# Bible in a Year, Day 9: The God Who Sees You in the Wilderness

When Sarai ran ahead of God's promise, Hagar paid for it in the desert. Genesis 16 shows the God who goes after the people caught in the mess.

## Today's reading

Today's reading is Genesis 16, where Sarai's long wait turns into a plan and Hagar ends up alone in the desert. Her words at the spring are the ones to hold onto.

> She called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”

## Reflection

God had promised Abram and Sarai descendants, but years passed and nothing happened. Pastor Jack Graham says Sarai got tired of waiting, so she came up with a plan: give her servant Hagar to Abram and maybe God would give them a child through her. It seemed reasonable and it was culturally acceptable, but it was not God's plan.

The moment Hagar conceived, everything fell apart. Resentment, jealousy and pain filled a household that was supposed to carry a blessing. Hagar looked at Sarai with contempt, Sarai treated Hagar harshly, and Hagar ran away, pregnant and alone. As Pastor Graham put it, "anytime we try to force God's hands or manipulate his will, we end up making a mess."

Yet the story does not end in the desert. The angel of the Lord found Hagar by a spring and asked her, "Where have you come from, and where are you going?" Pastor Graham points out what came next: "He called her by name, Hagar. He saw her." Then he gave her a promise and told her to go back, because God would bless her and her son.

Hagar answered by naming God El Roi, the God who sees me. Pastor Graham notes that she had no power, no voice and no status, and she is the first person in the Bible to give God a name. The one nobody was looking for was the one God saw.

He draws the line to Jesus, who came for the outcast and the forgotten: the Samaritan woman at the well, the woman caught in adultery, the tax collectors and sinners. If you feel unknown or invisible today, hear his words: "Jesus sees you, and when he sees you, he loves you."

The chapter also holds a warning. Pastor Graham says "God's plan can't be rushed." It also shows that when we get ahead of God and make a mess, he stays with us, pursues us and provides for us.

## Take it with you

- Where are you tempted to help God out because the waiting feels too long?
- If you feel overlooked, remember that God called Hagar by name in the wilderness. He knows yours.
- Who around you might feel unseen, and how could you show them they matter?

## Prayer

Lord, you see me right where I am. Forgive me for the times I have run ahead of you because waiting felt hard. Thank you for staying with me when I make a mess and for coming after me instead of walking away. Help me trust your timing and rest in your promise. Open my eyes to the people who feel forgotten, and let me show them the kindness you have shown me. Amen.
