Weekly Wisdom: Your Legacy

Scripture

“Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

Devotional

Can you fathom God asking you to sacrifice your own child? This request seems so contrary to God’s character, but it’s what He called Abraham to do. Because of Abraham’s obedience, God displayed His faithfulness by sending an angel to save his son, Isaac.

Here are four lessons from Abraham’s story that we can teach our children and mentees.

1. Obey God promptly: When God called Abraham, he obeyed without a hint of hesitation. The Word states, “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” (Hebrews 11:8)

2. Trust God completely: Even though God’s plan did not make sense to Abraham, He still chose to trust Him and follow through.

3. See God accurately: Abraham held on to God’s promises and believed that God was who He said He was.

4. Know God personally: If Abraham didn’t have a close relationship with God, it’s improbable that he would have been obedient. Since he knew God’s character and faithfulness, he was ready to do whatever God called him to do.

There’s nothing more important as a mentor or parent than leaving a spiritual legacy. Actions speak louder than words, so commit today to be an example of faith!

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray for anyone who may be looking to me as an example of faith. I pray they may see the light of who You are within me. Please bless me with discernment as I provide guidance. In Jesus' name, Amen.
