0:04 The following program is prerecorded.0:17 From the Hope Center in Plano, Texas, this is Hope in the Night, late night talk radio offering biblical hope and practical help. On the air now for 30 years. I'm Michael0:29 Hill here with author and speaker June Hunt. We wanna help you, and we wanna help you help others. We're gonna jump right in there because tonight's0:41 topic is so important. Tonight, the keys for living we're talking about are suicide prevention, hope when life seems0:53 hopeless. And June, I was reading through the keys, and 2 of them really struck me, misconceptions in the keys, and I want our listeners to really listen1:05 to this. 1 misconception is people who talk about suicide won't really do it, And the truth is an estimated 80 percent of people who die by suicide gave clues or warnings1:17 to friends or family. Therefore, we must take any threat of suicide seriously. Someone who talks about suicide gives the others the opportunity to intervene. And Hope for the Heart1:28 family, listen to this misconception number 2. You should never talk about suicide with the depressed. That's a misconception that it goes on to say people, it could give them ideas. But1:40 the truth is talking about suicide doesn't create suicidal thoughts. For a struggle or having someone to talk with can be a powerful preventative. Asking direct1:52 questions and discussing suicide is 1 of the most helpful things you can do to prevent suicide. And June, I know there are characters in the Bible who committed2:04 suicide, and we have a whole hour talk just between you and I about suicide in the Bible and characters who did. But what I want to know tonight is what is God's heart2:16 on suicide? Can you enlighten us?2:21 Well, as I think about what we need to know, and I'm glad that you said God's heart,2:35 Let me say it this way. In our keys, we have 10 biblical reasons to have hope and to keep living.2:47 Number 1, it's God's provision of rest and hope. In other words, there are things that2:59 God provides for us. And Psalm 60 two:five says, Yes, my3:11 soul find rest in God. My hope comes from him. So He is to be the source of our hope. That is His3:25 pleasure. That is His provision for us. My hope comes from Him. That's again Psalm 62 verse 5. Number 2,3:38 it deals with God's ability to heal your hurts. And you claim Jeremiah 17 14, Heal me, O Lord, and3:50 I will be healed. I'm going repeat it short. Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed. Healed we need to4:02 qualify, or I think it's I want to say there are times when there is a physical illness and4:14 there needs I mean, you can get the flu and all kinds of things that could change your whole disposition. But there are4:26 other ways of receiving healing. It's not just like a physical illness. It can be4:38 even sick thinking where you're not thinking well at all or But you still claim Jeremiah4:49 17 14, Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed when he heals. Then number 3, it deals with God's offer of inner peace. Now5:01 this is huge. In Philippians 4 verses 6 and 7, this is for5:13 many people. They memorize the scripture. They will read the scripture over and over every night or every5:24 other day, this type of thing. Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation by prayer and petition. That means asking5:36 God specifically for specific things by prayer and petition with thanksgiving. In other words, you need to be able to thank God5:48 for what he's teaching you through this, how he's using this to change a perspective, to enable you to think as God would want you to think. But6:00 do not be anxious about anything but in every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your request to God. Now listen what happens. And the peace of6:11 God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. That's Philippians 4 6 and 7.6:24 Let me, look at let me just mention, okay, 10 biblical reasons to have hope and to keep on living. Well, God's commandment is6:35 not to kill, not to kill yourself. You shall not murder. That's the shortest 1. Deuteronomy 5 17. It is not God's will for you to take your6:47 life. There's so much more God has for us, and we can talk about that later.7:01 Do you ever struggle to believe that God loves you, that he accepts you, forgives you, and sees you as his precious beloved child? So many people have a distorted picture7:12 of God that he is distant, disappointed, or doesn't care about what's going on in our lives. The truth is God cares about you more than you know. And our keys for living are resources written to address life's most challenging struggles. Would you do me a favor and share those with people that you know that are hurting? I'm10:27 gonna give out our customer support team in the next segment, but we're gonna jump right to our caller now. So get a pen and paper because June's gonna call out some scriptures. You're gonna wanna write those down, and10:39 you're gonna wanna write that customer support number down. June, our caller comes to us and then is a repeat caller from the great state of Mississippi listening to us online. Please welcome Jeff back to the10:51 program.10:52 Well, we do welcome you back, Jeff. We've talked now twice and I care about your life and11:04 God has a right kind of living of life for you. So what's going on right now?11:13 Hi, June. May I Hi. When when I'm when I'm alone in my room, which I spend the majority of my time in, I write down my thoughts. I read you what I wrote?11:26 Yes. I would like for you to.11:28 Just a moment. It's so blatantly obvious. As short of my death, even God can't rescue me from my current11:40 condition. I know all the good book says about him raising the dead and speaking the world into existence is true. But11:52 I've analyzed my situation over, over, and over, and know there's no way out. I'm doomed no matter which way I turn12:04 to commit suicide and my to commit suicide and my faithless state would mean eternal separation from God. To continue living12:16 means either living on the street or going to jail. I wish I'd never been born. Mine is a lonely, miserable existence. His word says he'll never12:28 leave nor forsake us. I know I'm responsible for putting myself in the position I'm in, but it certainly feels like he's turning a dead ear to my cries for help.12:40 What absolutely abuts my very soul is knowing it didn't have to be this way. I want to die. I beg God every day to take my life, yet every day I wake up12:51 through all this worry and pain. If I did die, there's absolutely no 1 who would even claim my body. Oh my god. I'm so tired13:03 of living like this. I walk around with an ever present pain in my tummy, and I can't sleep longer than a couple of hours at a time. Please pray that God will have mercy on13:15 me and take me home. Mhmm. I13:22 hear your words. I hear the fatalism. You know, you know, even God cannot13:33 remedy your situation, you're saying. And that that is your perspective. Now there is something13:45 there's a factor here that still has not been factored in, and that is13:57 you do not know what God can do as you are consistent to say, I will do14:09 what God says for me to do and then I will watch what God will do. And I'm saying that because there are so many people who could14:20 identify exactly with what you've said because they've been there. And then they because I've had so many conversations with people who said I14:32 knew I would not be able to go on. I knew I would not make it. And they saw no way out. And that14:44 is usually the phrase, I see no way out. But our god also is the god of the impossible, meaning what we14:56 view as impossible. That is our view. God is not limited to our15:08 own individual circumstances. He is a supernatural God, and he can bring the right person into our lives who15:19 literally can be life changing. He can bring certain situations that even employment, you15:31 know, where you wouldn't even think that God was, acting on your behalf. The the main thing is for you not to15:43 be self destructive yourself, but you say, I'm I can't see what God will do, but I will15:55 not make the choice not to be self destructive. I will not take my life, because I want to16:06 see if, you know, however God wants to deal with my life because he says, he God, the Lord God16:17 says, I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans to give you hope16:29 and a future. So from your limited view, you don't see it, and I get that. But what I'm telling you is16:41 the God that I know and that so many others have come to know would apply that scripture, which16:53 I did not identify what it was. It's Jeremiah 2nine 11 where the God of the Bible says, Jeff, I17:04 know the plans I have for you, Plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.17:17 So your job right now is to maintain walking, making sure you're not doing anything17:29 that would cause the death of your physical body, but literally to know that God does have a17:40 plan. You don't see the plan, but God has the plan. Does that part make sense right now?17:48 It does.17:51 Okay. Yeah. Okay. I I appreciate that. And I can promise you, there there are so many times I mean, I can remember back18:03 when I did not want to live and I I was saying things will never change and that was my line. Things will never change18:15 and I wanted to die. I was a teenager. But the point is, I look back now and18:27 I think, well, is a series of changes. And you and I've talked about that. I've I've used that phrase. Life is a series of changes. Now18:39 he also knows how to put key people or a key person in your life. That's why I asked you about being involved in18:51 a church. We talked about in Memphis. You don't live in Memphis right now. You're in Alabama, but the point is you're not far. And we talked about how you could start19:02 going to a particular strong biblically based church, and there will be people who are godly Christians.19:15 And some, at times, are very, very capable of basically coming into a person's life19:28 and through their resources they can benefit someone who has lost hope or who can't see the way out.19:40 Sometimes it's allowing yourself to be in a place and I'm using the word church because I had said this before,19:51 you've got to give that a chance because there are many ways that individuals can invest.20:03 Many people enjoy investing in the life of someone that for the temporary time20:15 has lost hope. By the way, I'm going to be seeing somebody tomorrow. This is someone who was working at a hospital and she was doing20:27 a great job. All of a sudden she has been dismissed and she literally is suicidal. Literally suicidal.20:39 And I will be meeting with her tomorrow. Now my point is she's talented. She has20:51 had a number of years working as a nurse, but this has just been a blow to her. There are different21:03 reasons why people at the moment in fact, the person who was telling me is like, do you think, you know, it's like,21:15 if she's with you, do you think that's okay? Or do you think she could be taking her trying to take her life? You know, it's that immediate to intervene. Well,21:27 I'm willing to intervene if I can be of help. Is this part even making sense, what I'm saying?21:37 I'm in a different position than her.21:40 Yes. Are. She's21:41 a with a nursing license So you can turn around tomorrow and get another job.21:48 Locked in the21:50 okay. I'm locked in the jobs that I have currently. And as I told you before, the resume, I can't even get hold get ahold of my resume.22:04 And I22:04 know you yeah. You you do have 1, but you can't get into your home because your former wife will not give you access right now to that resume.22:17 So it's not like you don't have a resume, but and and that makes it difficult. But, you know, God is bigger than a resume. He can he can22:29 affect change when we yield our will to his will, and that's gonna be very important. But22:40 I care that you take God at his word. If he he is the 1 who has his will, his perfect will for you,22:53 and you don't wanna go against that.23:00 No matter what you're facing, there is hope. Sometimes it's hard to believe that. When we face challenges at home, at work, in our family, or maybe a private struggle, it can be hard to see what God is doing.23:12 The good news is you're not alone. If you're facing a difficult life issue, we'd love to help. Now let's get back to our conversation26:50 with June and Jeff.26:53 Well, as I'm listening to you, I hear it's like your spirit is crushed.27:04 You know that things didn't have to be this way, but I want to assure you because some people think,27:16 I don't know where God is. He's not anywhere near. The Bible says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted.27:29 The lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. So, Jeff,27:41 God fortunately is not this kind of remote, almost like a kind of a spirit27:53 thing that doesn't intervene in our lives. When he is very clearly28:05 close to the brokenhearted, right now as you look at your circumstance you don't see the way out. But28:17 he has the way out and that's why it's vital that you literally entrust your life to him.28:29 In fact, I've been thinking about this in the 3 times that we've talked. I'd like to share something with you and28:41 and just get your feedback, and it has to do with you. Well, it really has to do with God's plan for you,28:52 and this is something that God has initiated. When God looks at our lives,29:05 all of our lives, and he has the bill the ability to do that, he sees the wrong choices that29:17 every single 1 of us has made. He sees at times when we have chosen to go against his will.29:29 And the bible is clear that our sin separates us from God. Now we29:41 can't change the past, but we can change the future. We can't change the past in that you and29:53 I both have made wrong choices, things that we would wish we could go back and erase, cancel, get rid of.30:05 Now the why of Jesus, why did, you know, who is Jesus? Why did he come to Earth? He had a30:17 perfect existence in heaven, and yet he chose to come to Earth. Jesus is30:29 God the father, God the son, and that's Jesus, and God the Holy Spirit. So God the son came to Earth knowing that he30:41 was going to literally die on the cross. In other words, he would give his self as God, God the Son. He30:52 would literally die on the cross. His blood was shed for you and me so that and here's the key. Jeff, this is the31:04 most important part. The key is that we humble our hearts and say,31:16 god, I'm willing to entrust my life to you. Lord Jesus, I'm asking31:28 you to come into my life, literally take residence in my life. I'm asking you to come31:40 into my life to be my personal Lord and Savior. I'm going to emphasize this is something I didn't even31:51 know was possible. And there was a point in my life where after 6 months I was finally getting it. I finally understood32:03 this is the role. This is the initial big role that Jesus has32:15 in our lives, and that is if we will humble our hearts and say, God, I've chosen wrong. I need you to take32:27 control. I'm giving you control of my life. Make me the person you want me to be, and we yield our will to his will.32:40 At that point, you become an authentic and authentic Christian. In other words, it's not just32:52 having churchianity going to church. It is Christianity which is Christ. It's Christ in you.33:04 And then what happens when he comes into your life? The Bible is very clear. He begins to33:16 teach us how to think. His his spirit at the same time is working in concert. The the spirit of Christ is33:27 working at the same time as Christ himself is working in our heart. But he will teach you33:39 how to think, And you don't have to see it now, but he has the plan. Our job33:51 is trust in the Lord with all our hearts. Don't try to lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, submit to34:02 him, and he will make your path straight. That's the promise of Proverbs 3 5 and 6. So I'm wondering,34:15 do you believe that God wants you to humble your heart and receive Jesus as your personal Lord and savior?34:26 I was saved 23 years ago. Mhmm. I asked the lord to come into my heart. I taught Sunday school. I was very involved in church, brought my34:38 kids up in church to a major park. We we got out for a while. Mhmm. So I'm saved. I feel like I'm saved not to listen to John34:49 I'm not, you know, I have to I I wonder about my salvation. But I 99 percent of the35:00 time, I feel confident in my salvation.35:05 Mhmm.35:05 But I wonder now, as you've mentioned earlier, where is God in all of this? Mhmm. If he's I'm his child,35:17 why has it come to this? Why I feel like you've abandoned me.35:28 Well, when I've talked with you, you've been truthful with me. Like, you're not in a church right now.35:39 That at least that's what I thought you had told me. But my point is the bible says, do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together and is talking about being35:51 in a church fellowship because there is the I I like to think about it as the iron sharpening iron.36:03 That's where why God wants to use other believers in our lives to sharpen us, to help us to come36:15 alongside. And in other words, when you don't have that body of believers to be a source of36:26 wisdom and strength, it's just I hear what you're saying. You're saying I have. You're saying I have prayed to receive36:38 Jesus as my lord and savior. So I think this is where you literally like, you can have a car and the36:50 car can be helpful. And then all of a sudden you're on the side of the road, with no gas. You have to do the37:01 things that give you the, if you will, the energy, in this case, the gasoline, and you have to37:13 have oil for the engine. You have to have water in the radiator or else the car is not going to function. Correct. If we37:25 and so it's it's getting and that, of course, is just a physical metaphor I'm giving you. But many times,37:37 I can I have an image? If imagine you having a a car and you're saying, well, yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna use this37:49 car. And you go to the back of the car, ping it the whole way. You don't not gonna get real far, but that38:00 we have to literally use what is needful for the car it needs. And this is whereShow more
