5 prayers for surgery and how to support a loved one through it

While we don't know exactly how many people undergo surgery, research suggests that doctors perform over 234 million surgeries annually worldwide.

Some of those are extensive and risky, while others are routine and minimally invasive. But no matter their scale, all surgeries are stressful. When you, a friend, or a family member is having surgery, it's natural to worry about potential complications or a difficult post-surgery healing period.

But with God by your side, you don't have to fear alone. As our Creator, God is always watching out for us. To reach Him, you only need to pray. So to help you seek comfort and faith in this stressful time, we'd like to share six surgeon's prayers in this article.

How to support a loved one through surgery

In Galatians 6:2, we're commanded to "bear one another's burdens" to fulfill the law of Christ. But bearing another's burden doesn't mean fixing their problems. Instead, it means reducing someone's emotional and physical load so they can face challenges with ease.

If you're currently supporting someone through surgery, this may ring true for you. Though you may want to heal a loved one going through surgery yourself, you can't.

Instead, you can support them by:

1. Offering emotional support

Emotional support is a verbal and nonverbal way of communicating concern for someone by offering comfort, an empathetic ear, and reassurance.

As surgery is a stressful event, it can be an emotionally difficult burden to carry. When you provide emotional support to someone, you provide a safe and empathetic environment for them to process that burden. Because, as T.A Webb first wrote in Let's Hear It For The Boy: "a burden shared is a burden halved."

Providing emotional support isn't something you can just do once. Instead, you need to make a continuous effort to provide emotional support to your loved one by:

  • Listening to them
  • Making time for them
  • Asking them what they need
  • Staying in tune with their emotions
  • Checking in with them regularly
  • Discussing any concerns or fears they raise

Remember — emotional support looks different for everyone. While some people find comfort in discussing their fears, others find comfort in actions like hugging or listening to healing music.

2. Helping their loved ones

Imagine this: your spouse has just had a major heart operation, and after a long day at the hospital, you return to a cold, messy house. Now, instead of caring for yourself, you need to clean and cook.

Surgery isn't just stressful for the person going under the scalpel. As the risk of complications from surgery ranges from 3–22%, the patient's family and friends can experience significant stress about the procedure.

Naturally, one of the best ways to support someone through surgery is to ease the burden on their loved ones so they can prioritize the patient.

Thankfully, there are many ways to do this, including:

  • Preparing meals
  • Collecting and minding children
  • Watering plants
  • Collecting mail
  • Laundry
  • Tidying the home
  • Grocery shopping
  • Caring for pets

Bible verses before surgery

No items found.

When you are looking for a word of encouragement before surgery, the Bible is the best place to turn.

God's word is full of messages of strength and hope through adversity. In fact, the Bible mentions the word "strength" and its synonyms at least 360 times. The word "hope" also appears in many well-known passages — like Job 11:18: "And thou shalt be secure because there is hope."

Naturally, many Bible verses can comfort someone before surgery, including:

  • Romans 8:28: "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."
  • Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
  • Romans 15:13: "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost."

You may also choose to draw comfort from Bible stories about God healing the sick. For example, you might choose to reflect on Luke 8:43-48. In these verses, we learn that Jesus healed a woman with a blood problem before telling her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."

Prayers for surgery

Prayer is one of the best ways we can connect with God, as it provides us a medium to ask Him for help, support, and comfort for ourselves and others. Naturally, praying for a loved one's surgery is a great way to bring them peace of mind.

To support someone with prayer, you can pray with them directly in person, over video chat, or via phone.

Alternatively, you could offer prayers in a card or letter, or pray with the patient's loved ones. Praying in a group is an act of healing, as it gives people a medium to express their fears and seek hope from God.

To help you pray for a loved one, we'd like to share five prayers for surgery.

Short prayer before surgery

"Dear God, please look after us in our time of need. Please guide (patient) through a successful operation and a speedy recovery.

Prayer for a successful surgery

"O Lord,

We surrender ourselves to you and ask for your help.

While we cannot guide (patient) any further, you'll be going into surgery with them today.

You're our creator, and you've breathed life into us. Please grant (patient) a successful surgery so that they may make a full recovery and continue to glorify you.

Bless the hands of the surgeons, doctors, and nurses in their work today, and please help them heal (patient).

Let us remember your words in Isaiah 41:10: "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed."

In your son Lord Jesus Christ's name,

Prayer for healing and recovery after surgery

"Heavenly Father,

Please relieve (patient)'s pain and help them recover well. They are suffering greatly, and we beg you for relief. Please lay your loving hands on them, grant them mercy, and take away their pain with your healing power.

Almighty God, we cast our cares onto you as we are commanded in 1 Peter 5:7.

In the name of Jesus, please grant our healing prayer.

Prayer for comfort and strength

"Dear God,

We ask you to comfort (patient) and their family. As (patient) undergoes their procedure, their family will sit in limbo. Grant them the strength to comfort and uplift each other through these tense hours.

O God, we know you are with us always, but we ask you to stay close by our sides today.

We trust in your Lord, and we ask that you see us through.

Prayer to praise God after a successful surgery

"Holy Spirit!

Let us raise our voices and praise you boldly!

We asked that you guide (patient) through surgery, and you delivered. (patient)'s surgery was a success, and they are now on the road to recovery.

Praise you, dear Lord!

We couldn't ask for a more loving Father, and we can only say one thing: "thank you."

Bless your healing hands, Amen."

God can help you support a loved one through surgery

Every year, many people will undergo surgery. It can be stressful for everyone involved, including the medical staff, the patient, and their friends and family.

But thankfully, you can find relief from stress in prayer. Our Father God is always watching over us, and through prayer, we can ask Him for support, comfort, and guidance.
