think abdicating is a very dangerous position for Christians to take. So I wanna read a
10:07 couple of scriptures here real quick because I wanted before I just drew a conclusion based on my recollection, I wanna do a quick little study and say, well, doesn't the Bible say mind your own business? So let's take a
10:19 look at some of these scriptures. So in first Thessalonians chapter four verse eleven and twelve, it says, Paul is writing. He says, to aspire to live quietly and to mind your own affairs and to work with your hands as
10:30 we instructed you so that you may walk properly before outsiders, people who are non Christians, and be dependent on no one. Alright? So that you could use that scripture to argue, hey, we should just mind
10:42 our own business. In second Thessalonians three eleven and twelve, Paul writes, for we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work but busy bodies. Now such
10:54 persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. To me, this is about personal responsibility. So I think
11:05 that it starts with minding your own business, but it doesn't end there. So I'm not talking
11:18 then to use that as a platform or a basis to go out there and contend, if you will, for good ideas in the marketplace. Philippians chapter two verses three and four
11:30 says, do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his
11:42 own interests, but also to the interests of others. Okay. So once you're not a burden on other people because you're taking care of your own business, then the next
11:54 level up is to look out not only for your own interest, but also for the interest of others. In Galatians chapter six verse two, Paul exhorts, bear one another's burdens and so
12:05 fulfill the law of Christ. Jeremiah chapter twenty nine verse seven. Seek the welfare of the city where God has sent you even in exile. You know, and
12:17 if you think about it in Philippians chapter three verse twenty, it says, but our citizenship is in heaven. And from it, we await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. First
12:29 Peter two eleven says, beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh which wage war against your soul. Okay. So you can
12:41 see then that it's pretty clear that in some ways you could make the argument that Christians are in exile on this earth until we get to go home to heaven. And so if you look at this life
12:53 experience that we have here on earth, well, we're being heavenly focused and heavenly minded and we're citizens of heaven and strangers and sojourners on earth. Jeremiah twenty nine seven going back to that says,
13:05 seek the welfare of the city where God has sent you even in exile. And so I think as Christians, at least just speaking for myself and I'm sharing with you why I believe this, have not only
13:17 an opportunity, but we have an obligation to be part of that group of people that is actively involved in society today representing
13:29 Christ and for me, capitalism, the constitution, and especially with the focus on preparing the next generation. So I think that number one is being productive. Earning your keep don't be a
13:41 burden and build up some surplus. But the idea that surplus isn't the goal. Right? Like, the rich man who had a big harvest and then just hoarded all the money and
13:52 retired. I don't think God calls us to retire. I know there's a lot of people in the financial space that think retirement is the ultimate goal, but I don't know that I see retirement,
14:04 at least in pursuing a life of leisure, as really being what God calls us to do. I I I think I personally would have a very difficult time just retiring and just minding my
14:16 own business and entertaining myself and enjoying life. And again, I'm not passing judgment on anybody else. I'm just saying for me, I would have a very difficult time with that. I feel like my responsibility
14:29 is to just continue to contribute. If I don't have to worry about money anymore, then that's one less thing and that's great, but that doesn't mean that the purpose of the money is just for me to live a self indulgent
14:41 life. Again, that's me not judging anybody else. You take that up with the Lord, look in the scripture for yourself. But the other part is, I look in Matthew chapter five verses thirteen through sixteen where Jesus talks
14:52 about us being salt and light, And to me, that applies not only how we run our businesses and how we invest, how we hire and serve customers, but it's also about interacting
15:04 in society in such a way that you know, salt to me makes me thirsty. So if I'm the salt in an environment, I should be making people thirsty for the living water, which is Jesus Christ. If I'm not
15:16 living that way, if the people around me aren't seeing in me that light, if that they don't see that revelation of who Christ is and his love, then I feel like I've gotta improve a
15:28 little bit. And candidly, I'm I'm working on that right now because I felt like there was a whole season of my life where I just set all that aside, and I became really honed in on being part of that mind
15:40 your own business crowd. And I thought that, you know, someday I'll just mind my own business, and then somewhere down the road, I'll be able to mix in this other stuff. It was a two step. And today, I've become
15:51 convinced, and I wish I would have listened to something like this when I was a younger man, that in fact I should have been doing it the whole time. And I got off track. I think I started out strong. I got caught up in
16:03 making money and doing business. Candidly, you know, I I left some of the fellowship that I was in and the people I was involved with and got involved with other people. And they they were
16:15 fine people, but they didn't look at the world the way I looked at the world. And I woke up one day and realized how far off track I'd gotten. I thought I would be the influencer, and I turned up be the influency. And so
16:26 now I'm much more cautious about that today. And so I think that when Christians own businesses, they lead organizations, they build media, which of course anybody now can do, they keep their
16:38 voice active in the culture. They represent Christ in the culture, and I think that we want to do that. When we don't do that, then we leave a void. And sadly, as I mentioned before, I think that
16:50 void ends up being filled by people that bring in ideas that are even potentially antithetical to what it is to be a Christian, especially a Christian capitalist. And so
Scriptural Call to Do Good and Expose Darkness
17:02 I'm I'm just encouraging you that you wanna be maybe more engaged in standing on that wall, and, you know, you're not standing there with an AR fifteen. You're not standing there with a sword,
17:14 but you're standing there with the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God as it says in Ephesians. So the responsible citizen, if you will, in modern society, And it's really not
17:26 about political parties. It's really not even about political platforms. You're gonna pick out the things and the people that you believe in. I I hope that you do that based on a biblical worldview and
17:38 really spend some time studying that. Again, I think we can all improve in that area. It's so easy to just categorize the world as what's going on in the political environment, and then what's going on in the
17:49 marketplace, and then what's going on at church, and keep all those things kinda separate. But I I don't think that that's really the Christian life. My mistake, if I can confess that to you, is that I had all those
18:01 things parsed and then I dealt with them in silos, and I really didn't have that integrated life that I'm working on today. And again, I just wish that I would have been more
18:12 attentive maybe to the voices that were around me that were encouraging me that when I wasn't paying attention. And certainly, I wanna be one of those voices especially for younger people coming up.
18:24 So James chapter four verse seventeen says, so whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it for him, it is sin.
18:36 That's pretty harsh. But if I know that I'm supposed to speak up, if I know that I'm supposed to say something, if I know that I'm supposed to represent, be the salt and the light, and I don't do it given the
18:47 opportunity, James makes it pretty clear what that is and that's New Testament not old. Proverbs twenty four verses eleven and twelve says, rescue those who are being taken away to death. Hold
18:58 back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. And if you say, behold, we did not know this, does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch
19:10 over your soul know it? And will he not repay man according to his work? Wow. So, again, this idea that if you're
19:22 aware, you have a role to play and you abdicate. I'm not saying go do something God didn't call you to do. But if you feel the Holy Spirit moving, like,
19:34 that's what I try to be really sensitive to right now is, like, Lord, what do you want me to do? Do I have a role here? Should I speak up? Should I stand up? Should I take action? Should I support?
19:46 Should I pray? What should I do? And then as James says, if I know what to do and then don't do it, that's a problem. And then if I say, well, it really doesn't matter. It doesn't... I don't matter.
19:58 I can't make a difference, you know. Then Proverbs is saying, well, you kinda can't. Then Isaiah chapter one verse seventeen says, learn to do good. Do good. Seek justice.
20:10 Correct oppression. Bring justice to the fatherless. Plead the widow's cause. Okay. Well you can do that on an individual basis, and I think we all should. But I also think that we can do it on a political basis. Right?
20:21 It's okay. I mean, we certainly should be voting because we have that right, and our founders paid a big price to give us that right. We should also, I think, be doing what we can to promote
20:33 ideas, policy ideas that we believe in. You know, again, I'm not here to tell anybody what to believe politically. I I say what I believe and you can decide if you believe or not. I believe in capitalism. I believe in
20:45 the constitution. I believe in private property. I believe in freedom of speech. I believe in personal responsibility. I believe in those things. And so I support things and people and efforts and policies and
20:57 politicians that I think are doing the best job, maybe not a great job, but better than the options of the things that are gonna promote that. And part of that is how I make the world better for
21:09 my children. The flip side of it in Ephesians chapter five verse eleven says, take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. Well, I don't need to tell you that
21:21 there are certain policies out there that are antithetical, I think, to Christian values, most notably the sanctity of human life. Right? So I know
21:33 there are people out there who somehow are able to parse that out, somehow say that it's okay. It's... I don't know. I have a hard time with that one myself. Again, not trying to pass judgment on
21:45 anybody. I'll leave that up to the Lord. But I think for me, when I see something in the political process or even in the process or even in the policy within a company or an organization, a business, something said in
21:56 media, things that influencers say or do that I think are unfruitful works of darkness, I've got to take no part in that. Not only do I need to take no part in it, but I
22:08 instead expose them and shine light and say, hey, this thing is not right. This thing is not good. Well, that takes a little bit of courage. Be willing to take on some criticism. And some of these people, like you say
22:19 things and people, they attack you. They come after you. These ad hominem attacks. They attack your character, your motives. They don't just have an intellectual debate with you. Say, oh, well, I disagree with
22:31 you because of this that or the other thing. It's not about logic. It isn't about science. It's just about name calling. There's a lot of that right now. I think that especially in social media, you get people can hide
22:43 behind these avatars. You don't even know who they are and they come after you. But I think that what I'm seeing here, and I probably need to step up in this regard a little bit, we have an obligation
22:55 to raise up our voices. Unfortunately, in the United States of America, we also have that right, and I think it's one we need to use. And then leading into that, Esther chapter four verse fourteen says, for if you keep
23:07 silent at this time, when Esther had a chance, she had some influence over the king. It says, for if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise from the Jews from another place.
Romans 13, Obeying God Rather Than Men
23:20 But you and your father's house will perish and who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this. And so
23:32 I think that, you know, you never know. Obviously, Esther probably didn't think she was gonna be a pivotal person in the history of the Jews, but she turned out to be. She was put in that position
23:43 for such a time as this. And so then I wanna kinda hit the... What I call the elephant in the room when it comes to especially anything regarding the government is Romans chapter thirteen verses one through four. It
23:55 says, let every person be subject to the governing authorities for there is no authority except from God. And those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities, resist
24:07 I
24:21 really want to talk I really want to talk right now but I'm gonna keep reading. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good and you will receive
24:32 his, the person in authority, approval for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid for he does not
24:44 bear the sword in vain. That's police power. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Alright. So
24:56 this is the argument that a lot of people use to submit to a corrupt government, to submit to a tyrannical government,
25:09 to submit to an abusive government. And our founders struggled with this issue in the society. The founders themselves mostly didn't. The founders
25:21 did not let this inhibit them. But when I looked at US history, there was a sermon written by a guy named Jonathan Mayhew, and I think it was in seventeen fifty. And that
25:32 seventeen fifty sermon came sixteen years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence and he specifically took on Romans thirteen.
25:44 And, you know, again, I'm not a theologian. I don't have a seminary degree. I'm just a guy that reads the bible and tries to figure out what it means, you know, to me and what God
25:56 is saying to me. I trust that the Holy Spirit will open the eyes of my understanding. So I'm sharing with you what I think. And where it says for rulers are not a terror to good conduct but
26:08 to bad. Well, if they're supporting what's bad like works of darkness, then I can't have anything to do with it. Then it says, then do what is good for you will receive his approval
26:20 person who's in authority for his God's servant for your good. But that's assuming, I think, that the ruler is doing something good. Now the counterargument is that in that
26:32 time, Paul was writing this in Nero who was terrible, very tyrannical, and certainly very hostile towards Christians was in charge. And so if you just read
26:44 that by itself, I think you could be persuaded to go either way. I don't think you're wrong if you lean towards submission, and I don't think you're wrong if you would lead towards resisting. And I think the
26:55 tie breaker for me, and this is just for me, is Acts chapter five verse twenty nine when Peter said and the apostles answered, we must obey God rather than men. And so if you take that one verse
27:08 and go back to Romans thirteen and then think about what Jonathan Mayhew, the pastor, the preacher, the reverend from seventeen fifty wrote, I think that we
27:19 have an obligation to stand up for the people who are being oppressed by a tyrannical government, to resist a tyrannical government, and to continue to contend for freedom.
27:31 In our case, that major resistance was done because we pushed off the king and we established a sovereign nation where individuals have freedom. Our declaration of independence
27:44 acknowledges that all men are created equal and do by their creator with unalienable rights, rights that don't come from government but come from God. And then you look at Peter
27:56 saying we must obey God rather than men. I think the constitution gives us a framework to stand up for freedom and do it in a biblical way. You
28:08 may disagree and that's okay, but I'm just telling you where I'm coming from and why the constitution is so important to me. And so anytime anything is going on in the United States and I give a speech at this in a
28:18 mastermind and and it was, I think, fairly well received by people who study this stuff and think about it. And the idea is that what is it to be an American? It's not an ethnicity, clearly.
28:31 It isn't a faith, really. What it is is it is a acceptance of the document, the founding document, the principles of the founding document,
28:43 which is the constitution and the Bill of Rights. And so to me, to be an American is to believe in and stand up for and protect and that's why we have everybody who goes into
28:54 government swear an oath to uphold, protect and preserve the constitution. Now I I understand that there is some room for interpretation but not a ton. I mean some of the basics are there and I think we
29:06 twist things a little bit. So again, I'm not here to get political but I am saying if if we're gonna be in America... It's like if you're gonna be a Christian, you kinda have to believe in the Bible. Right? Because the
29:18 Bible is the word of God. John chapter one says that Jesus is the word of God in the flesh, and it's pretty hard. I don't see how you can call yourself a Christian if
29:29 you don't believe in in the Bible. Well, I don't see how you can call yourself an American if you don't believe in the constitution. I think that for me, the principle is there either way. I don't think being a
29:41 Christian is antithetical to being someone who's an American. I don't think being an American is antithetical to being a Christian. I think those two come together. I think you add that to capitalism.
29:53 And so I guess I'd call myself a Christian constitutionalist capitalist. And I think that we have an obligation because of that to be engaged with society
