4:09 Good morning, church. You glad you're in God's house? Man, it is so good to be in God's house and to worship together. If you happen to be new with us a couple of weeks ago, we began a brand new series entitled
4:21 blessed. We're walking through the beatitudes. Our life group are walking through the entire sermon on the mount, and the last month in August, we started a series and we want to connect these two together. We put these
4:32 two together for a reason. A series called whatever, winning the battle in your mind from Philippians chapter four verse eight. If you missed any of those, I wanna encourage you. Go look at those online. Just go to
4:42 Cottonwood Creek dot TV. You can see all of those, and this... Here's the idea, is once we begin to win the battle in our mind, then we wanna move it to our heart. And so the last series was about getting it right here.
4:53 This series is about getting it right here. We're talking about being blessed, the beatitudes from the inside out. We'll put an image up that I put up every week. We've been in the middle of this series. Just kind of
5:05 telling you where we're going in this series. It started off week one with I need God. Man, blessed are those who are poor in spirit. Last week, if you missed it, it's simply it's okay to
5:17 hurt. How many of you know it's okay to hurt? Greg just talked about that. Today, we're talking about the idea of meekness which is power under control. Then, the next week, we're going to talk about staying hungry for
5:28 god. Man, how do I grow in my relationship with god? Then, we're going to talk about the idea. I'm going to choose mercy even when people don't deserve mercy. Then, we're gonna do everything we can to move to this
5:40 last idea. Once I have it right here and I have it right here, I can stand my ground. This moves us towards spiritual courage that regardless of what comes our way,
5:52 that's where we're gonna end this series. How do I stand when people insult me or talk badly about me or about the faith or about Christianity or about my church? How do I stand my ground? What about it? He... Jesus
6:03 takes it a little further. What how do I stand strong when I'm being persecuted? When I lose a job for my faith. That's where we're headed, but today we're gonna talk about this idea of power
6:15 under control. We would know that word as meekness or gentleness or even humility. Let's go to Matthew chapter five and this is what Jesus said, one verse. He
6:27 says, blessed are the meek. Alright? That is power or strength that is totally controlled. Now, here's a result when we are meek for they will
6:38 inherit the earth. Man, I I love that idea, but a lot of times we think, well, what is meekness look like in real life? Sadly today, think a lot of people think meekness is weakness. You've probably heard that
6:50 before. We thank Jesus. Oh, he's the lamb of God. He's so sweet. He was just so nice. I'm gonna get to that here in a few seconds, but here's the reality. What does meekness look like in everyday life? How
7:02 many of you have kids? How many of had kids? Alright. If you ever were like me, you went out maybe in the in the driveway and you're gonna play basketball against your son. Your son's seven or eight years old and he's
7:12 got a couple of moves on him. But the reality of it is, when he goes to the realm, every time I knew I could have blocked that ball into the neighbor's backyard. How many of you know what I'm talking about?
7:24 But I chose to do this. That's meekness. I could have, but I didn't. If you had daughters been out there, you ever had a daughter that played soccer and you'll let her kick that ball and do
7:36 that fake dive to block it, or maybe you had another little son like I did, Jared. He always loved to wrestle, and he loved to pin me. And and and guess what? I let him pin me. How many of you know what I'm talking
7:47 about? And then he would immediately go run to his siblings and his mom. I just beat dad up. I just beat dad up. I'd go frustrated in there. He didn't beat me up. I let him do that. Right? That is absolutely
7:59 meekness. You have the power, but you choose not to use it. How many of you are married? I know this never happens in your marriage, but there have been times from time to time, Jean and I disagree on something,
8:11 and she'll say something, and boy do I have the perfect response. She teed it up. I'm about to drive it out of the park. Meekness says,
8:25 no. Not gonna say it. Or or or how many of you know people say stupid stuff on social media? You've been scrolling and all of a sudden something puts up there and you're like,
8:37 I've just gotta respond to that and you're like typing it down and you're like, delete. Or text the same way. Man, here
8:49 here's the reality. That is meekness. I could have but I chose not to. I could have but I chose not to. Jesus was our
9:01 greatest example in this. We're going show you pass. I'm going to show you passage here in a second Matthew chapter twenty six. Let me set up the back story. The back story is Jesus has been in the upper room with his
9:11 disciples. They were all gathered there. They had a last meal together. They had a fellowship meal together. He got down and washed the disciples feet. Then he instituted the Lord's Supper. Then they go to the Garden of
9:21 Gethsemane. Judas has gone and he betrayed him. Judas shows up, get Jesus as a kiss. The soldiers take Jesus captive and Peter does the most Peter thing Peter can possibly
9:33 do. Says he pulled out his sword and cut off one of the soldiers ears. How many of you know that story? He goes, you know what? If we're gonna fight this out, here's a great place. Right? We're gonna fight it out, but
9:44 notice what Jesus says and notice what Jesus does. Here it is. Matthew chapter twenty six, Jesus just has just been taken into captivity. Peter has cut a guy's ear off and then
9:56 Jesus looks at Peter and says, hey, Peter, put the sword back in its place. Jesus said to him, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Here look at verse fifty three. He says, do
10:08 you really think I cannot call on my father and he will at once at my disposal have more than twelve legions of angels. What is Jesus
10:19 saying? I don't need your help. Jesus is essentially saying, I could have, but I'm not. I have the power to, but I'm choosing not
10:31 to for a greater good or a greater purpose. Now, I also want you to hear me well. When you look around and you read books and you read articles of who
10:43 Jesus was, so much of what I see presented as who Jesus was is only about his meekness. He was the lamb of God. He was the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the
10:54 world. That's why Jesus knew he had to be be betrayed, delivered in the hands of sinful men so he could be nailed to the cross so you and I might be forgiven of our sins. He could die and rise again. So, that's where
11:05 salvation came from. That's why he said, now is not the time I could have but I chose not to. But a lot of people talk about Jesus and by the time they painted Jesus, it's almost
11:17 as if he wasn't a man. Can I just tell you? Jesus is presented in scriptures as two things. He is a lamb but he is also a lion and
11:29 so guys, I want you to understand that in here. Listen, to become like Jesus doesn't mean we give away the lion. It means that sometimes we act like a lion,
11:41 sometimes we act like a lamb, whatever it is for the greater godly good. That is the difference. And so I don't want you to go out here and a lot of people paint this picture that by the time you read who Jesus is, he's
11:52 basically a woman. And that is not who Jesus was. He was a man. Now, guys, let me tell you in the room, we celebrate masculinity here at Cottonwood Creek. Why? Give
12:04 God a hand on that, and I'll tell you why. Because God celebrated it. Go back to Genesis chapter one. It says, God created them male and female
12:16 and blessed them or celebrated both. So men in the room, I want you to know, when you become like Jesus, you're not just a lamb, you're still a lion. You just know when to be the lamb and when to be the lion.
12:27 There's a difference. Take about Jesus. We all talk about these wonderful things about Jesus, even one credible example here, but how many of you remember Jesus walked in John chapter two? He walked through the temple
12:37 courts one time, saw all the bad things going on, started ripping the whip out, and he turned over tables, right? Man, sometimes, here's what we know... Need to know about meekness. Sometimes meekness
12:49 turns the other cheek. Sometimes it turns over tables. That's what it looks like. You and I just have to know the difference. Man, we have to understand that when he was aligned, Jesus was
13:01 displaying his power. When he was the lamb, Jesus was restraining his power, and we need to learn to absolutely do
13:13 both because Jesus did both. So, the more Christ like we become as men and as lady, there are ladies. There are gonna be times reliance. There'll be some other times that we are lambs.
13:25 I've said this before. I've said it over and over again. I'll keep saying it. You can say anything you want to about me and you'll probably get a response from pastor John Mark.
13:37 You say something about my wife? You just get John Mark. How many of you know what I'm talking about? Men, let me tell you what. We need men to rise
13:49 up who are lambs with their families and lions for their families. We need men that'll rise up and they... That's exactly right.
14:01 That you will be a lamb when you are with your church, but you are a lion for your church. We need men who will rise up. They are lambs with their community and lions for their community. That's
14:13 what true meekness looks like, and Jesus is our example. There are times he's... He he was confronting the Pharisees. There's one time Jesus... Let me a cool story. You can go read it in god's word. So, Jesus just
14:24 ministering in the area and some people came over to him and said, hey, you need to leave. Herod's trying to kill you. I don't know about you but if you know history, Herod was pretty good at killing people. How many of
14:35 you know? Jesus turned and looked at him and said, well, you go tell that fox. I'm gonna be right here doing what I'm doing until I'm finished and then I'm gonna move on. Now, let me tell you what, that's a
14:47 lion. So, you know what? God has put me here. God has placed me here. God wants me to do this. There were other times. Jesus faced them up. There were other times that Jesus, he pronounced, listen,
14:58 woes over entire cities. Woe to you. Woe to you. Woe to you. He faced down the Pharisees. He faced down the hypocrites. He goes, woe to you scribes and Pharisees. But the most
15:10 lying thing Jesus did was die on the cross. He endured the cross despising its shame. So, that's Jesus in the
15:22 New Testament. What about David in the Old Testament? How many of you remember David? Man, David, David was really good at wielding a sword and writing a Psalm. He was a
15:34 lion and a lamb. If you look, you know David's story, he comes to bring some food to his brothers. Goliath's out there mocking the children of God. David hears him mocking the children
15:46 of God says, hey, does someone need to stop that? All the other men were scared. David says, alright. Give me a little sling and a couple of stongs and I'll go fight him and everybody
15:58 went, this isn't gonna go well. David goes out, slays Goliath, literally cuts his head off, spits down his throat. That part's not in
16:10 the Bible. Alright? And they route the Philistines. Let me tell you what, that is David. And then the Saul comes in and says, David, you're awesome. Come lead my army
16:22 and so just time and time and instance after instance, Saul is saying, hey, go slay the Philistines. Go attack this enemy. Go attack these... And David is just doing it over and
16:33 over and over and over again. Man, he is a lion. And then later he's writing a psalm and he's a lamb. They're both in there. Before I'm gonna show you the passage I'm about
16:45 to show you, in first Samuel chapter eighteen, after David has been slaying the Philistines and winning all the battles and over and over again, man, he is just a rock star. Then what happens is is all of a sudden
16:57 Saul is coming into the cities and he says the ladies begin to sing a song. All the problems start with the ladies, but the... That's that's not in the bible either.
17:08 Fall and comfort foods go hand in hand. Grandma's mac and cheese, soup and grilled cheese. But how do you create those cozy moments while still maintaining your health goals? Hero
17:20 Bread can help. Hero Bread's soft, fluffy, flavorful sliced breads, bagels, tortillas, and hero noodles have only zero to five grams net carbs and up to nineteen grams

18:40 I won't be in the atrium today, by the way. No. I'm kidding. I'm gonna offend everybody by the time we're done. No. The ladies, y'all are just doing an incredible job. Y'all are singing a song because Saul is
18:52 rolling into town and the song they sang was Saul has slain his thousands, David his tens of thousands. Uh-oh. Saul from
19:03 that moment on set his heart to kill David, and literally Saul would pursue and chase David around to try to kill him. And let me show you an instance where
19:15 David, that lion that could wield a sword and write a psalm chooses a psalm and meekness over strength. First Samuel chapter twenty four verse two, it
19:27 says this, Saul took about three thousand able young men from all of Israel and set out to look for David and his men. He's going to kill him. Alright? So the justification, we're gonna see this instance
19:39 here. David has the justification to kill Saul because Saul was trying to kill him. David has the opportunity to kill Saul because Saul basically walks into cave where David and his
19:51 men are without any soldiers to protect him. So, a justification, the opportunity, and the power, David has the knife in his hand. Alright? So now let's read on and look at what
20:02 David does. It says, he came to the sheep pens. This is Saul along the way, a cave there. Saul went in to relieve himself. Here's the opportunity. David and his men were far
20:14 back in the cave and the men said to David, this is the day that the Lord spoke of and he said to you, I will give your enemy into your hands for you deal with him as you wish. Now, so here's the opportunity David has
20:26 the power. Then David crept over unnoticed, cut off the corner of Saul's robe. Afterward, David was then conscience stricken for having cut off the corner of his robe, and he said to his men, the Lord forbid that
20:38 I should do such a thing to my master till the lord's appointed or lay my hand on him for he is the anointed of the lord. Now, stop. Full stop. David had the justification.
20:50 He had the opportunity and he had the power but he chose to be a lamb instead of a lion in that moment because at the end of the day, Saul was still king and he didn't want to
21:02 raise his hand against the lord's anointed. Man, that is meekness. Now, I can only imagine and you can read the rest of the story if you want to. How do you think his men felt? They were
21:13 hiding in the cave from that dude. Can you imagine the anticipation, the excitement in their hearts as David is crawling over to Saul with a knife in his hand and he raises it up
21:25 and he cuts the corner of his hem of his garment off, turns around and shows it to the men. You know what the men were doing? All the men were going, no. It's right there. That's where the knife goes. Right? And
21:37 he comes back over, and he's brokenhearted. Man, that is a difference between a man who doesn't understand self control and a man who does. David said, you know what? And you go read it on.
21:49 He says, you know what? I'm gonna let god deal with Saul. I'm not gonna do it myself. David, he was absolutely a vicious warrior,
22:03 But he was a humble servant of the king. Men, we need to be vicious warriors but humble servants to our families. We need to learn to be strong
22:14 enough to make it happen but also strong enough to know when I shouldn't. See, that's what meekness does. That's when meekness says, hey, we're not going to roll this way. You
22:26 can look at other people in scripture. Moses, man, was a powerful dude. He was a courageous dude. Now, he didn't wanna go at first but but Moses showed the courage. He walked into Pharaoh, the most
22:38 powerful man on the face of the earth at the time and he looked at him and says, I got an idea. I've got a word from god. You're gonna let my people go. Pharaoh said, yeah, right. Alright? What what about
22:50 Jonathan? Jonathan was David's best friend. If you look at Saul, Saul... Jonathan was Saul's son. If there was anybody that had a right to the king after King Saul, it was Jonathan. But
23:02 Jonathan, although man, he slayed Philistines, he fought side by side with David, he was a wonderful warrior, a powerful warrior. He looked and saw that the fact that God had anointed David as the next king
23:13 and not him, and so he said, I'm gonna be a loyal servant to you. That's meekness. Boy, you look in the the New Testament, the apostle Paul. Man, we all wanna be the apostle Paul. He went here
23:25 and he went there. He was persecuted. He was mocked. He was insulted. He was laughed at. Man, he was bold in his prophetic utterance and when he was talking to people and what do you say to people, but then it would also
23:37 say, and he was tender hearted, and he was kind hearted, not just to his friends but to everybody else. So, Jesus said, blessed
23:49 are the meek for they shall inherit the kingdom of god. So, let me give you four thoughts today. Let's roll through them. Hopefully, you open your app because I have a lot more examples biblically of here here here's a
24:00 lion part, here's a lamb part, here's a lion part, here's a lamb part. Let me give you four thoughts for every man and every woman in this room on what real meekness looks like in real life.
24:12 Number one, I can be strong without always having to prove it. I can be strong without always having to prove it. Look at it in Proverbs. Proverbs chapter
24:23 sixteen. Here's what it says. It says, better. Everybody say better. Better. In other words, god's way is better. God's value system is better. God's timing is better. There are times when god wants us to be the lion.
24:35 There are times that he wants us to be a lamb. Here's what it says, better a patient person than a warrior. Now that word warrior means someone who has obvious talents in killing you, okay? Be
24:46 patient, alright? One with self control than one who can simply take a city. Said man, we wanna be people that have self control. We don't always
24:58 wanna look for the fight. We don't always be be the lion. Sometimes, we wanna be the lamb. Great example of this is Joseph. You remember Joseph's story? Joseph was kidnapped by his brothers,
25:10 sold into slavery, he was lied about, he was thrown into prison, he was forgotten about in prison, I mean just over and over. Can you imagine the bitterness that you and I would have had through all those seasons saying,
25:22 you know what I should be back in my father's house. He's in a distant land, a distant place. Sure enough, he just stays faithful and serves well wherever he was. Ultimately, ends up to the second to the
25:33 top in all of Egypt And then there's a famine in the land and Joseph's brothers come. Joseph could have killed him. He had the power. He had the authority. He had everything just to say get it done.
25:46 But he chooses not to. Then there comes a time when his father passes away, and a lot of the brothers begin to say, wait, as long as dad was alive, as long as
25:58 dad was alive, Joseph probably wasn't gonna kill us. But now that dad is gone, we're probably done for. Let me show you meekness. Let me show
26:10 you humility. Genesis chapter fifteen verse fifteen, when Joseph's brother saw that their father was dead, They said what if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did. They were
26:22 wrong. They acknowledge it. They were guilty guilty of sin. So they sent word to Joseph saying, hey, your father left these instructions before he died. This is what you are to say to
26:34 Joseph. I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so poorly or badly. Now, please forgive the sins of the servants of god of your father. When
26:46 their message came to Joseph, notice what happened. Joseph wept meekness. Joseph wept but it doesn't stop there. His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him said, we are your slaves.
26:58 They said to Joseph but Joseph said, do not be afraid, Alright? Joseph wouldn't say don't be afraid because I'm powerless. Joseph was saying don't be afraid because I'm gonna do the right
27:09 thing. I'm I'm not powerless. He says, am I in the place of God? He goes, you intended to harm me but God had a bigger cause. He intended it for the good to accomplish what is now
27:21 being done, the saving of many lives. So Joseph had every reason and all the authority and all the power in the world to destroy his brothers but he chose not to.
27:34 Here's number two. I can stand for truth without losing control. That is meekness. I can stand for truth and I want you to hear this. I can
27:45 stand for truth. We live in a culture that they want us to be quiet, but that culture wants us to be quiet so they can speak up.
27:58 Right? Culture's not quiet. Have you noticed that? Who do they want to be quiet? You. They want me. And I love what Paul says in Ephesians chapter four. Here it is. He says, instead
28:10 of being quiet, speaking, I'm verbalizing. I'm articulating. I am saying something. We are not silent. What do we do? We speak the truth. Everybody say truth. This is not
28:22 an opinion. Folks, if it's in God's word, we're gonna have to stand for truth and we're gonna verbalize the truth, but we do it what? In love. He says, and
28:34 we will grow to become in every respect mature as the body of Christ. Now here's what I love. Paul here doesn't make us choose between truth and love.
28:47 See, meekness says, it's both. See, meekness says, I'm gonna speak the truth, the culture, but I'm gonna do it with love. Why?
28:59 Because truth without love is harsh and often times doesn't help. Love without truth harms. It
29:11 hurts our families, it hurts our churches, hurts our culture. So, child of god, listen to this, to be meek, doesn't mean I sit down and shut up.
29:24 Sometimes it means I stand up and speak up but I do it with love. Here's number three. Meekness means I'm gonna fight the right fight
29:35 without making it about me. I'm going to fight the right fight without making it about me. I love Micah chapter six verse eight. Look at what Micah says. Here it is.
29:48 And notice the progression. Progressions from justice to mercy to humility. He, god, has shown you a mortal. What is good? And what does the lord require of you? What does god
29:59 want? We all want to know that. I don't want to know that as a pastor. What does god require me? Here it is. To act justly, that's to do something or say something when it's necessary. To act
30:11 justly, to love mercy, that's how I treat people, alright? Then notice, and to walk humbly with your god. Man, we need to do something. He says,
30:22 act. We need to say something. Let me tell you, as your pastor, I need to protect something. I need to protect someone. I need to protect a lot
30:34 of someone's, and I do that with both truth and love, but I do it with my actions. What I say and what I do. So I want you to know a lot a lot
30:46 of times people think convictions and humility don't go together. They're they're not enemies, folks. When we speak with our convictions, the truth of God,
30:59 we are stepping out, but we wanna do it with humility, and we wanna do it with love. Here's number four. I love this. Here's how we're gonna close. Meekness says I can do what is
31:11 right and then trust God with the results. Meekness says I can do what is right and trust God with the results. Here it is. Back to Matthew chapter five verse five.
31:23 Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. The world says, go get it.
31:36 The world says, go take it. The world says, fight for it. Jesus says, do the right thing and inherit
31:47 it. Child of God, as we even move into an election season, a lot of things are gonna be said, a lot of things are gonna be done. Man, we have to look and say and speak the truth, but we do it
31:59 with love. Meekness means I have all the power in the world to get it done, but I don't have to.
32:13 Meekness says, I don't have to become evil to defeat evil. I just have to do the right thing. Let's pray.
32:26 God, thank you so much for this day. God, in prepping for this sermon, man, my heart is just here to pray for the men in this room. That we would be lions
32:38 for our families. Lambs with our families. Lions for our church. Lambs with our church. Lions for our community. Lambs with
32:49 our community. For the ladies in the room, that they would be lions for their family, lambs with their family. Lions for the church,
33:01 lambs with the church. Lions for the community, lambs with the community. In Jesus' name we pray, amen and amen.
