In addition to Gabriel and Satan, the Archangel Michael is the most well-known biblical angel in the orthodox church.
It’s hard to tell whether what we know about Michael is from the Bible or legend since he’s such a legendary character.
The term Archangel has become commonplace, but what does it mean? Also, what achievements did Michael accomplish, and where does he fit into the hierarchy of God’s angels?
Today we’ll discuss the Archangel Michael and what the Bible teaches us about him.
First, let's define an Archangel. The Greek word for “archangel” is archággelos, which means “chief angel” or “chief messenger.” As we know it today, Archangel means "an angel of high rank."
There are seven angels or archangels that correspond to the days of the week. The seven guardian angels are as follows:
According to scripture, Michael is known as the "great captain" of heavenly hosts. He's also the one who helps Israel fight their enemies. He appears only a few times in the Bible, and his one known line is in Jude 1:9 when Michael rebukes Satan, who was a fallen angel, by saying, "The Lord rebuke you!”
The history of Christianity records that the Archangel Michael became known as the savior of the church's armies against the Devil's attacks. But what is the story behind the angel?
Michael the archangel, as it turns out, doesn't appear in the Bible very much. Most of the information about the angel is believed to come from extra-biblical sources and not the Bible directly.
It makes sense, considering Michael is only mentioned three times in the Hebrew Bible, in both the Old and New Testament, all in the Book of Daniel. The Archangel Michael is also known as a great warrior in Heaven and a military commander of some of the angels.
Our limited knowledge suggests that Michael was the "Angel of the Lord," who appeared to Moses, Jacob, and Abraham, as well as others throughout the Bible.
It’s unclear whether he’s the angel of 1 Thessalonians 4:16 of whom Paul writes “the Lord Himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel's call and with the sound of God's trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ, will rise first.”
There’s also a controversial theory that suggests Michael was the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus. He's given the title of “prince” and shown to be a “protector of the people, Israel” (Daniel 12:1).
This suggests that he could have been Christ before he took corporeal form, but there is no Biblical evidence of this.
Michael is Last Mentioned in Revelation 12:7 and plays a significant part in the apocalypse by striking down Lucifer once and for all, leading us to paradise.
Archangel Michael is revered as Saint Michael the Archangel patron saint and protector of God's people in the Catholic church.
In times of trouble, many Christians see the Archangel as a comfort. Any time negativity pervades our lives, the Archangel can intervene. There may be challenges you're facing, such as a relationship breakup, a recent loss of a loved one, or a difficult decision you need guidance on.
You can call on the healing powers of all Angels to guide you and reassure you during any difficult time you may face in life, Michael included.
There are a few prayers that you can use if you need some extra strength from the archangel. Here are three that you can use at any time.
“St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him; we humbly pray, and do thou, the great Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”
“Oh most Noble Prince of the Angelic Hierarchies valorous warrior of Almighty God, and zealous lover of His glory, the terror of the rebellious angels, and love and delight of all the just ones, my beloved Archangel Saint Michael, desiring to be numbered among thy devoted servants, I, today offer and consecrate myself to thee, and place myself, my family, and all I possess under thy most powerful protection. I entreat thee not to look at how little, I, as thy servant have to offer, being only a wretched sinner, but to gaze, rather, with a favorable eye at the heartfelt affection with which this offering is made, and remember that if from this day onward I am under thy patronage, thou must during all my life assist me, and procure for me the pardon of my many grievous offenses, and sins, the grace to love with all my heart, my God, my dear Savior Jesus Christ, and my Sweet Mother Mary, and obtain for me all the help necessary to arrive at my crown of glory. Defend me always from my spiritual enemies, particularly in the last moments of my life. Come then oh Glorious Prince and succor me in my last struggle, and with thy powerful weapon cast far from me into the infernal abysses that prevaricator and the proud angel that one day thou prostrated in the celestial battle. Saint Michael defend us in our daily battle so that we may not perish in the Last Judgment.”
“Archangel Michael, Lover, and Protector of all people take away my fears, worries, and concerns. Help me to remember that you are watching over me at all times. Let me remember that no matter what is happening in my life, you are at my side. When you're there, you comfort and guide me. You even hold my hand as we walk through dark nights of the soul. You bring me peace and poise as we stand side by side. Take away my fears this instant. Let me feel your presence and grace. All the peace that you are sending, I gratefully receive. Amen.”
